Towards a robust and fault-tolerant multicast discovery architecture for global computing grids

Global grid systems with potentially millions of services require a very effective and efficient service discov- ery/location mechanism. Current grid environments, due to their smaller size, rely mainly on centralised service directories. Large-scale systems need a decentralised service discovery system that operates reliably in a dynamic and error-prone environment. Work has been done in studying flat, decentralised discovery architectures. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical discovery archi- tecture that provides a more scalable and efficient approach. We describe our design rationale for a k-ary tree-based fault-tolerant discovery architecture that also acts as an intelligent routing network for client requests. We show that it is possible to provide ad hoc multicast discovery of services even without end-to-end multicast availability. The system provides clients with the ability to search for services with incomplete information using descriptive service attributes. Our results demonstrate that this approach is well suited to wide-area discovery if fast discovery, high availability, scalability and good performance are crucial requirements. © 2005 SWPS.

A multi-level model, that provides a hierarchically structured description of a complex, multi-scale limb system is proposed in this paper for predicting and analyzing movement patters generated by various activation signals. The levels, the sub-models on each level and their interconnections are developed and described following a systematic modelling procedure. The computational properties (degree of freedom and differential index) of the developed model have been analyzed and a sub-model has been transformed to meet the index-one requirement for solving the resulting differential algebraic equation (DAE) model by standard methods implemented in MATLAB. The model is extensively verified against engineering expectations using parameter values found in the literature, and a good agreement was found. We propose adaptive nonlinear auto-associative modeling (ANAM) based on Locally Linear Embedding algorithm (LLE) for learning intrinsic principal features of each concept separately and recognition thereby. Unlike traditional supervised manifold learning algorithm, the proposed ANAM algorithm has several advantages: 1) it implicitly embodies discriminant information because the suboptimal parameters of ANAM are determined based on error rate of the validation set. 2) it avoids the curse of dimensionality without loss accuracy because recognition is completed in the original space. Experiments on character and digit databases show that the advantages of the proposed ANAM algorithm. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

This paper presents a new algorithm for parallel solution of security constrained optimal power flow (SCOPF) with a nonlinear interior point method (IPM). In the parallel algorithm proposed in this paper, the SCOPF problem is easily decomposed and distributed to a set of processors where the computations are done independently on a subset of the contingency states. Moreover, a full AC model is used in this parallel algorithm. The new parallel algorithm has been tested for accuracy and speedup with two systems: one with 57 buses, 80 branches and 9 contingencies, another with 3493 buses, 6689 branches and 79 contingencies. With less than 1% relative error and more than a factor of 10 speedup, the test results demonstrate that this new parallel algorithm with IPM is accurate and efficient for large-scale SCOPF problems.

This paper aims to take general tensors as inputs for supervised learning. A supervised tensor learning (STL) framework is established for convex optimization based learning techniques such as support vector machines (SVM) and minimax probability machines (MPM). Within the STL framework, many conventional learning machines can be generalized to take n/sup th/-order tensors as inputs. We also study the applications of tensors to learning machine design and feature extraction by linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Our method for tensor based feature extraction is named the tenor rank-one discriminant analysis (TR1DA). These generalized algorithms have several advantages: 1) reduce the curse of dimension problem in machine learning and data mining; 2) avoid the failure to converge; and 3) achieve better separation between the different categories of samples. As an example, we generalize MPM to its STL version, which is named the tensor MPM (TMPM). TMPM learns a series of tensor projections iteratively. It is then evaluated against the original MPM. Our experiments on a binary classification problem show that TMPM significantly outperforms the original MPM.

This paper describes the robust reading competitions for ICDAR 2003. With the rapid growth in research over the last few years on recognizing text in natural scenes, there is an urgent need to establish some common benchmark datasets and gain a clear understanding of the current state of the art. We use the term 'robust reading' to refer to text images that are beyond the capabilities of current commercial OCR packages. We chose to break down the robust reading problem into three subproblems and run competitions for each stage, and also a competition for the best overall system. The subproblems we chose were text locating, character recognition and word recognition. By breaking down the problem in this way, we hoped to gain a better understanding of the state of the art in each of the subproblems. Furthermore, our methodology involved storing detailed results of applying each algorithm to each image in the datasets, allowing researchers to study in depth the strengths and weaknesses of each algorithm. The text-locating contest was the only one to have any entries. We give a brief description of each entry and present the results of this contest, showing cases where the leading entries succeed and fail. We also describe an algorithm for combining the outputs of the individual text locators and show how the combination scheme improves on any of the individual systems. © Springer-Verlag 2005.

Content based image retrieval is an active research area of pattern recognition. A new method of extracting global texture energy descriptors is proposed and it is combined with features describing the color aspect of texture, suitable for image retrieval. The same features are also used for image classification, by its semantic content. An exemplar fuzzy system for aerial image retrieval and classification is proposed. The fuzzy system calculates the degree that a class, such as sea, clouds, desert, forests and plantations, participates in the input image. Target applications include remote sensing, computer vision, forestry, fishery, agricultures, oceanography and weather forecasting. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

This article discusses the basic ideas and the practical applications of information acquisition in relation to psychophysics theory as implemented via the soft-haptics concept for Internet based robotic teleoperation systems. Instead of making decisions with fast but local dispatching functions, the increasing computing power and up-to-moment information provisioning have made possible real-time vehicle scheduling in an automated material handling environment in 300mm semiconductor manufacturing. To our best knowledge, this paper is the first work to adopt the scheduling approach to solve the 300mm vehicle transportation problems. We adopt Petri nets to model the coupling dynamics among transport jobs and OHT vehicles in an intrabay loop. The congestion phenomenon among OHT vehicles is captured. The OHT scheduling problem is then formulated into an integer programming problem whose goal is to efficiently allocate OHT vehicles to jobs such that average job delivery time is minimized. A solution methodology that combines Lagrangian relaxation and the surrogate subgradient methods [13] is developed. To reduce computational efforts in solving each subproblem optimally, an approximation method is developed to solve for subproblems. A heuristic algorithm is developed to adjust the dual solution to a feasible schedule. Numerical results demonstrate that our solution methodology can generate good schedules within a reasonable amount of computation time for realistic problems. Compared to a popular vehicle dispatching rule, our approach can achieve 25.6% improvements on the average delivery time in our realistic test cases.
