Automated compiler analyses and transformation techniques aim at improving design productivity of the mapping process of applications expressed in high-level programming languages to FPGAs. These transformations allow a compiler tool to reduce the number of design cycles and eliminate tedious and error-prone low-level transformations required in this mapping process, while still leading to good designs. Scalar replacement, also known as register promotion, is a very important data-oriented transformation that leads to designs that reduce the number of external memory accesses, and thus reduce execution time, at the expense of storage resource's. In this article we present a combination of loop transformation techniques, namely loop unrolling, loop splitting, and loop interchange with scalar replacement to enable partial data reuse on computations expressed by tightly nested loops pervasive in image processing algorithms. We describe a performance modelling in the presence of partial data reuse. Our experimental results reveal that our model accurately captures the non-trivial execution effects of pipelined implementations in the presence of partial data reuse due to the need to fill-up data buffers. The model thus allows a compiler to explore a large design space with high accuracy, ultimately allowing quickly it to find better designs than designs with limited manual search or brute-force approaches. © 2008 Taylor & Francis.

Our work in this area started as a research project but when L2F joined TecnoVoz, a Portuguese national consortium including Academia and Industry partners, our focus shifted to real-time professional solutions. The integration of our domain-independent Spoken Dialogue System (SDS) framework into commercial products led to a major reengineering process. This paper describes the changes that the framework went through and that deeply affected its entire architecture. The communication core was enhanced, the modules interfaces were redefined for an easier integration, the SDS deployment process was optimized and the framework robustness was improved. The work was done according to software engineering guidelines and making use of design patterns. © 2008 Association for Computational Linguistics.

The paper asserts that the process of emergence which constitutes the cornerstone of contemporary sociological thought on organization lies also at the root of the process of organizational engineering. Furthermore it proposes that if the study of HRIS has crucial organizational implications, then the study of HRIS should encompass also engineering and modelling considerations. An organizational modelling framework is put forward which contains the following propositions, also applicable to the design of HRIS from an integrated perspective: (1) Enhanced traceability of organizational agents, (2) Situated enterprise modelling, (3) Model acquisition from action repositories, (4) Capturing and modelling work practices, (5) Aligning design and execution.

This paper presents a PhD research plan related with the alignment problem between the Enterprise Architecture (re)definition and the information systems Architecture (re)implementation. This problem is located in the Organizational information systems area hence exists an integration between Human, machines and information. The goal of this research is to define a control methodology that (i) allows the specification of an information systems Architecture starting from an a priori defined Enterprise Architecture reference and that (ii) enables the information systems Architecture specification alignment whenever facing Enterprise Architecture reference changes in time and finally that (iii) controls information systems Architecture perturbations. To achieve those goals we propose to study the state of the art related with the control systems taken from disparate scientific areas and to identify the probably useful concepts and models to this research. The research activity network, the research methodology to be used and the expected outcome are also identified.

Despite the considerable work on agent frameworks, user interfaces to manage these are mostly script based. Even though some solutions provide graphical interfaces to build agent worlds these are quite limited and overly dependent on textual input. Recently, calligraphic systems using sketch-based and pen-input have emerged as a viable alternative to conventional direct-manipulation interfaces in a wide range of areas, such as user interface design or mechanical systems simulation. In this paper, we present a preliminary approach to a calligraphic interface for managing agents. It recognizes gestures drawn by users allowing them to create and manage agent worlds flexibly and efficiently using a concise language. Copyright © UNION Agency - Science Press.

Human computer interaction techniques that do not rely on devices are often perceived as more natural by users. Many of these, include hand pose recognition as an interaction technique appealing to users. In this paper we describe and evaluate two techniques for hand pose recognition, based on CALI, a general library for gesture recognition. This library was initially designed for calligraphic recognition, however recent usage shows that CALI is able to support other applications. One unexplored research area includes its application to hand pose recognition, even though there are already different approaches to the subject using techniques such as Hidden Markov Models or Model-based tracking. We developed and tested a new approach to recognize hand poses taking advantage of the features obtained from CALI. To explore this approach we implemented two techniques. The first recognizes bare-hands by their outer contours, the second uses color marks on each fingertip to track the hand and recognize its pose. Experimental results show that both approaches present recognitions rates around 93%. © The Eurographics Association 2006.

We present electromyography as an interface to control computer applications. Our prototype makes possible for users to control any application through muscle contractions. Electromyographic device portability and the monitoring possibility for any muscle voluntarily contracted can bring great benefits at the mobility level as in accessibility issues. Through operating system events emulation and their association with determined muscle contractions we can replace the pointing device or some keyboard elements, achieving control of any application. Usability evaluations validate electromyography as a daily wearable interface where we show that it can be used even in a mobility context. Considering accessibility, we present a synergy between applications that ease message writing. Evaluations show that this synergy outperforms existent text-entry interfaces, based on point and click approaches.

Although there have been great advances in business process modeling as a means to better understand and control organizations and improve the development of information systems, the existence of functions - like IT, logistics, financial, etc. - is an inescapable reality in organizations, that strongly influences aspects like change processes, or the formation of organizational units, even if a culture of "process orientation" is established. This paper tries to clarify the concept of organizational function, discusses certain organizational artifacts that seem to be of a functional nature and proposes an ontology for the purpose of allowing a consistent and coherent modeling of this recursive self-maintenance mechanism of organizations. © 2006 IEEE.
