For very large document collections or high volume streams of documents, finding relevant documents is a major information filtering problem. One of the main types of information retrieval systems produces a word frequency measure estimated by some important parts of the document using neural network approaches. This paper reports a new network structure for this task. It is specialised considering the main difficulties of these kinds of applications, namely, the calculation time complexity. It will be pointed out that the calculation, hence, the learning time is much reduced applying the new algorithm, however, the result is significantly improved compared to the former approaches, which offer a possibility to increase the number of considered words, hence, improve the effectiveness of information filtering systems.

A high performance parallel network simulation environment was developed in the SR2201 project, The SR2201 is one of the highest performance massively parallel supercomputers in the world. The enhanced simulation algorithm achieved a 2.4 times increase in simulation speed compared with conventional simulation methodology. A 98% detection rate for all design errors before physical design contributed to the shortening of development time.

A multstatic frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar system is under development for use in the control system of autonomous vehicles. The aim of the system, named Colarado, is the 3D location of obstacles in the surrounding environment. In this paper a laboratory prototype system version, the demonstrator, is described and current results are presented.

A non-traditional adaptive predictor is successfully compared with a neural network. It combines several simple Markov chain-based predictors gained from Bayesian estimation with forgetting. It can describe non-linear, stochastic digitized dynamic systems with finite memory and slowly varying parameters. Its complexity is linear in the number of used models m and the number of input levels mu, and quadratic in the number of output levels my. This is in sharp contrast with the corresponding full Markov predictor whose complexity is (my mu)m+1.

The paper presents the results of an application-based reliability study of distributed computer control systems with very high reliability demand, e.g. for supervision and control of power plants and energy distribution systems. A reliability classification scheme is presented and typical redundant control system structures are evaluated and classified due to their system reliability Special focus is placed on assessing the influence of the communication system on total system reliability.

An object-oriented modular approach to the engineering of complex robotic systems emphasizes reliability, reusability, ease of development, and user and network interfaces. This modular approach integrates many architectural principles and computational techniques which support adaptive and learning capability at the local, modular level. The TETROBOT is a modular and reconfigurable robotic system which was developed to demonstrate the reliable performance in a wide variety of task domains through reconfiguration of the same fundamental hardware and software components. Such a modular approach emphasizes the synthesis and integration of engineering modules and takes advantage of object-oriented engineering principles to design for a family of tasks. This paper provides an overview of the TETROBOT modular system and describes three modular systems in other applications domains.

This paper deals with simultaneous control of acceleration transmission, wheel load fluctuation, suspension deflection and sprung mass displacement. The control theory is based on the robust H/sub /spl infin// control theory with the consideration of the modeling errors lumped into an unstructured uncertainty acting on the unperturbed plant. The design method is new and powerful for electronic car suspension's control systems, as it presents a new approach to the designers for the computation of a controller maintaining robust stability while guaranteeing the performance in a wide frequency range, even in the case of the controller is applied to the actual plant. Additionally, the paper emphasizes that the assumptions in the modeling step may lead to unrealistic control designs and, as an example, the effect of the rigidity assumption on the behavior of the open loop system is discussed.
