In an era where technology is evolving rapidly, there is a need to efficiently secure access control systems within educational institutions and office environments. Access control systems are crucial in ensuring the security and legal access to physical and digital resources. In this research, a system was designed and implemented to monitor the lecture hall and office environment within the School of engineering Sciences, University of Ghana. The system integrated multiple layers of access controls, including biometric fingerprint recognition, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) card authentication, and personal identification number (PIN). A database was generated to identify people who use the facilities. This provided a robust and user-friendly hybrid system. The system leverages modern database technologies to record and manage access, enabling real-time monitoring of lecture halls and office spaces. Moreover, it offers a user-friendly interface for administrators, lecturers, lab attendants, and other users. The database generated could also be used to check class attendance. The results demonstrate significant improvements in security, attendance tracking, and overall access management efficiency in the School of engineering Sciences. © 2024 IEEE.

String search algorithms play an important role in many research areas such as data mining and bioinformatics. While there exist a number of algorithms that handles the topic, we are exploring the the Knuth-Morris-Pratt (KMP) and Boyer-Moore algorithms due to their efficiency and versatility. In this work, we compared the algorithms in terms of characteristics, performance and implementation details. We also tested both the algorithms with various patterns and texts that differs in size. We also analyzed the performance of the algorithms on 4 different processors to understand the technological advancements effects on their performance. Our findings suggest that the BM algorithm perform better with large texts and patterns, while the KMP algorithm is better suited for smaller ones. Also, while newer processor generally exhibit improved performance, the significance of these enhancements may vary. Thus, we should rather be looking specific architectural advancements within generations rather than focusing solely on the generational gap. © 2025 IEEE.

Agricultural cultivation is an essential requirement for the survival and well-being of the human species. Lack of care or incorrect assessment of various growth and productivity-related metrics leads to a significant loss of production. The wireless crop monitoring system needs a portable, user-friendly, accurate, and automatic data generator for various critical metrics. This paper presents the temperature, humidity, soil moisture, and air quality monitoring of soil conditions and atmosphere for efficient crop growth. The parameters listed above will be monitored using Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). This research resolves the issue of excessive water supply by assessing soil moisture. Monitoring temperature allows for the estimation of a plant's water requirements. Monitoring air quality allows for the maintenance of healthy air quality. © 2024 IEEE.

The Network Data Analytics Function (NWDAF) within the 5G core is not an inherent feature of open-source 5G cores, making its implementation necessary based on provider demands. However, for those seeking to integrate NWDAF into the core but lacking expertise in core architecture or application programming interface (API) integration, this task can be daunting, potentially resulting in the abandonment of data analytics implementation efforts. While the current version of NWDAF specifies certain use cases, it does not provide alternatives for developing new analytics scenarios. To fill this gap, this paper proposes a framework for 5G network data analytics designed to facilitate algorithmic modifications and the addition of new analytical contexts. The framework was developed considering the 3GPP technical specifications related to data analytics. Its evaluation was performed through a use case focused on cybersecurity anomaly detection applied to a 5G network core. The results demonstrated that the framework simplifies installation, increases flexibility for new algorithms, and integrates seamlessly into the 5G network core, effectively addressing previously identified shortcomings. © 2024 IEEE.

The integration of edge controllers into smart grid infrastructures facilitates advanced functionalities and high responsiveness, thereby bolstering the overall efficiency of the energy grid. The freshness of the sensing information received at the edge controller, captured by the Age of Information (AoI) metric, is vital to maintain system stability, where outdated information may lead to incorrect responses to grid conditions, potentially causing inefficiencies or system disruptions. However, the timeliness of the transmitted updates is mainly compromised by the delay and congestion within the routing links in the Neighborhood Area Network (NAN). In this work, we develop an intelligent routing strategy to improve the AoI of the Routing Protocol for Low-power and lossy networks (RPL), which is the common routing protocol for smart grids. Our proposed method is based on an AoI-aware parent selection mechanism, by which a node becomes attached to the parent with the highest probability of delivering a packet within a predefined AoI threshold. The prediction is made based on a supervised machine learning model, trained using the collection of heterogeneous routing metrics. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated via extensive discrete-event simulations and the results show its potency to improve the peak AoI and the AoI violation probability compared to the standard RPL. © 2024 IEEE.

Recommender systems aim to filter information effectively and recommend useful sources to match users' requirements. However, the exponential growth of information in recent social networks may cause low prediction accuracy for recommendation systems. This article proposes a unified personalized recommendation architecture referred to as PSRec, which incorporates user preference and social relationship into matrix factorization framework. Specifically, PSRec generates two collections for textual reviews and contextual information respectively, and performs preference learning for each user via the Latent Dirichlet Allocation topic model. Moreover, PSRec exploits the inner relations within the social circle for recommendation, including direct trust relationship and indirect trust relationship. Additionally, it's certificated that PSRec can converge at a sub-linear rate via theoretical analysis. Experimental results over DoubanMovie, CiaoDVDs and Yelp demonstrate the superiority of the proposed PSRec, which can achieve significant improvements and provide much better user experience while compared with other benchmark models. © 2024 - IOS Press. Transfer-learning has rapidly become one of the most sophisticated and effective techniques in dealing with medical datasets. The most common transfer-learning method uses of a state-of-the-art model and its corresponding parameters as the starting point for new tasks. Recent studies have found that transfer-learning between medical and natural images has minimal advantages, attributed to their different characteristics, even with sufficient data and iterations. This study employs a meta-learning technique, building upon the traditional transfer learning approach, to explore the potential of natural tasks as a starting point for analyzing medical images. In addition, this study investigates the performance of transferring the searched augmentation from natural to medical images. Several studies proposing search algorithms for data augmentation argue that the augmentation techniques can be effectively transferred across different datasets. The results revealed that the transferability between natural and medical images leads to reduced performance owing to the characteristic difference between medical and natural searched augmentation. © 2013 IEEE.

The energy consumption of telecommunication networks has been rising steadily due to the expansion of networks, power-hungry equipment and ever-increasing consumer demand. This contributes significantly to the world's carbon footprint and greenhouse emissions. In particular, radio access networks (RANs) have been identified to have a larger contribution to the energy consumption of telecommunication networks, and a thorough evaluation is required to understand the avenues for energy reduction. In light of that, this study discusses various strategies to lower RAN power usage to minimize telecommunication's environmental effect. Furthermore, a two-pronged strategy that combines dynamic operation management of base stations (BSs) and renewable energy integration is introduced to reduce the environmental impacts of RANs. With this hybrid strategy energy consumption and carbon footprint may be significantly reduced by using solar and wind energy to power BSs and putting clever dynamic energy management strategies like adaptive sleep modes and real-time power adjustment into practice. The proposed approach guarantees the continuous expansion of telecommunications networks while also being in line with international climate targets. The results highlight how important sustainable practices are to the telecommunication industry and offer a path forward for reducing its environmental effect without compromising dependable and strong connectivity. © 2025 IEEE.

Resource Allocation and Power Control for D2D Communications With Spread Unsent-Data Strategy

Direct-to-direct (D2D) communication is a promising technology to increase network capacity, and user equipments (UEs) in a D2D group can communicate with each other without the help of a base station (BS). According to 3GPP specifications, a D2D transmitter will be assigned to radio resource blocks (RBs) based on the amount of its unsent data observed at the scheduling time instant. Most previous methods assign fewer (or say just enough) RBs to consume unsent data of the D2D transmitter. By this policy, each of the assigned RBs has to carry more data bits, and the D2D transmitter needs to enlarge its transmit power on the assigned RBs. As a result, the D2D transmitter will induce more interference to its nearby groups and may cause those nearby groups to be unschedulable. To tackle the above problem, we propose a spread unsent-data strategy, which distributes the observed unsent data to more usable RBs. Since each RB carries fewer data bits, the D2D transmitter can reduce its transmit power. Therefore, this strategy can offer the benefits of reducing interference and increasing concurrent D2D transmissions. In this work, we design a two-phase scheduling method, named DS^2, to accomplish the strategy. In DS^2, the preparing phase first identifies usable RBs for D2D groups, and then the power level decision phase carefully adjusts D2D transmitters' transmit power levels by considering interference relationships between the BS, cellular UEs, and D2D groups. The simulation results indicate that the proposed DS^2 can indeed increase D2D throughput. © 1967-2012 IEEE.
