Acoustic modelling using deep learning for Quran recitation assistance

Recent advancements in computer science and engineering have significantly boosted interest in and success rate of speech recognition systems. Sophisticated speech recognition systems are being developed for a variety of languages having wide-spread applications. Arabic being one of the most widely used languages in the world, augmented by religious importance, is a potential candidate in this domain, however rich vocabulary and multiple dialects open up new challenges for development of Arabic speech recognition processes. This paper focuses on development of an Arabic isolated speech recognition system for the vocabulary of Holy Quran using Mel frequency cepstral coefficients and deep neural networks. The proposed system is capable of identifying individual words from a recited verse with reasonable accuracy. It targets the 362 unique words of the first and the last 19 chapters of the Holy Quran and uses 14 hours of audio data to demonstrate the working prototype of the system. A user-friendly, web-based application has also been developed for transcription of recitations. The software is specified to make an effort in spreading the right way of recitation of the Holy Quran. The presented architecture can be extended to a complete automatic speech recognition system to help people practice recitations, mapping speech to transcription and then matching the transcribed utterance with standard templates of correct recitation to identify reciter’s short comings. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

Interaction-aware Trust Management Scheme for IoT systems With Machine Learning-Based Attack Detection

The recent Internet of Things (IoT) adoption has revolutionized various applications while introducing significant security and privacy challenges. Traditional security solutions are unsuitable for IoT systems due to their dynamicity, heterogeneity, and resource constraints. Trust-based solutions are emerging as promising alternatives due to their ability to track the dynamic behavior in IoT systems. However, existing trust management schemes are implemented at the device level, raising several challenges, including device modification that compromises certification and scalability, increased network overhead, and higher device resource utilization. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel trust management scheme that shifts its implementation to a higher layer in the IoT system, specifically to the IoT access layer (e.g., gateway). The proposed scheme establishes trust based on typical device interactions with the gateway without requiring additional information from the device. It relies on objective attributes spanning communication, security, and advanced dimensions to compute the trust value of an IoT device. Additionally, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is integrated to determine if the device acts maliciously or behaves normally. Simulation results demonstrate a notable improvement in the detection rate, primarily due to incorporating the proposed ANN, compared to the threshold-based approaches in the literature. Overall, the improvements highlight the significant advantage of the proposed scheme's robustness. © 2025 IEEE.

Abnormal event detection in video surveillance is critical for security, traffic management, and industrial monitoring applications. This paper introduces an innovative methodology for anomaly detection in video data, encompassing three primary stages: preprocessing, feature learning, and anomaly detection. We employ background subtraction and noise reduction during preprocessing to refine the data. The feature-learning stage involves training an LSTM autoencoder to capture the essential features of normal video sequences. For anomaly detection, we map video data to a lower-dimensional space (latent code) and compare it against the distribution of codes from normal sequences. We determine regularity scores and identify local minima points exceeding a specified threshold while scrutinizing shadows between adjacent maxima to confirm and pinpoint anomalies. When tested on the CUHK Avenue and UMN datasets, our methodology demonstrated performance with AUCs of 93.8% and 94.1%, respectively, outperforming several baseline models. Our results show the high precision of our method that can detect anomalies, highlighting its potential advantages that it can achieve for enhancing systems of surveillance. © The Author(s) 2025.

Robust steganographic approach using generative adversarial network and compressive autoencoder

Nowadays, social media applications and websites have become a crucial part of people’s lives;for sharing their moments, contacting their families and friends, or even for their jobs. However, the fact that these valuable data are transferred via the Internet and open channels, which are vulnerable to attacks and espionage, requires using defense methods to improve the security of data transmission. Recently, the progress of Deep Learning (DL) inspired researchers to use it with security methods such as steganography, the art of hiding secret data in unrelated content. DL and steganography combined enhanced the hiding properties, especially in the Coverless Image Steganography (CIS) methods. In this paper, we propose a Compressive Coverless Image Steganography (CCIS) model, which is a generated-based CIS, to improve the capacity and robustness of Steganography. This model uses the compressive autoencoder to compress the message, thus increasing the capacity, and uses the Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to generate a stego image from the compressed vector, thus enhancing concealment ability, besides using a regression model and optimization method to extract the data. Another version was designed to enable sending binary messages by replacing the compressive autoencoder network with a robust mapping rule. Experiments show that the proposed model could improve the characteristics of Steganography. Furthermore, the proposed model could extract binary messages with 256 bits from attacked stego images with 99% recovery accuracy. Thus, capacity and robustness were enhanced using our model with both images and text as secret messages. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) are developing so fast that they can bring revolutionary changes in ecological sustainability, public health, and community welfare. In contrast, the present waste management system has a set of inefficiencies due to some challenges, such as poor waste stream segregation, limited real-time data analysis, and negligible integration of recent technology. These challenges lead to environmental degradation, public health hazards, and inefficient usage of resources. This research targets these challenges by designing an IWM framework like AI-IoT for smart waste management. The system employs AI models powered by IoT sensors for efficient waste collection, classification, and optimization of recycling schedules. CNN (convolutional neural networks) with transfer learning enabled by Res-Net provides high-accuracy image recognition, which can be used for waste classification. Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) allow multilingual users to interact and communicate properly in any linguistic environment. Data collected from IoT-enabled smart bins is transmitted in real-time to a central control system for dynamic decision-making and follow-up analysis. A pilot exercise to verify the system's effectiveness was implemented in metropolitan settings to show the transformation: landfill dependency was decreased by 30 %, recycling efficiency was greatly increased to 90 %, and thus the cost of waste management was optimized. At the same time, environmental health inequity, causing pathogen-related threats, was reduced by 35 %. The model has an accuracy of 96.8 %. The features of the proposed framework not only provide solutions to the existing inefficiencies but also enhance scalability, cost-effectiveness, and global environmental standardization. Design of a ML-based trust prediction model using intelligent TrustBoxes in challenged networks

Challenged networks (CNs) contain resource-constrained nodes deployed in regions where human intervention is difficult. Opportunistic networks (OppNets) are CNs with no predefined source-to-destination paths. Due to their inherent properties, CNs and OppNets are highly susceptible to black-hole (BH) attacks, resulting in degraded packet-delivery ratio. In this work, an ML-based trust prediction model (MLTPM) is proposed to identify potential BH nodes in OppNets. MLTPM uses a novel function to calculate the total-trust-value (TTV) of each node. Intelligent TrustBoxes are introduced in the network to identify possible BH nodes, using TTV, along with five more node-behaviour features. TrustBoxes reduce the computational overhead of the resource-constrained nodes. Three simulated scenarios are compared - no detection, non-ML-based detection, and MLTPM, each using epidemic, prophet, and spray-and-wait routing protocols. MLTPM performs best with spray-and-wait, exhibiting about 25.21% and 80% mean improvement in delivery-ratio and dropped-message numbers respectively, compared to non-ML-based detection. An overall 12.62% improvement in delivery-ratio and 26.7% improvement in dropped messages is observed using MLTPM, compared to the above-mentioned scenarios. © 2024 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Data-driven output regulation control for constrained linear systems

This study introduces a data-driven approach for state and output feedback control addressing the constrained output regulation problem in unknown linear discrete-time systems. Our method ensures effective tracking performance while satisfying the state and input constraints, even when system matrices are not available. We first establish a sufficient condition necessary for the existence of a solution pair to the regulator equation and propose a data-based approach to obtain the feedforward and feedback control gains for state feedback control using linear programming. Furthermore, we design a refined Luenberger observer to accurately estimate the system state, while keeping the estimation error within a predefined set. By combining output regulation theory, we develop an output feedback control strategy. The stability of the closed-loop system is rigorously proved to be asymptotically stable by further leveraging the concept of λ-contractive sets.

Drought is an environmental and economic problem. Sustainable ecosystems, water resources, food security, and all are severely affected by drought. Due to the increasing frequency and severity of droughts caused by climate change. Effective drought modeling is crucial for early warning systems and risk mitigation. Recent advances in machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques have been developed as potential drought modeling tools that offer accurate drought modeling, providing policymakers and decision-makers with insightful information. The geographical scope of this study is the region of South Asia. This region is selected because of its heavy reliance on agriculture and vulnerability to droughts. The review offers a thorough grasp of how drought conditions are evaluated by gathering and analyzing the most important drought indicators and metrics specific to South Asia. The paper explores the current state- of-the-art in ML and DL (Complex Machine learning and deep learning models) for drought modeling, highlighting current challenges such as incomplete and inconsistent datasets, Lack of explainability and interpretability in complex ML/DL models, unavailability of benchmarks. Based on these challenges, this review suggests the following techniques to address these challenges: Data integration (Data fusion), distributed machine learning (Federated Learning) and explainable AI (XAI, SHAP, LIME, etc.). © 2013 IEEE.

Human activity recognition systems using wearable sensors is an important issue in pervasive computing, which applies to various domains related to healthcare, context aware and pervasive computing, sports, surveillance and monitoring, and the military. Three approaches can be considered for activity recognition: video sensor-based, physical sensor-based, and environmental sensor-based. This paper investigates the related work regarding the physical sensor-based approaches to motion processing. In this paper, a wide range of artificial intelligence models, from single classifications to methods based on deep learning, have been reviewed. The human activity detection accuracy of different methods, under natural and experimental conditions poses several challenges. These challenges cause problems regarding the accuracy and applicability of the proposed methods. This paper analyzes the methods, challenges, approaches, and future work. An Intelligent Privacy Protection Scheme for Efficient Edge Computation Offloading in IoV

As a pivotal enabler of intelligent transportation system(ITS), Internet of vehicles(Io V) has aroused extensive attention from academia and industry. The exponential growth of computation-intensive, latency-sensitive,and privacy-aware vehicular applications in Io V result in the transformation from cloud computing to edge computing,which enables tasks to be offloaded to edge nodes(ENs) closer to vehicles for efficient execution. In ITS environment,however, due to dynamic and stochastic computation offloading requests, it is challenging to efficiently orchestrate offloading decisions for application requirements. How to accomplish complex computation offloading of vehicles while ensuring data privacy remains challenging. In this paper, we propose an intelligent computation offloading with privacy protection scheme, named COPP. In particular, an Advanced Encryption Standard-based encryption method is utilized to implement privacy protection. Furthermore, an online offloading scheme is proposed to find optimal offloading policies. Finally, experimental results demonstrate that COPP significantly outperforms benchmark schemes in the performance of both delay and energy consumption.
