This paper shows design and comparative performance analysis for a dual band textile antenna. The resonant frequencies used were 2.4 GHz and 5.6 GHz. The performance analysis for the antennas was conducted using CST suite and HFSS simulation software. The Substrate used for the antennas design was FELT (ϵr = 1.44). The parameters used for the comparison were the S-parameters and far-field gain in addition to the Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) and radiation pattern. The results obtained for the two simulation software shows resemblance and agreement on the measured values and performance analysis. © 2016 IEEE.

With the aim of resolving the issue of cluster analysis more precisely and validly, a new approach was proposed based on biogeography-based optimization (abbreviated as BBO) algorithm. (Method) First, we reformulated the problem with an optimization model based on the variance ratio criterion (VARAC). Then, BBO was presented to search the optimal solution of the VARAC. There are 400 data of four groups in the experimental dataset, which have the degrees of overlapping of three distinct scales. The first one is nonoverlapping, the second one is partial overlapping, and the last is severely overlapping. BBO algorithm was compared with three different state-of-the-art approaches. We ran every algorithm 20 times. In this experiment, our results demonstrate the maximum VARAC values that can be found by BBO. The conclusion is that BBO is predominant which is extremely quick for the issue of clustering analysis. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2017.

We can significantly reduce the time required to realize designs if it is possible to find limits to the performance of an embedded system, solely based on high-level system specifications. For that purpose, we present in this paper the cprof profiler, which determines the number of clock cycles needed to execute a C-program in hardware. The cprof tool is based on the Clang compiler front-end to parse C-programs and to produce instrumented source code for the profiling. Using cprof, we determine a lower and upper bound limit for all 29 cases of the PolyBench/C benchmark suite. The lower and upper bound are determined using the absolute performance estimations assuming all statement are mapped onto the same processing resource and unbounded performance estimations assuming unlimited resources. We also compared the clock cycles found by cprof with RTL implementations for all 29 Polybench/C cases and found that cprof determines with 1.2% accuracy the correct number of clock cycles. It does this in a fraction of the time compared to the time needed to do a full RTL simulation. © 2016 ACM.

Chronic Kidney Disease ("CKD") and its comorbidities, diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease ("CVD"), are frequently measured by routine procedures and lab tests, creating a large amount of historical data about this patient population. In this paper, we conducted a retrospective study based on Electronic Health Records ("EHR") data, in order to identify patterns in the development of CKD. In particular, we used a clustering approach to quantifiably identify diabetic patients who are at risk of progressing to advanced stages of CKD. Using values from routine measurements and lab tests such as systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, body mass index ("BMI"), Hemoglobin A1c ("HbAlc"), triglycerides and high density lipid cholesterol ("HDL cholesterol"), patients were classified into four clusters with a distinct separation between the cluster with the best value for each lab test and a cluster with the worst value for each lab test. We used lab values from each subsequent visit to calculate a progression score using the distance to the best and worst clusters, which indicated whether a patient's health was improving or deteriorating. We believe that this approach holds promise for future tools, as it is able to provide an ordered list of patients who are at greater risk of deterioration and should benefit from intervention by healthcare providers. The conclusions made in this paper are aimed at enabling timely monitoring and earlier intervention for patients that are associated with higher possibility of CKD progression.

International challenges have become the standard for validation of biomedical image analysis methods. Given their scientific impact, it is surprising that a critical analysis of common practices related to the organization of challenges has not yet been performed. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of biomedical image analysis challenges conducted up to now. We demonstrate the importance of challenges and show that the lack of quality control has critical consequences. First, reproducibility and interpretation of the results is often hampered as only a fraction of relevant information is typically provided. Second, the rank of an algorithm is generally not robust to a number of variables such as the test data used for validation, the ranking scheme applied and the observers that make the reference annotations. To overcome these problems, we recommend best practice guidelines and define open research questions to be addressed in the future. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Extortion provides alternative routes to the evolution of cooperation in structured populations

In this paper, we study the evolution of cooperation in structured populations (individuals are located on either a regular lattice or a scale-free network) in the context of repeated games by involving three types of strategies, namely, unconditional cooperation, unconditional defection, and extortion. The strategy updating of the players is ruled by the replicator-like dynamics. We find that extortion strategies can act as catalysts to promote the emergence of cooperation in structured populations via different mechanisms. Specifically, on regular lattice, extortioners behave as both a shield, which can enwrap cooperators inside and keep them away from defectors, and a spear, which can defeat those surrounding defectors with the help of the neighboring cooperators. Particularly, the enhancement of cooperation displays a resonance-like behavior, suggesting the existence of optimal extortion strength mostly favoring the evolution of cooperation, which is in good agreement with the predictions from the generalized mean-field approximation theory. On scale-free network, the hubs, who are likely occupied by extortioners or defectors at the very beginning, are then prone to be conquered by cooperators on small-degree nodes as time elapses, thus establishing a bottom-up mechanism for the emergence and maintenance of cooperation.

Directed acyclic graphical models, or DAG models, are widely used to represent complex causal systems. Since the basic task of learning such a model from data is NP-hard, a standard approach is greedy search over the space of directed acyclic graphs or Markov equivalence classes of directed acyclic graphs. As the space of directed acyclic graphs on p nodes and the associated space of Markov equivalence classes are both much larger than the space of permutations, it is desirable to consider permutation-based greedy searches. Here, we provide the first consistency guarantees, both uniform and high-dimensional, of a greedy permutation-based search. This search corresponds to a simplex-like algorithm operating over the edge-graph of a sub-polytope of the permutohedron, called a DAG associahedron. Every vertex in this polytope is associated with a directed acyclic graph, and hence with a collection of permutations that are consistent with the directed acyclic graph ordering. A walk is performed on the edges of the polytope maximizing the sparsity of the associated directed acyclic graphs. We show via simulated and real data that this permutation search is competitive with current approaches. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The rapid development of autonomous vehicles (AVs) holds vast potential for transportation systems through improved safety, efficiency, and access to mobility. However, the progression of these impacts, as AVs are adopted, is not well understood. Numerous technical challenges arise from the goal of analyzing the partial adoption of autonomy: partial control and observation, multi-vehicle interactions, and the sheer variety of scenarios represented by real-world networks. To shed light into near-term AV impacts, this article studies the suitability of deep reinforcement learning (RL) for overcoming these challenges in a low AV-adoption regime. A modular learning framework is presented, which leverages deep RL to address complex traffic dynamics. Modules are composed to capture common traffic phenomena (stop-and-go traffic jams, lane changing, intersections). Learned control laws are found to improve upon human driving performance, in terms of system-level velocity, by up to 57% with only 4-7% adoption of AVs. Furthermore, in single-lane traffic, a small neural network control law with only local observation is found to eliminate stop-and-go traffic - surpassing all known model-based controllers to achieve near-optimal performance - and generalize to out-of-distribution traffic densities. As robotic systems are integrated into mission operations, they provide key benefits over traditional manned systems such as increased endurance, versatility, and risk reduction for personnel. In order for robotic systems to become fully integrated into United States Army missions, they will need to gain a level of autonomy that is closer to that of human personnel. Under Mission Command, the current system of issuing orders, an Operational Order (OPORD) contains the information required to execute a mission. The structure allows for authors of OPORDs to leave many details of the operation open to the discretion of the reader, making task interpretation and execution difficult for an autonomous system. The goal of this project, and one step of many in the process of automating systems to read OPORDs, is to show how OPORDs can be annotated with relevant information (such as locations, coordinates, and organizations) using the natural language processing techniques of tokenization and named-entity recognition (NER). Using A-fold cross validation of a Conditional Random Field (CRF) sequence model on 9 OPORDs containing 38,551 tokens, we were able to extract entities with an overall precision of 0.702, recall of 0.478, and F-measure of 0.569.

Active learning (AL) is a machine learning paradigm where an active learner has to train a model (e.g., a classifier) which is in principle trained in a supervised way. AL has to be done by means of a data set where a low fraction of samples (also termed data points or observations) are labeled. To obtain labels for the unlabeled samples, the active learner has to ask an oracle (e.g., a human expert) for labels. In most cases, the goal is to maximize some metric assessing the task performance (e.g., the classification accuracy) and to minimize the number of queries at the same time. In this article, we first briefly discuss the state-of-the-art in the field of AL. Then, we propose the concept of dedicated collaborative interactive learning (D-CIL) and describe some research challenges. With D-CIL, we will overcome many of the harsh limitations of current AL. In particular, we envision scenarios where the expert may be wrong for various reasons. There also might be several or even many experts with different expertise who collaborate, the experts may label not only samples but also supply knowledge at a higher level such as rules, and we consider that the labeling costs depend on many conditions. Moreover, human experts may even profit by improving their own knowledge when they get feedback from the active learner.
