HELP4DNS: Leveraging the programmable data plane for effective and robust defense against DDoS attacks on DNS

DNS is a critical component of the Internet infrastructure, and securing it has been an active research domain, with a particular emphasis on countering DDoS attacks. With the rise of programmable data planes, novel defensive strategies taking advantage of their flexibility and line-rate packet processing capabilities have been developed to counter a range of DDoS attacks. This study proposes two novel methodologies against DNS flood and DNS amplification attacks within programmable data planes using P4. The first approach involves constraining the concurrent active queries per client to mitigate DNS query flood attacks, thereby ensuring that clients generating a high volume of requests adhere to predetermined limits. The proposed method uses concurrent query limits per client by employing a modified token bucket algorithm within an updatable Bloom filter data structure to track and limit DNS queries. This approach effectively rate limits malicious client requests, preventing server overload and safeguarding benign users from any resulting disruptions. The second method is a DNS firewall implemented on the P4 switch situated on the victim's side to prevent DNS amplification attacks. The proposed firewall utilizes an updatable Bloom filter on a P4 switch, enabling stateful processing of DNS queries at the application layer. Additionally, it supports stateful tracking of fragmented DNS responses resulting from the Extension Mechanisms for DNS. While IP fragmentation occurs at the IP layer, the proposed approach achieves stateful tracking of fragmented DNS responses at the application layer. In this manner, only the responses corresponding to legitimate requests are forwarded among the received DNS responses by the victim, while responses stemming from DNS amplification attacks are blocked. Evaluation results have demonstrated that the proposed approach effectively blocks high-volume DNS amplification attack packets with minimal memory space requirements. © 2025 Elsevi

The primary objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that the binary information on the presence or absence of gene expression can sufficiently capture the inherent heterogeneity within single-cell RNA se quencing (scRNA-seq) data. This hypothesis posits that even without detailed expression levels, valuable insights about cellular diversity can be obtained. Utilizing this method can be particularly advantageous when analyzing large datasets, a common scenario in the field of scRNA-seq. In this paper, we evaluate clustering performance and cluster separability of a variety of model-based algorithms and distance-based methods to an alyze both expression level data and threshold-encoded binarized data. We examined the performance of the Bernoulli-mixture model and Gaussian-mixture model. These were compared against traditional clustering techniques such as hierarchical clustering, K-means, and the Louvain algorithm on a range of scRNA-seq datasets. Our findings reveal that mixture models exhibit a lower dependence on the specific dataset compared to distance-based methods. Mixture models, particularly, demonstrate greater efficacy in accurately estimat ing the number of clusters present within the data. Among analyzed algorithms, the Bernoulli-mixture model stands out, outperforming distance-based approaches in several key aspects. Binary data, presence/absence of gene expression, seem to be indeed adequate to capture the heterogeneity of scRNA-seq data when clus tering with methods specifically designed for binary datasets. The implications of this finding are significant, as it opens up new possibilities for simplifying data analysis in scRNA-seq studies without compromising the accuracy of the results. © 2025 by SCITEPRESS– Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

This article presents an onboard perception-assisted high-fidelity simulation framework for autonomous planetary soft-landing, enabling visual information processing tightly integrated with advanced onboard guidance system in a realistic simulation environments. Utilizing the open source Unity game engine, a physics-based simulation toolbox integrated with the Robotic Operating System (ROS2), we effectively emulate the motion of spacecraft approaching planetary terrain. The simulation environment features a realistic 3D terrain model and a lander spacecraft equipped with onboard camera to effectively capture detailed local terrain images. The simulation engine accurately captures the spacecraft’s 6-degrees of freedom motion, seamlessly integrating space craft orientation with the associated camera feed while incorporating various illumination conditions using a light source representing the Sun. To demonstrate the efficacy of the framework, we implement a recently developed attitude-constrained minimum jerk guidance algorithm to emulate spacecraft motion. Concurrently, the visual feed from the onboard RGB camera is processed through a gradient extraction-based perception system, providing the visual odometer. This system identifies provably safe landing sites, effectively avoiding potential risks of landing on uneven terrain. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. This study explores robotic telepresence in classrooms, from the perspectives of both the remote students (operators) and their in-person classmates. Analyzing a subset of field study data from 35 participants (22 operators, 13 classmates), we identified differing priorities: operators of the robot emphasize the need for improved functional aspects like camera control, while co-present classmates value social presence, interaction and identification, advocating for features like personalization and effective communication channels. These insights underline the need for telepresence robots that balance functional efficacy with social integration to provide a holistic educational experience. This work, though incomplete, enriches Group and CSCW literature on telepresence robots to facilitate collaborative interactions by highlighting the distinct needs of remote and in-person students, proposing design recommendations for telepresence robots that are technically proficient and socially responsive. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

This study investigates children’s trust in two humanoid robots, Nao and iCub, through a cooperative game designed to elicit spontaneous behaviors and group dynamics. We investigate whether participants change their choices after hearing advice from a robot, considering rounds where the advice is correct or incorrect, with the robot apologizing for its mistakes. Results reveal that, in most cases, participants prefer not to change their moves after the robot’s advice. Additionally, after the robots made mistakes, participants are less likely to actively follow their advice and more likely to reject it. No significant differences in strategies among the iCub and Nao samples are evidenced. Furthermore, we examine the influence of group dynamics, identifying "Proactive Players" who consistently initiated moves. A significant association between the strategies of this player and their teammates is found, suggesting potential influence. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

In recent years, data generated from diverse sources has grown exponentially, giving rise to new challenges for processing and analysis under the umbrella of “big data". Although various methods and platforms have been proposed to tackle these issues, there is still a need for a conceptual guide that synthesizes state-of-the-art tools and techniques across the full machine learning (ML) workflow. In this survey, we consolidate research on big data infrastructures, distributed processing frameworks, and ML methods, mapping out an end-to-end conceptual framework that can serve as a reference architecture for end-to-end deployment. Specifically, we discuss key aspects of big data analytics (storage solutions, platforms like Hadoop and Spark, NoSQL databases), preprocessing approaches (dimensionality reduction, instance selection, noise handling), ML algorithms (supervised, unsupervised, and emerging deep learning paradigms), and deployment considerations (monitoring, continuous integration, and versioning). By gathering and integrating these elements, our survey provides a comprehensive overview of existing solutions, clarifies the design choices developers must consider, and identifies research gaps that remain to be addressed.

Knowledge Graph-based Retrieval-Augmented Generation for Schema Matching

Traditional similarity-based schema matching methods are incapable of resolving semantic ambiguities and conflicts in domain-specific complex mapping scenarios due to missing commonsense and domain-specific knowledge. The hallucination problem of large language models (LLMs) also makes it challenging for LLM-based schema matching to address the above issues. Therefore, we propose a Knowledge Graph-based Retrieval-Augmented Generation model for Schema Matching, referred to as the KG-RAG4SM. In particular, KG-RAG4SM introduces novel vector-based, graph traversal-based, and query-based graph retrievals, as well as a hybrid approach and ranking schemes that identify the most relevant subgraphs from external large knowledge graphs (KGs). We showcase that KG-based retrieval-augmented LLMs are capable of generating more accurate results for complex matching cases without any re-training. Our experimental results show that KG-RAG4SM outperforms the LLM-based state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods (e.g., Jellyfish-8B) by 35.89% and 30.50% in terms of precision and F1 score on the MIMIC dataset, respectively;KG-RAG4SM with GPT-4o-mini outperforms the pre-trained language model (PLM)-based SOTA methods (e.g., SMAT) by 69.20% and 21.97% in terms of precision and F1 score on the Synthea dataset, respectively. The results also demonstrate that our approach is more efficient in end-to-end schema matching, and scales to retrieve from large KGs. Our case studies on the dataset from the real-world schema matching scenario exhibit that the hallucination problem of LLMs for schema matching is well mitigated by our solution. An automated analysis of respiratory sounds using Deep Learning (DL) plays a pivotal role in the early detection of lung diseases. However, current DL methods often examine the spatial and temporal characteristics of respiratory sounds in isolation, which inherently limit their potential. This study proposes a novel DL framework that captures spatial features through convolution operations and exploits the spatiotemporal correlations of these features using temporal convolution networks. The proposed framework incorporates MultiLevel Temporal Convolutional Networks (ML-TCN) to considerably enhance the model accuracy in detecting anomaly breathing cycles and respiratory recordings from lung sound audio. Moreover, a transfer learning technique is also employed to extract semantic features efficiently from limited and imbalanced data in this domain. Thorough experiments on the well-known ICBHI 2017 challenge dataset show that the proposed framework outperforms state-of-the-art methods in both binary and multi-class classification tasks for respiratory anomaly and disease detection. In particular, improvements of up to 2.29% and 2.27% in terms of the Score metric, average sensitivity and specificity, are demonstrated in binary and multi-class anomaly breathing cycle detection tasks, respectively. In respiratory recording classification tasks, the classification accuracy is improved by 2.69% for healthy-unhealthy binary classification and 1.47% for healthy, chronic, and non-chronic diagnosis These results highlight the marked advantage of the ML-TCN over existing techniques, showcasing its potential to drive future innovations in respiratory healthcare technology. © 2025 IEEE.

Large Language Models (LLM) is a type of artificial neural network that excels at language-related tasks. The advantages and disadvantages of using LLM in software engineering are still being debated, but it is a tool that can be utilized in software engineering. This study aimed to analyze LLM studies in software engineering using bibliometric and content analysis. The study data were retrieved from Web of Science and Scopus. The data were analyzed using two popular bibliometric approaches: bibliometric and content analysis. VOS Viewer and Bibliometrix software were used to conduct the bibliometric analysis. The bibliometric analysis was performed using science mapping and performance analysis approaches. Various bibliometric data, including the most frequently referenced publications, journals, and nations, were evaluated and presented. Then, the synthetic knowledge method was utilized for content analysis. This study examined 235 papers, with 836 authors contributing. The publications were published in 123 different journals. The average number of citations per publication is 1.44. Most publications were published in Proceedings International Conference on Software Engineering and ACM International Conference Proceeding Series, with China and the United States emerging as the leading countries. It was discovered that international collaboration on the issue was inadequate. The most often used keywords in the publications were "software design," "code (symbols)," and "code generation." Following the content analysis, three themes emerged: 1) Integration of LLM into software engineering education, 2) application of LLM in software engineering, and 3) potential and limitation of LLM in software engineering. One of the most critical processes in the petroleum industry is transporting crude oil and its derivatives. Usually, it is done, due to easiness and economic aspects, through pipelines;several products, such as gasoline, kerosene, naphtha, and liquefied petroleum gas, among others, are moved in batch processes to both distribution and storage centers or transport ships. Since these transport systems transport different products, many works have focused on developing optimization strategies for scheduling these pipelines. That is, strategies that seek to optimize the use of the pipeline by establishing at what time points certain products must be transported. These strategies would be located at the planning level in the automation pyramid. In this work, on the other hand, different control strategies are proposed for a pipeline, but at the operation level. These strategies would be located at the control level, below the planning strategies in the automation pyramid. A pipeline of three pipe sections is modeled to develop the proposed control strategies, and the mathematical model is validated with actual data. The results show that, first, the proposed model approximates the actual behavior of the pipeline quite well and, second, that the combination of PID and feedforward control is an excellent alternative to implement control strategies for the operation of liquid transportation systems through pipelines. © Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of computer Applications and Management 2025.
