Automatic classification of heartbeats in different categories is important for ECG analysis. The number of irregular heartbeats in a signal can for example be used as a risk stratifier for sudden cardiac death. Current heart-beat classification methods typically use time or frequency domain features to characterize heartbeats. We propose the use of tensors to incorporate the structural information that is present in multilead ECG channels. Since different ECG leads provide information on a particular orientation in space, more robust detection can be done if all leads are considered. After preprocessing and heartbeat detection using wavelet-based methods, the ECG signal is segmented beat-by-beat. The different heartbeats are then placed in a three-dimensional tensor with dimensions time, channels and heartbeats. Canonical Polyadic Decomposition is used to decompose the tensor. The results are three loading vectors, corresponding to the dimensions of the original tensor. Through analysis of these loading vectors, irregular heartbeats can be detected using a simple thresholding procedure. The method has been applied to a subset of the St.-Petersburg Institute of Cardiological Technics 12-lead Arrhythmia database available on Physionet. When applying the method to the first 10 signals, we obtain a mean sensitivity and specificity of more than 90%. These results indicate that the presented method is a new and reliable way of performing irregular heartbeat detection.

The 2014 edition of the Linked data Mining Challenge, conducted in conjunction with Know@LOD 2014, has been the third edition of this challenge. The underlying data came from two domains: public procurement, and researcher collaboration. Like in the previous year, when the challenge was held at the data Mining on Linked data workshop co-located with the European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of knowledge Discovery in databases (ECML PKDD 2013), the response to the challenge appeared lower than expected, with only one solution submitted for the predictive task this year. We have tried to track the reasons for the continuously low participation in the challenge via a questionnaire survey, and principles have been distilled that could help organizers of future similar challenges.

Underpinning the above vision is the ability to target service content to users’ current context, e.g., their location, intent, environment, in real time. The contribution of this work is that it uses a pervasive computing system with three key ingredients: (a) a data model, comprising user and service content entities, (b) a user context model and (c) rules for simple pattern matching on service content and user context event streams. This modus operandi is encapsulated inside a SOA architecture, the Common Airport Portal - CAP and it is illustrated through the description of a real application, Offers and Coupons Services that was deployed recently at Athens International Airport (AIA) (http://***).Airports today can constitute a perfect environment for developing novel digital marketplaces offering location-specific and semantically rich context-aware services, such as personalized marketing campaigns, last minute, discounted airline tickets while helping users access the airport and speed through the airport process. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Subject-oriented Business Process Management (S-BPM) is a novel paradigm in Business Process Management (BPM). Educating students and business stakeholders in S-BPM requires facilitating a substantial mind shift from function- towards communication-oriented (re-)construction of processes. Reformist pedagogy, as driven by Maria Montessori, allows learners grasping and applying novel concepts in self-contained settings and in an individualistic while reflected way. So why not learn from her experiences for introducing S-BPM? In this contribution her analysis of human cultural factors enabling literacy has been transcribed to S-BPM education. When informing S-BPM capacity development according to progressive education, understanding the actual situation and readiness of learners seems to play a crucial role, as it influences their engagement in learning environments. These factors need to be differentiated when conveying S-BPM concepts and activities. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

In this paper, we propose a novel method for real estate price prediction using web new media sentiments by incorporating human searching behaivor on the web. By combining online daily news' sentiments and Google search engine query data, we construct a web news content and online search behavior-based integrated model for real estate prediction. Besides these factors, real estate price time series data are also considered into the model in order to improve the forecasting performance. Furthermore, we make a comparison between the integrated model and the baseline model without search engine query data. Experimental results indicate that the integrated model outperforms the non-integrated model, which suggests that online user searching behavior is of great value in enhancing the prediction performance. These findings imply that the proposed integrated model is effective and feasible for real estate market prediction.

Subspace methods have been applied in various application fields to obtain robust results. Using multilinear algebra, they can also be applied on structured tensorial data. This work combines this principle with the power of non-linear kernels to investigate its merits in single trial classification for a mobile BCI ERP classification task. The accuracy difference with regard to more conventional vector kernels is evaluated for sitting and walking condition, increasing training data set and averaging over multiple trials. The study concludes that in general, the tensorial approach does not yield any advantage, though it might for specific subjects.

The cohesive collective motion (flocking, swarming) of autonomous agents is ubiquitously observed and exploited in both natural and man-made settings, thus, minimal models for its description are essential. In a model with continuous space and time we find that if two particles arrive symmetrically in a plane at a large angle, then (i) radial repulsion and (ii) linear self-propelling toward a fixed preferred speed are sufficient for them to depart at a smaller angle. For this local gain of momentum explicit velocity alignment is not necessary, nor are adhesion or attraction, inelasticity or anisotropy of the particles, or nonlinear drag. With many particles obeying these microscopic rules of motion we find that their spatial confinement to a square with periodic boundaries (which is an indirect form of attraction) leads to stable macroscopic ordering. As a function of the strength of added noise we see—at finite system sizes—a critical slowing down close to the order-disorder boundary and a discontinuous transition. After varying the density of particles at constant system size and varying the size of the system with constant particle density we predict that in the infinite system size (or density) limit the hysteresis loop disappears and the transition becomes continuous. We note that animals, humans, drones, etc., tend to move asynchronously and are often more responsive to motion than positions. Thus, for them velocity-based continuous models can provide higher precision than coordinate-based models. An additional characteristic and realistic feature of the model is that convergence to the ordered state is fastest at a finite density, which is in contrast to models applying (discontinuous) explicit velocity alignments and discretized time. To summarize, we find that the investigated model can provide a minimal description of flocking.
