Advanced persistent threats (APTs) have novel features such as multi-stage penetration, highly-tailored intention, and evasive tactics. APTs defense requires fusing multi-dimensional Cyber threat intelligence data to identify attack intentions and conducts efficient knowledge discovery strategies by data-driven machine learning to recognize entity relationships. However, data-driven machine learning lacks generalization ability on fresh or unknown samples, reducing the accuracy and practicality of the defense model. Besides, the private deployment of these APT defense models on heterogeneous environments and various network devices requires significant investment in context awareness (such as known attack entities, continuous network states, and current security strategies). In this paper, we propose a few-shot multi-domain knowledge rearming (FMKR) scheme for context-aware defense against APTs. By completing multiple small tasks that are generated from different network domains with meta-learning, the FMKR firstly trains a model with good discrimination and generalization ability for fresh and unknown APT attacks. In each FMKR task, both threat intelligence and local entities are fused into the support/query sets in meta-learning to identify possible attack stages. Secondly, to rearm current security strategies, an finetuning-based deployment mechanism is proposed to transfer learned knowledge into the student model, while minimizing the defense cost. Compared to multiple model replacement strategies, the FMKR provides a faster response to attack behaviors while consuming less scheduling cost. Based on the feedback from multiple real users of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) over 2 months, we demonstrate that the proposed scheme can improve the defense satisfaction rate. © 2023 IEEE.

Using WiFi Fingerprinting for indoor positioning is becoming increasingly popular due to its cost-effectiveness. However, to ensure the system can operate with high accuracy and stability, this technique requires a burden of data collection tasks from a dense distribution of reference points (RPs). To decrease the cost of data collection, as well as to improve the WiFi fingerprint database with irregular distribution of RPs, this study applies and compares different interpolation methods. Evaluating these methods in a public dataset including multiple sub-datasets with irregular distributions of RPs, the results highlight the Linear Barycentric interpolation (LB) as the most favorable method due to its low complexity and stable performance. The LB-based fingerprint database achieves an average interpolation error of less than 3 dBm compared to the original one. When applying the interpolated database to positioning tasks, it can help reduce acquisition costs by up to 50% while improving positioning accuracy by up to 11%. The study reveals the feasibility of interpolation in optimizing WiFi fingerprint data collection, especially in large and complex environments where regular distribution of RPs cannot be deployed. © 2024 IEEE.

Brain tumor segmentation and classification play a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment planning of brain tumors. Accurate and efficient methods for identifying tumor regions and classifying different tumor types are essential for guiding medical interventions. This study comprehensively reviews brain tumor segmentation and classification techniques, exploring various approaches based on image processing, machine learning, and deep learning. Furthermore, our study aims to review existing methodologies, discuss their advantages and limitations, and highlight recent advancements in this field. The impact of existing segmentation and classification techniques for automated brain tumor detection is also critically examined using various open-source datasets of Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) of different modalities. Moreover, our proposed study highlights the challenges related to segmentation and classification techniques and datasets having various MRI modalities to enable researchers to develop innovative and robust solutions for automated brain tumor detection. The results of this study contribute to the development of automated and robust solutions for analyzing brain tumors, ultimately aiding medical professionals in making informed decisions and providing better patient care. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

The use of telepresence robots in educational settings offers a promising solution for students who are unable to attend classes in person due to illness, disability, or other barriers. However, the extent to which these technologies facilitate the perceived inclusion of remote students remains underexplored. This study investigates the experiences of remote students using telepresence robots to attend university classes, focusing on factors that mediate their sense of inclusion. Through an inductive analysis of interviews and observations from 22 remote students, we identify technological and socio-pedagogical factors that influence inclusion. Our findings reveal that while telepresence robots enhance physical presence and agency compared to traditional video conferencing tools, challenges such as technological limitations, social norms, and pedagogical practices can hinder full integration. We offer recommendations for educators and institutions to better support remote students and suggest design improvements for telepresence technologies to foster inclusivity in classroom settings. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Intrusion Detection System (IDS) must be developed based on latest live traffic dataset. This will facilitate the study on new attributes of current threat. Once again, researchers are locked on the same vicious circle of inability to access live traffic dataset. This is coupled with public domain logged dataset may not be useful for a new threat research. Due to these standing hurdles, Pseudo Random Binary Sequence (PRBS) is used to generate synthetic dataset in IDS studies. One of its components is the Digital to Analog (D/A) converter. There are two types of D/A implementations;1) through Weighted and 2) R2R resistors. This paper compares the advantages and the disadvantages of designing D/A converter by using the abovementioned resistors. It is advisable to opt for R2R version over Weighted Resistor since it is easier and practical to choose the multiple types of resistors during circuit design process. Furthermore, the shifted parallel output from the circuit can be synchronized by the proposed PLL circuit. © 2023 IEEE.

The throughput maximization in multi-hop wireless networks is largely limited by interference due to the reuse of the channel resources. Although machine learning (ML) can accelerate the optimization of wireless network capacity, the existing system can become limited because of insufficient knowledge from available data. We propose a self-renewal ML (SRML) method that incrementally improves the throughput maximization of future optimization instances through the design of a data selection algorithm for scheduling structure classification and application identification model retraining. With one round of implementation, the SRML method outperforms the fixed ML (FML) method, random (RAND) method and Greedy Heuristic method in the multi-commodity flow deployment setting with an average achievable throughput of 100% for small flows and at least 79% for large flows, relative to the delayed column generation (DCG) benchmark algorithm, while reducing the computational complexity and achieving a high solution efficiency. By leveraging the transfer learning of parameters during self-renewal, the computational cost of model training is reduced by at least 71.09%. © 2023 IEEE.

With the development of space-air-ground integrated network (SAGIN), the Low Earth Orbit Satellite Communication (LEO SatCom) network has great potential to provide high rate communication services for aeronautical traffic. To overcome the frequency handovers between aircraft and LEO satellites, we generated a global aeronautical traffic demand map and utilized the graph-based handover (GBH) framework and the multi-attribute decision making (MADM) algorithm jointly to optimize the overall throughput. Moreover, we further propose a new parameter, called channel reservation order (CRO), for MADM algorithm. Simulation results indicate our strategy improves the performance in terms of overall throughput and access failure probability. © 2019 IEEE.

Carbon produced from kenaf residue (KC) was utilized as a conductive additive for electrodes in electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs). The EDLC cells were assembled using electrodes with varying mixing ratios of KC and carbon black (CB), and their electrochemical properties were evaluated. The resistance of the EDLC cell, assembled with electrodes incorporating KC and CB as conductive additives, decreased rapidly. This indicated that the conductive additive enhanced the electron conductive path in the electrodes. The energy density of the EDLC cell, which utilized electrodes composed of KC and CB, was found to be approximately equivalent to that of electrodes composed solely of CB, particularly at power densities below 100 W kg−1. Through the application of carbon derived from kenaf residue to an EDLC electrode, we discovered new potential uses for kenaf residue. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The radio frequency spectrum is a very valuable resource. Analogue television broadcasting uses the spectrum inefficiently and television (TV) broadcasting brings less income than mobile services. With these, the world is moving to digital terrestrial television broadcasting and giving some of the TV broadcasting spectrum to International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) services. This migration process includes turning off analogue broadcasting to clear the spectrum for digital broadcasting, and requires that the affected population has digital TV receivers. For these and other reasons, many developing countries are still considering the move. This paper looks at a methodology to estimate the number of people who are affected by switching off any particular TV broadcasting station, using an example from South Africa. © 2022 IEEE.
