This paper discusses the optimization of the H.264/AVC video encoder in the context of a modified software implementation on a Texas Instruments TMS320DM642 digital signal processor. Several algorithmic optimizations are proposed to improve time critical parts of the codec like the quantization step and the pixel interpolation. The algorithms proposed in this paper invoke the enhanced direct memory access (EDMA) controller, intrinsics and look-up tables to accelerate the encoding and do not affect the image peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) or compression performance. The computational acceleration gain of these algorithms are the foundation of our real time 30 CIF frames/second baseline implementation.

Hypertension,among diabetes,obesity and others,is one of the common human diseases that is genetically expressed as complex traits to which genetic,environmental,and demographic factors contribute *** the underlying genes and examining their interactions, a crucial step in understanding the molecular pathogenesis of complex diseases,is both a statistical and a computational challenge,stressing the need for novel strategies to move this process *** this paper we propose a new method to study the association of multiple gene interactions for complex *** method is carried out by two ***,we sequentially select additionally associated SNP loci combinations by minimizing the p-value of a test based on an information measure,measure of information ***,this approach is called MID ***,the significance of the selected associated loci combinations is assessed by an x *** MID method is model-free and nonparametric,it is easy to compute and *** capability of the MID method is confirmed by applying it to investigate the multiple gene interactions on risk of hypertension in northern Han Chinese,where thirty-three SNP loci with three-genotype in eleven candidate genes are *** results are consistent with those of Gu et al（2006）.Additionally,we get some other new *** indicates that our idea is indeed feasible and useful in practice.

In the last years several drafts, recommendations and concepts for a graphical notation for Topic Maps have been published, but till today no graphical notation is generally approved and used in the Topic Maps community. In this paper we present GTMalpha as a conceptual new notation for a graphical representation of Topic Maps. Our objective is, to provide a practical usable notation, which allows a complete, consistent as well as easy to use graphical representation of any given topic map draft. GTMalpha provides a domain as well as a subject centric view and most important it considers the unique characteristics of the Topic Maps paradigm. This paper serves as a user oriented GTMalpha manual for ontology designers, domain experts as well as users.

This paper proposes a collaborative experience-based travel recommendation service for Hakka culture. This service utilizes mobile devices as platform to share and purify the user's knowledge of Hakka culture. By applying TF-IDF conversion on tags that were extracted from users' experience and past knowledge, in this paper we argue that a better recommendation service can be provided compared to the traditional frequency based service. Possible AI approach for utilizing the TF-IDF data is also proposed to improve the service level by using online adaptive clustering algorithm without increasing the resource requirements.

The objective of our group was to exploit state-of-the-art information Retrieval methods for finding associations and dependencies between tags, capturing and representing differences in tagging behavior and vocabulary of various folksonomies, with the overall aim to better understand the semantics of tags and the tagging process. Therefore we analyze the semantic content of tags in the Flickr and Delicious folksonomies. We find that: tag context similarity leads to meaningful results in Flickr, despite its narrow folksonomy character;the comparison of tags across Flickr and Delicious shows little semantic overlap, being tags in Flickr associated more to visual aspects rather than technological as it seems to be in Delicious;there are regions in the tag-tag space, provided with the cosine similarity metric, that are characterized by high density;the order of tags inside a post has a semantic relevance. © 2008 Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings. Topology control is one of the most elementary topics in wireless sensor networks. Typically, most of the research only considered the bidirectional communication and symmetric weighted communication model, while the real wireless world contains not only bidirectional but also unidirectional communication links and asymmetric weighted communication model. In this paper, we present two heuristics for the minimum power topology control problem on general model, i.e., given a set of sensors in the Euclidean plane and a transmission power threshold for each directed pair of sensors, to find a power assignment for each sensor to achieve a strong connectivity with minimum total transmission power. Extensive results in simulation evaluate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms. Copyright 2008 ACM.

Blogs, Wikis, and Social Bookmark Tools have rapidly emerged on the Web. The reasons for their immediate success are that people are happy to share information, and that these tools provide an infrastructure for doing so without requiring any specific skills. At the moment, there exists no foundational research for these systems, and they provide only very simple structures for organising knowledge. Individual users create their own structures, but these can currently not be exploited for knowledge sharing. The objective of the seminar was to provide theoretical foundations for upcoming Web 2.0 applications and to investigate further applications that go beyond bookmark- and file-sharing. The main research question can be summarized as follows: How will current and emerging resource sharing systems support users to leverage more knowledge and power from the information they share on Web 2.0 applications? Research areas like Semantic Web, Machine Learning, information Retrieval, information Extraction, Social Network Analysis, Natural Language Processing, Library and information Sciences, and Hypermedia systems have been working for a while on these questions. In the workshop, researchers from these areas came together to assess the state of the art and to set up a road map describing the next steps towards the next generation of social software. © 2008 Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings. The execution of clinical guidelines and protocols (CGPs) is a challenging task in high-frequency domains such as Intensive Care Units. On the one hand, sophisticated temporal data abstraction is required to match the low-level information from monitoring devices and electronic patient records with the high-level concepts in the CGPs. On the other hand, the frequency of the data delivered by monitoring devices mandates a highly efficient implementation of the reasoning engine which handles both data abstraction and execution of the guideline. The language Asbru represents CGPs as a hierarchy of skeletal plans and integrates intelligent temporal data abstraction with plan execution to bridge the gap between measurements and concepts in CGPs. We present our Asbru interpreter, which compiles abstraction rules and plans into a network of abstraction modules by the system. This network performs the content of the plans triggered by the arriving patient data. Our approach evaluated to be efficient enough to handle high-frequency data while coping with complex guidelines and temporal data abstraction. © 2008 The authors and IOS Press. All rights reserved.

Log-Polar transform is mentioned as one of the models of the central-fovea visual sensor in a creature sight. Up to now, in the field of image recognition, Log-Polar transform is known widely and is especially used well in recognition of face images. However, since it is the recognition method only to a scaling and a rotation, it mainly remains in application in a 2D space. In this paper, a new Log-Polar transform algorithm which can detect even affine transform parameters is proposed, and this algorithm is expand so that perspective transform invariant can be detected. By using this transform, the pattern recognition within 3D space is possible.

In clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) the medical information is stored in a narrative way. A large part of this information occurs in a negated form. The detection of negation in CPGs is an important task since it helps medical personnel to identify not occurring symptoms and diseases as well as treatment actions that should not be accomplished. We developed algorithms capable of Negation Detection in this kind of medical documents. According to our results, we are convinced that the involvement of syntactical methods can improve Negation Detection, not only in medical writings but also in arbitrary narrative texts. © 2008 Organizing Committee of MIE 2008.
