In this paper, we propose a new variant for incremental, evolving fuzzy systems extraction from data data streams, termed as GEN-FLEXFIS (short for GENeralized FLEXible Fuzzy Inference systems). It builds upon the FLEX-FIS methodology (published by the authors before) and extends it for generalized Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy systems, which implement generalized rotated rules in arbitrary position, employing a high-dimensional kernel rather than a connection of one-dimensional components (fuzzy sets) with t-norms. The extension includes the development of the evolving clustering learning engine, termed as eVQ-A, to extract ellipsoidal clusters in arbitrary position. Furthermore, a new merging concept based on a combined adjacency-homogenuity relation between two clusters (rules) is proposed in order to prune unnecessary rules and to keep the complexity of the generalized TS fuzzy systems low. Equipped with a new projection concept for high-dimensional kernels onto one-dimensional fuzzy sets, the new approach also provides equivalent conventional TS fuzzy systems, thus maintaining interpretability when inferring new query samples. GEN-FLEXFIS will be evaluated based on high-dimensional real-world data (streaming) sets in terms of accuracy versus final model complexity, compared with conventional FLEXFIS and other well-known (evolving) fuzzy systems approaches.

In recent years there has been a marked uptake in the digitisation of cultural heritage collections. Though this has enabled more sources to be made available to experts and the wider public, curators still struggle to instigate and enhance engagement with cultural archives. This is largely due to the monolithic nature of many digital archives;the challenge of understanding large collections, especially if the language is inconsistent;and because users vary in expertise and have different tasks and goals that they are trying to accomplish. This paper describes CULTURA, an FP7 funded project that is addressing these specific issues. The various technologies and approaches being used by CULTURA are discussed, along with the lessons learnt thus far. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Web of data and web of entities: Identity and reference in interlinked data in the semantic web

Using web standards, such as uniform resource identifiers (URIs), XML and HTTP, for naming and describing resources which are not information objects is the key difference between the Web as we know it today and the Semantic Web. Naming and interlinking this type of resources by HTTP URIs (instead of individual constants in a formal language) is the key feature which distinguishes traditional knowledge representation from web-scale knowledge representation. However, this use of URIs brought back attention to the old philosophical problem of identity and reference in a new form. In this paper, we analyze the new version of the problem, provide a formal model for dealing with it when interlinking knowledge on the Web, and argue for the need of a distinction between the use of URIs for describing and accessing resources, and the use of URIs for fixing the reference. We show that in the current practice of linking data these roles are not clearly distinguished, and that this fact may cause unwanted effects and prevent some basic forms of data integration. We also discuss the role of an entity name system as a potential piece of infrastructure for fixing the reference in the Semantic Web. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Location privacy preserving is attracting more and more attentions with the wide use of accurate positioning devices. Two kinds of methods based on k-anonymity have been proposed for location privacy preserving. One is spatial cloaking and the other is dummy generation. However, simple cloaking may result in large cloaking region, especially when user distribution is sparse. Large cloaking region means low efficiency and high time cost. Dummy generation will also arouse great extra system cost. In this paper, we propose an approach that combines the two techniques to achieve an ideal complement. On one hand, cloaking algorithm is used to blur precise location into a region so that location privacy can be well protected. On the other hand, to those users whose cloaking region is large, generating limited number of dummies can help decrease the size of region. The effectiveness of our methods has been demonstrated by comprehensive experiments. © Springer-Verlag 2012.

Social Tagging systems are web applications in which users upload resources (e.g., bookmarks, videos, photos, etc.) and annotate it with a list of freely chosen keywords called tags. This is a grassroots approach to organize a site and help users to find the resources they are interested in. Social tagging systems are open and inherently social; features that have been proven to encourage participation. However, with the large popularity of these systems and the increasing amount of user-contributed content, information overload rapidly becomes an issue. Recommender systems are well known applications for increasing the level of relevant content over the “noise” that continuously grows as more and more content becomes available online. In social tagging systems, however, we face new challenges. While in classic recommender systems the mode of recommendation is basically the resource, in social tagging systems there are three possible modes of recommendation: users, resources, or tags. Therefore suitable methods that properly exploit the different dimensions of social tagging systems data are needed. In this book, we survey the most recent and state-of-the-art work about a whole new generation of recommender systems built to serve social tagging systems. The book is divided into self-contained chapters covering the background material on social tagging systems and recommender systems to the more advanced techniques like the ones based on tensor factorization and graph-based models.

Many studies show that named entities are closely related to users' search behaviors, which brings increasing interest in studying named entities in search logs recently. This paper addresses the problem of forming fine grained semantic clusters of named entities within a broad domain such as "company", and generating keywords for each cluster, which help users to interpret the embedded semantic information in the cluster. By exploring contexts, URLs and session IDs as features of named entities, a three-phase approach proposed in this paper first disambiguates named entities according to the features. Then it properly weights the features with a novel measurement, calculates the semantic similarity between named entities with the weighted feature space, and clusters named entities accordingly. After that, keywords for the clusters are generated using a text-oriented graph ranking algorithm. Each phase of the proposed approach solves problems that are not addressed in existing works, and experimental results obtained from a real click through data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Daily living skills are difficult for autistic children to learn because they have low motivation in learning new things. Some research has developed virtual environment to assist parents and teachers teaching autistic children daily living skills, educators still need to spend a lot of time in preparing personalized and more realistic tasks for children to practice. This research designs an activity generation mechanism by measuring activity's weight with fuzzy theory and rough sets help. Based on the activity generation mechanism and weight measurement, a Flash-based situated game is developed for providing autistic children personalized and non-repeated practices of activities of daily living. An evaluation plan of the pilot for verifying the effectiveness of the game and gathering the users' (include teachers, parents, and the autistic children) perceptions toward the game and the game-play is designed. © 2012 IEEE.

Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, virtual machines, applications, and services) that can be rapidly and elastically provisioned, to quickly scale out, and rapidly released to quickly scale in. However, commercially available cloud services such as public grids target the needs for the broader customer base and do not meet the specialized requirements of real-time, data-centric applications, such as sensor data aggregation, messaging, media streaming and commodity exchange, that need to process very large volumes of diverse, streaming data in near real time. To make matters worse, end-to-end communication paths between real-time data providers and consumers are no longer guaranteed, due to either node unavailability or service unavailability. The DTN paradigm has shown to promote interoperable and reliable communications in the presence of disruptions, however, is not directly applicable to cloud computing. A new cloud computing model is therefore needed for the above scenarios. This paper proposes a novel concept, that of a generalized cloud, Cirrus, defined as a computing cloud with the following characteristics: (i) abiding by the NIST Cloud Definition, (ii) providing specialized, core Cloud services targeted to real-time, data centric applications, (iii) allowing for the elastic use of Cirrus cloud resources by ad-hoc networks and (iv) allowing for the elastic incorporation of nomadic and/or severely resource constrained devices, in Cirrus. Cirrus is built on top of DTN application-layer extensions, such as the Bundle Protocol (BP). As a result, Cirrus behaves as an "overlay Cloud", elastically forming, expanding and shrinking over networks of dynamic topology that may contain both fixed and ad-hoc infrastructure, thus providing a more fair and de-centralized Cloud Computing solution that is not exclusive to "big players"
