Place recognition is the foundation for enabling autonomous systems to achieve independent decision-making and safe operations. It is also crucial in tasks such as loop closure detection and global localization within SLAM. Previous methods utilize mundane point cloud representations as input and deep learning-based LiDAR-based Place Recognition (LPR) approaches employing different point cloud image inputs with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) or transformer architectures. However, the recently proposed Mamba deep learning model, combined with state space models (SSMs), holds great potential for long sequence modeling. Therefore, we developed OverlapMamba, a novel network for place recognition, which represents input range views (RVs) as sequences. In a novel way, we employ a stochastic reconstruction approach to build shift state space models, compressing the visual representation. Evaluated on three different public datasets, our method effectively detects loop closures, showing robustness even when traversing previously visited locations from different directions. Relying on raw range view inputs, it outperforms typical LiDAR and multi-view combination methods in time complexity and speed, indicating strong place recognition capabilities and realtime efficiency. Web 3.0 is regarded as a revolutionary paradigm that enables users to securely manage data without a centralized authority. Blockchains, which enable data to be managed in a decentralized and transparent manner, are key technologies for achieving Web 3.0 goals. However, blockchain-based Web 3.0 is still in its infancy, such as ensuring block freshness and optimizing block propagation to improve blockchain performance. In this paper, we develop a freshness-aware block propagation optimization framework for Web 3.0. We first propose a novel metric called Age of Block information (AoBI) based on the concept of age of information to quantify block freshness. AoBI measures the time elapsed from the freshest transaction generation to the completion of block consensus. To make block propagation optimization tractable, we classify miners into five different states and propose a block propagation model for public blockchains inspired by epidemic models. Moreover, considering that the miners are bounded rational, we propose an incentive mechanism based on the evolutionary game for block propagation to improve block propagation efficiency. Numerical results demonstrate that compared with other block propagation mechanisms in public blockchains, the proposed scheme has a higher block forwarding probability, which improves block propagation efficiency and decreases the minimum value of average AoBI. © 2015 IEEE.

Industrial Internet of Things can improve critical infrastructure in energy, transportation, and manufacturing. However, IIoT device and system integration opened security weaknesses that bad actors may exploit, causing huge disruptions and financial losses. IoT network security and privacy must be prioritized to protect key infrastructure. IIoT security issues and solutions are examined in this research. First, we take a look at the state of security and the unique risks that industrial IoT devices are up against, including hacking, illegal access, and cyber-physical assaults. Then, to lessen the impact of these dangers, we investigate cutting-edge security solutions, such as authentication, encryption, and access control systems. Building a robust security architecture specifically for IIoT applications is one of the main goals of the project. To improve safety and anonymity, this system uses cutting-edge innovation like blockchain, AI, and edge computing. We also talk about how privacy-preserving methods like differential privacy and anonymization are important for keeping sensitive information safe while allowing data sharing for analysis and operations. We assess the efficacy of the suggested security protocols and procedures using a battery of case studies and simulations. Reducing the attack surface and improving the resilience of IIoT systems can be achieved by a multi-layered security approach that includes effective privacy protections. We conclude by outlining our research's larger implications, which include the importance of standardization, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder collaboration in ensuring the safe and privacy-protecting deployment of IIoT technologies in vital infrastructure. Protecting vital infrastructure from cyber threats is our ultimate goal, and our work helps build IIoT systems that are more secure and dependable.

Meta-Path Based Graph Contrastive Learning for Micro-Video Recommendation

Nowadays, micro-video sharing platforms have become popular tools for people creating and viewing micro-videos in daily life. Micro-video recommendation task has attracted significant attention from researchers, recently. The key to a high-quality micro-video recommendation system is learning meaningful user and micro-video representations. Recently, many graph neural networks (GNNs) are proposed to learn node representations in graphs, which could be useful for recommendation tasks. However, we argue that directly utilizing existing GNNs in micro-video recommendations is ill-posed. The reasons are: (1) most previous GNNs fail to capture the heterogeneity of heterogeneous graphs since they are designed for homogeneous graphs;(2) they overemphasize node proximity and could hurt the robustness of node embeddings. In contrast to previous work, we propose a meta-path-based graph contrastive learning network (MPGCL) that learns more meaningful user and video embeddings for recommendation. Specifically, we yield homogeneous graphs for user type and video type to better capture heterogeneity based on a well-designed meta-path-based random walk strategy. Furthermore, to learn more robust node embeddings that are less sensitive to noise, we propose a graph contrastive learning network on different types of homogeneous graphs, which maximizes the consistency between graph representations with different views. We do extensive experiments on three real-world datasets and the results show that our model can learn more meaningful embeddings for user and micro-videos and outperforms the strong baselines. © 2022, The Authors. Developments in data science and related fields have created plentiful technologies for the business world. The rapid developments in new technologies obstruct analytics teams’ data science technology identification, selection, and management processes. Utilizing an improper set of tools, teams encounter problems and inefficiencies when managing their technology architecture. We undertake this problem by providing a technology selection approach synthesizing quantitative multi-criteria decision-making methods with qualitative group decision-making approaches. The purpose of this study is to develop a comprehensive technology selection methodology for data Science that satisfies principles for developing a strategic technology management toolkit. Following the principles for developing technology management tools, the proposed methodology enables the decision-makers to compare the data science tools and select the most suitable alternative according to their data science project requirements. The practitioners can identify the technology categories, functional and non-functional requirements, differentiating features, and possible technology stacks. While the existing studies in this domain consider the technology selection problem in isolation and investigate a subset of technologies, our approach considers the end-to-end data science processes from the technology management perspective to provide data experts with a systematic approach exposing integrable technologies.

Equilibria, Efficiency, and Inequality in Network Formation for Hiring and Opportunity

Professional networks — the social networks among people in a given line of work — can serve as a conduit for job prospects and other opportunities. Here we propose a model for the formation of such networks and the transfer of opportunities within them. In our theoretical model, individuals strategically connect with others to maximize the probability that they receive opportunities from them. We explore how professional networks balance connectivity, where connections facilitate opportunity transfers to those who did not get them from outside sources, and congestion, where some individuals receive too many opportunities from their connections and waste some of them. We show that strategic individuals are over-connected at equilibrium relative to a social optimum, leading to a price of anarchy for which we derive nearly tight asymptotic bounds. We also show that, at equilibrium, individuals form connections to those who provide similar benefit to them as they provide to others. Thus, our model provides a microfoundation in professional networking contexts for the fundamental sociological principle of homophily, that "similarity breeds connection" [29], which in our setting is realized as a form of status homophily based on alignment in individual benefit. We further explore how, even if individuals are a priori equally likely to receive opportunities from outside sources, equilibria can be unequal, and we provide nearly tight bounds on how unequal they can be. Finally, we explore the ability for online platforms to intervene to improve social welfare and show that natural heuristics may result in adverse effects at equilibrium. Our simple model allows for a surprisingly rich analysis of coordination problems in professional networks and suggests many directions for further exploration. © 2024, CC BY.

A study on the deviations in performance of FNNs and CNNs in the realm of grayscale adversarial images

Neural Networks are prone to having lesser accuracy in the classification of images with noise perturbation. Convolutional Neural Networks, CNNs are known for their unparalleled accuracy in the classification of benign images. But our study shows that they are extremely vulnerable to noise addition while Feed-forward Neural Networks, FNNs show very less correspondence with noise perturbation, maintaining their accuracy almost undisturbed. FNNs are observed to be better at classifying noise-intensive, single-channeled images that are just sheer noise to human vision. In our study, we have used the hand-written digits dataset, MNIST with the following architectures: FNNs with 1 and 2 hidden layers and CNNs with 3, 4, 6 and 8 convolutions and analyzed their accuracies. FNNs stand out to show that irrespective of the intensity of noise, they have a classification accuracy of more than 85%. In our analysis of CNNs with this data, the deceleration of classification accuracy of CNN with 8 convolutions was half of that of the rest of the CNNs. Correlation analysis and mathematical modelling of the accuracy trends act as roadmaps to these conclusions. © 2022, CC BY.

A smart city's transportation system can be en-hanced if there is an accurate prediction of the traffic flow which develops in an area as time goes on. This article investigates the relative accuracy of predicting traffic flow at target intersections in a city, taking advantage of two models: Tab Net and a hybrid Transformer-XGBoost. Several metrics including Mean Squared Error (MSE) and Coefficient of determination (R2 score) among others were employed to evaluate the models employed. A sequential deep learning model known as Tab Net triumphing in the competition with MSE, RMSE, and MAE being 34.48, 5.87, and 3.73 respectively, and R2 score as high as 0.917, although performing well while enhancing identification of features such as year and junction. On the other hand, while reporting similar R2 score as low as 0.184, the Transformer-XGBoost hybrid model had structuring limitations where complex interdependencies and time variations were involved recording MSE, RMSE and MAE as 338.52, 18.40 and 13.24 respectively. The graphs of residuals and QQ plots served to uncover that the hybrid model failed making a right prediction during high traffic volume days, as general tabnet results shown in the final graphs are more stable. Following investigation of the models in this study, the researchers suggest implementing TabNet as a better option for traffic management explaining its high accuracy and providing valuable guidance for cities. This would result in improvement of the traffic flow prediction, which is highly needed for effective urban mobility solutions. © 2025 IEEE.

Multi-Resolution, Multi-Horizon Distributed Solar PV Power Forecasting with Forecast Combinations

Distributed, small-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are being installed at a rapidly increasing rate. This can cause major impacts on distribution networks and energy markets. As a result, there is a significant need for improved forecasting of the power generation of these systems at different time resolutions and horizons. However, the performance of forecasting models depends on the resolution and horizon. Forecast combinations (ensembles), that combine the forecasts of multiple models into a single forecast may be robust in such cases. Therefore, in this paper, we provide comparisons and insights into the performance of five state-of-the-art forecast models and existing forecast combinations at multiple resolutions and horizons. We propose a forecast combination approach based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) that will enable a forecaster to produce accurate forecasts for the task at hand by weighting the forecasts produced by individual models. Furthermore, we compare the performance of the proposed combination approach with existing forecast combination approaches. A comprehensive evaluation is conducted using a real-world residential PV power data set measured at 25 houses located in three locations in the United States. The results across four different resolutions and four different horizons show that the PSO-based forecast combination approach outperforms the use of any individual forecast model and other forecast combination counterparts, with an average Mean Absolute Scaled Error reduction by 3.81% compared to the best performing individual model. Noise-Robust and Resource-Efficient ADMM-based Federated Learning

Federated learning (FL) leverages client-server communications to train global models on decentralized data. However, communication noise or errors can impair model accuracy. To address this problem, we propose a novel FL algorithm that enhances robustness against communication noise while also reducing communication load. We derive the proposed algorithm through solving the weighted least-squares (WLS) regression problem as an illustrative example. We first frame WLS regression as a distributed convex optimization problem over a federated network employing random scheduling for improved communication efficiency. We then apply the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to iteratively solve this problem. To counteract the detrimental effects of cumulative communication noise, we introduce a key modification by eliminating the dual variable and implementing a new local model update at each participating client. This subtle yet effective change results in using a single noisy global model update at each client instead of two, improving robustness against additive communication noise. Furthermore, we incorporate another modification enabling clients to continue local updates even when not selected by the server, leading to substantial performance improvements. Our theoretical analysis confirms the convergence of our algorithm in both mean and the mean-square senses, even when the server communicates with a random subset of clients over noisy links at each iteration.
