Advancement in wireless transmission has enabled the communication among multiple devices all over the world, as well as expanding the frontiers of wireless Internet access. As a result of these advancement, numerous devices are questing for wireless connectivity thereby congesting the existing spectrum. If new measures are not taken to reduce depletion of the reserved radio resource, new allocations of wireless Internet access will be impossible, thereby risking the development of the entire wireless ecosystem. The demands for resourceful spectrum consumption have continually driven researchers and stakeholders in the wireless industry to search for spare radio spectrum to offer affordable and reliable wireless connectivity. The TV broadcasting is not fully utilizing the spectrum in some geographical zone. These TV unused spaces called TV White Spaces (TVWS), are well-thought-out to be the probable future resolutions for unavailability of spectrum. The low frequency band (470 to 694 MHz) of the unutilized TV channel has exceptional broadcast features over extensive distances and enables transmissions through high-rise buildings, trees, and mountains. These features allow the applications of TVWS in Internet of Things (IoT), wireless sensor network, wireless connectivity, wireless switching, smart grid and cities, automated transportation, and logistics as well as connectivity in cloud infrastructure. This paper presents a study on the advantages and benefits of television white space as an alternative to wireless broadband connectivity. © 2023 IEEE.

With the development of information technology, a wide variety of data have been accumulated, and there are many methods for analyzing such data. In this study, we model the input data and the metrics between the data based on the assumption that each metric is generated from a continuous latent variable. Specifically, we assume that the input data are generated using low-dimensional latent variables and their projection matrices. We describe a method for estimating the latent variables. Because the generative model defined in this study cannot obtain the Q function analytically, we use the Monte Carlo EM algorithm to approximate the Q function and investigate an efficient parameter estimation method. Experiments using artificial data and the 20 newsgroups dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2022 IEEE.

The neurodegenerative disease known as Alzheimer's disease (AD), which affects people worldwide, is complicated to treat and expensive. Conventional approaches, including manual Support Vector Machine (SVM) based methods with separate feature extraction and preprocessing, lack automation and pose limitations. This project recognizes the pressing need for efficient and automated solutions. Building on existing work that employed SVM and manual processing for Alzheimer's diagnosis, this work proposes a novel approach. Utilizing brain MRI scans and the VGG16 architecture, our automated system achieves high accuracy in predicting both labeled and unlabeled data. The integration of VGG16 ensures a streamlined process, eliminating manual intervention in feature extraction and preprocessing. This automation enhances accessibility, reduces costs, and offers a user-friendly interface for users. In contrast to traditional methods, our proposed system allows users to input MRI scans, facilitating prompt and accurate predictions. Upon analysis, the proposed system provides doctor recommendations and suggests prescriptions. The VGG16-based approach not only ensures superior diagnostic accuracy but also streamlines the entire process, emphasizing the importance of early detection for improved outcomes in Alzheimer's disease management.

SwimVG: Step-wise Multimodal Fusion and Adaption for Visual Grounding

Visual grounding aims to ground an image region through natural language, which heavily relies on cross-modal alignment. Most existing methods transfer visual/linguistic knowledge separately by fully fine-tuning uni-modal pre-trained models, followed by a simple stack of visual-language transformers for multimodal fusion. However, these approaches not only limit adequate interaction between visual and linguistic contexts, but also incur significant computational costs. Therefore, to address these issues, we explore a step-wise multimodal fusion and adaption framework, namely SwimVG. Specifically, SwimVG proposes step-wise multimodal prompts (Swip) and cross-modal interactive adapters (CIA) for visual grounding, replacing the cumbersome transformer stacks for multimodal fusion. Swip can improve the alignment between the vision and language representations step by step, in a token-level fusion manner. In addition, weight-level CIA further promotes multimodal fusion by cross-modal interaction. Swip and CIA are both parameter-efficient paradigms, and they fuse the cross-modal features from shallow to deep layers gradually. Experimental results on four widely-used benchmarks demonstrate that SwimVG achieves remarkable abilities and considerable benefits in terms of efficiency. HVQ-VAE: Variational auto-encoder with hyperbolic vector quantization

Vector quantized-variational autoencoder (VQ-VAE) and its variants have made significant progress in creating discrete latent space via learning a codebook. Previous works on VQ-VAE have focused on discrete latent spaces in Euclidean or in spherical spaces. This paper studies the geometric prior of hyperbolic spaces as a way to improve the learning capacity of VQ-VAE. That being said, working with the VQ-VAE in the hyperbolic space is not without difficulties, and the benefits of using hyperbolic space as the geometric prior for the latent space have never been studied in VQ-VAE. We bridge this gap by developing the VQ-VAE with hyperbolic vector quantization. To this end, we propose the hyperbolic VQ-VAE (HVQ-VAE), which learns the latent embedding of data and the codebook in the hyperbolic space. Specifically, we endow the discrete latent space in the Poincaré ball, such that the clustering algorithm can be formulated and optimized in the Poincaré ball. Thorough experiments against various baselines are conducted to evaluate the superiority of the proposed HVQ-VAE empirically. We show that HVQ-VAE enjoys better image reconstruction, effective codebook usage, and fast convergence than baselines. We also present evidence that HVQ-VAE outperforms VQ-VAE in low-dimensional latent space. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.

Learning activities are an indicator of the learner's desire to learn during the learning process. The pattern of learner action is related to learning activities. In this case, in extracting the learning process, it is necessary to collect a lot of data through analysis of the learning process. The purpose of this study is to recommend and report the performance of an activity tracking system equipped with visual artifacts as an educational data mining approach to analyze action patterns when learners complete the arrangement of program code lines in each programming problem. In this study, data were taken from activity recordings when learners used interactive learning media for a basic programming subject called TOLSYASUPI-EduMed which had problem-solving learning models embedded in their interactions. Learning Analytics is used as a method of this research and data relationships from learner actions during the learning process using the 'if-then' rule. Log data is used for recording and detecting activities carried out by learners. We confirm that the results of the study are based on the findings of the data relationship that if the lines of program code are too long (more than five lines) then almost all learners experience a bottleneck condition. The completion time of each question and the number of iterations in completing the program code lines for each question have also been recorded and have a pattern of connection between the data. The information that has been obtained is then forwarded to teachers or stakeholders as key information to make appropriate feedback to learners based on the results as a means of analyzing and evaluating the programming learning process. © 2022 IEEE.

The recent development of connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technologies has spurred investigations to optimize dense urban traffic to maximize vehicle speed and throughput. This paper explores advisory autonomy, in which real-time driving advisories are issued to the human drivers, thus achieving near-term performance of automated vehicles. Due to the complexity of traffic systems, recent studies of coordinating CAVs have resorted to leveraging deep reinforcement learning (RL). Coarse-grained advisory is formalized as zero-order holds, and we consider a range of hold duration from 0.1 to 40 seconds. However, despite the similarity of the higher frequency tasks on CAVs, a direct application of deep RL fails to be generalized to advisory autonomy tasks. To overcome this, we utilize zero-shot transfer, training policies on a set of source tasks–specific traffic scenarios with designated hold durations–and then evaluating the efficacy of these policies on different target tasks. We introduce Temporal Transfer Learning (TTL) algorithms to select source tasks for zero-shot transfer, systematically leveraging the temporal structure to solve the full range of tasks. TTL selects the most suitable source tasks to maximize the performance of the range of tasks. We validate our algorithms on diverse mixed-traffic scenarios, demonstrating that TTL more reliably solves the tasks than baselines. This paper underscores the potential of coarse-grained advisory autonomy with TTL in traffic flow optimization. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Nature-inspired algorithms have become increasingly prevalent in engineering and mathematical optimization due to their efficacy and adaptability. Among these algorithms, the Monarch Butterfly Optimization Algorithm (MBOA) is a population-based metaheuristic, characterized by its simple implementation and the utilization of the Migration Operator (MO) and Butterfly Adjusting Rate (BAR) to guide the search path of butterflies. However, the algorithm can suffer from susceptibility to local optima traps, early convergence, and inferior performance due to a lack of random factors. To address these challenges, we propose an Enhanced Monarch Butterfly Optimization Algorithm (E-MBOA) that incorporates Ranking-based Selection (RBS) and a Random Jumping strategy. The RBS prioritizes the search direction based on individuals' ranks in the population, enhancing the search process by encouraging the exploration of feasible areas with lower objective function values. By employing the Random Jumping strategy, the process can effectively investigate the search space and avoid local optima, thus mitigating early convergence issues. The proposed model is assessed on a variety of mechanical and engineering design problems. Results are contrasted to other optimization approaches published in the literature, demonstrating that the proposed model offers faster convergence to global optima and effectively avoids local optima traps. E-MBOA's performance validates its feasibility and effectiveness as a powerful tool for resolving complex engineering optimization problems.

The HVAC system, energy storage building, distributed power supply, and other equipment are integrated into the scheduling algorithm, which is aimed at reducing household electricity consumption. It is also assumed that users can provide energy to the grid according to their own conditions. Taking electricity cost and comfort level as optimization targets, a home energy optimization control model for the coordinated management of hybrid energy sources is built. A smart scheduling mechanism based on the improved adaptive particle swarm optimization approach is proposed in order to derive the best time intervals for electric appliances, necessary power for the control of the room temperature for every time frame, and power for charging and discharging of the storage battery at various moments. Simulation results show that through the incorporation of distributed photovoltaic power generation, backup storage by battery, and home energy optimization control, the system efficiently balances between user comfort and electricity consumption. This offers great technical support to the development of home energy management systems. By using time-of-use electricity price for energy acquisition and supply, the optimization control goal is minimizing both power use and cost as well as preserving comfort levels. The hybrid energy management's proposed home energy optimization control model uses an adaptive particle swarm optimization algorithm to find the optimal operation schedules of the electrical appliances, the required power for temperature control in a room, and the charge/discharge power level of the storage battery at each time interval. As per the optimization principle, the proposed dynamic programming algorithm converts the multi-stage problem into a sequence of single-stage problems and solves them separately. Tracking a person with an onboard camera is a very difficult and perhaps technically impossible if one camera is used. In this regard, real-life projects use a series of cameras to achieve the task. The advent of camera installed drone technology has made it possible for researchers and designers to resolve the tracking issues of a single or multiple stagnant devices. This paper presents a method that makes it possible for a drone to recognize hand gestures as control mechanism and follow the person who control it. Furthermore, the method assists in drone object detection using an integrated depth camera that provides video capturing. The OpenCV and Tello were used in this project. A stabilized depth video is for use with current person trackers like the OpenCV tracker. The estimated Tello pose deduced from vision to stabilize the depth image by warping it to a virtual-static camera. This method allows the Tello to obtain not only the tracked person's position and orientation but also their full body pose, which can then be used, for instance, to recognize hand gestures and alter the Tello's behavior. This work has a potential of contributing or enhancing cutting-edge applications such as hands-free photography and videography.
