Combined deep convolutional neural networks for abnormality classification in wireless capsule endoscopy images

A digestive disease is a condition that affects the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, ranging from mild to severe. Common issues include heartburn, cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, and lactose intolerance. Additionally, other intestinal concerns such as bleeding, polyps, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcers, diverticulitis, small bowel syndrome, and intestinal ischemia represent further digestive illnesses. Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) is a device designed for endoscopic exploration that employs a compact camera to capture images of the GI tract as it passes through. WCE significantly aids in the identification of GI tract disorders. However, due to the capsule’s rapid transit and the potential for blurry, ambiguous images, abnormalities in certain regions of the intestine may be overlooked. Moreover, frames can become hazy if obstructed by food or stool waste. In this research, we propose a method for detecting abnormalities in WCE images to address these limitations. To achieve high classification performance through the extraction of both high-level and low-level features, we employ a deep CNN that integrates the DenseNet121 model with a residual block. Experimental studies demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art techniques on two publicly available WCE datasets, one focused on bleeding and the other on various abnormalities. The accuracy of the proposed architecture is 96.96% for the Kvasir-Capsule Dataset and 99.50% for the MICCAI 2017 dataset. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

R2A-UNET: double attention mechanisms with residual blocks for enhanced MRI image segmentation

Gliomas, a highly aggressive and malignant category of brain tumors, continue to pose a significant global health challenge. Originating from the abnormal and uncontrolled growth of glial cells within the brain, these tumors often result in severe neurological impairments and high mortality rates, underscoring the urgency for improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Early diagnosis can significantly improve outcomes and survival. Consequently, precise segmentation of tumor tissue in medical images is critical for accurate brain tumor diagnosis and effective treatment. However, achieving high-precision segmentation remains challenging due to the complex and variable nature of tumor structures in medical images. To address this problem, we developed R2A-UNET, a U-shaped architecture that leverages the power of residual blocks and attention mechanisms. To enhance the model’s ability to capture critical and relevant information, we incorporated two advanced attention mechanisms. These mechanisms are designed to prioritize important features while suppressing irrelevant or redundant details, thereby significantly improving the efficiency and accuracy of feature extraction across varying datasets. Normalized Channel Attention (NCA) was integrated in each encoder stage, generating a squeezed vector with relevant features at the end of the contracting path. Normalized Spatial Attention (NSA) was included in the skip connection in the middle of the encoder and decoder, generating more concentrated feature maps before concatenation on the decoder side. These mechanisms enable the model to focus on specific pixel values that more accurately localize abnormalities. In our study, we evaluated the performance of our model using two MRI image datasets: the LGG (Lower-Grade Glioma) segmentation database and the BraTS 2018 dataset. Considering the fact of increasing population and as a result, the number of patients is constantly increasing the delivery of medical services must be prompt and of good quality. There is no question that any perfect healthcare system should track the given activities, behaviours, schedules, and even general health of the patients. The focus of this study is in utilizing ML and DL in tracing patients and diagnosing ailments. Mounted cameras from different orientations and placements are intended for health monitoring and event surveillance for possible medical issues in the future. Classical ML and more advanced DL methods are applied for analyzing physiological and behavioral patterns to identify health conditions and stress the importance of high accuracy and real-time performance for practical purposes. Initial outcomes show that patient outcomes are enhanced by getting timely medical advice while decreasing hospital-based burdens on staff. Two challenging datasets, ETRI-Activity3D and NTU-RGB-D, are pre-processed to remove unimportant data and reduce computational load. A strong multi-feature description system can extract gradient values, and the process is followed by feature matching and feature optimization. Then, in the last Maximum Entropy Markov Model (MEMM) classifier is used, achieving an accuracy of 97.2% for ETRI-Activity3D, and 98.3% for the NTU-RGB-D dataset. ©2025 The authors.

Addressing Imbalance in Health Datasets: A New Method NR-Clustering SMOTE and Distance Metric Modification

An imbalanced dataset often challenges machine learning, particularly classification methods. Underrepresented minority classes can result in biased and inaccurate models. The Synthetic Minority Over-Sampling Technique (SMOTE) was developed to address the problem of imbalanced data. Over time, several weaknesses of the SMOTE method have been identified in generating synthetic minority class data, such as overlapping, noise, and small disjuncts. However, these studies generally focus on only one of SMOTE’s weaknesses: noise or overlapping. Therefore, this study addresses both issues simultaneously by tackling noise and overlapping in SMOTE-generated data. This study proposes a combined approach of filtering, clustering, and distance modification to reduce noise and overlapping produced by SMOTE. Filtering removes minority class data (noise) located in majority class regions, with the k-nn method applied for filtering. The use of Noise Reduction (NR), which removes data that is considered noise before applying SMOTE, has a positive impact in overcoming data imbalance. Clustering establishes decision boundaries by partitioning data into clusters, allowing SMOTE with modified distance metrics to generate minority class data within each cluster. This SMOTE clustering and distance modification approach aims to minimize overlap in synthetic minority data that could introduce noise. The proposed method is called “NR-Clustering SMOTE,” which has several stages in balancing data: (1) filtering by removing minority classes close to majority classes (data noise) using the k-nn method;(2) clustering data using K-means aims to establish decision boundaries by partitioning data into several clusters;(3) applying SMOTE oversampling with Manhattan distance within each cluster. A fusion of machine learning and cryptography for fast data encryption through the encoding of high and moderate plaintext information blocks

Within the domain of image encryption, an intrinsic trade-off emerges between computational complexity and the integrity of data transmission security. Protecting digital images often requires extensive mathematical operations for robust security. However, this computational burden makes real-time applications unfeasible. The proposed research addresses this challenge by leveraging machine learning algorithms to optimize efficiency while maintaining high security. This methodology involves categorizing image pixel blocks into three classes: high-information, moderate-information, and low-information blocks using a support vector machine (SVM). Encryption is selectively applied to high and moderate information blocks, leaving low-information blocks untouched, significantly reducing computational time. To evaluate the proposed methodology, parameters like precision, recall, and F1-score are used for the machine learning component, and security is assessed using metrics like correlation, peak signal-to-noise ratio, mean square error, entropy, energy, and contrast. The results are exceptional, with accuracy, entropy, correlation, and energy values all at 97.4%, 7.9991, 0.0001, and 0.0153, respectively. Furthermore, this encryption scheme is highly efficient, completed in less than one second, as validated by a MATLAB tool. These findings emphasize the potential for efficient and secure image encryption, crucial for secure data transmission in rea-time applications. © The Author(s) 2024.

The high mobility of uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) has led to their usage in various computer vision applications, notably in intelligent traffic surveillance, where it enhances productivity and simplifies the process. Yet, there are still several challenges that must be resolved to automate these systems. One significant challenge is the accurate extraction of vehicle foregrounds in complex traffic scenarios. As a result, this article proposes a novel vehicle detection and tracking system for autonomous vehicle surveillance, which employs Fuzzy C-mean clustering to segment the aerial images. After segmentation, we employed the YOLOv4 deep learning algorithm, which is efficient in detecting small-sized objects in vehicle detection. Furthermore, an ID assignment and recovery algorithm based on Speed-Up Robust Feature (SURF) is used for multi-vehicle tracking across image frames. Vehicles are determined by counting in each image to estimate the traffic density at different time intervals. Finally, these vehicles were tracked using DeepSORT, which combines the Kalman filter with deep learning to produce accurate results. Furthermore, to understand the traffic flow direction, the path trajectories of each tracked vehicle is projected. Our proposed model demonstrates a noteworthy vehicle detection and tracking rate during experimental validation, attaining precision scores of 0.82 and 0.80 over UAVDT and KIT-AIS datasets for vehicle detection. A safe and adequate blood supply is essential for healthcare systems to function effectively. Accurately forecasting blood demand plays a key role in efficient inventory management and resource allocation. Traditional forecasting methods, like moving averages and ARIMA models, often fall short due to the complexity of factors influencing blood demand. This study introduces an innovative hybrid ensemble model that combines Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks with XGBoost, harnessing their combined strengths to enhance forecasting accuracy. By analyzing blood donation data from the Zakho Blood Bank (January 1, 2015—July 22, 2022), the model outperforms individual LSTM and XGBoost models, excelling in metrics such as Mean Square Error (MSE) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE).
