Indonesia is earthquake and tsunami prone areas, included Sumatera Island. Bandar Lampung is also vulnerable to earthquake and tsunami, especially Kangkung fishing village in Lampung Bay. Disaster risk reduction is very important to be implemented in the cases of earthquake and tsunami, which can save more life and build resilience in facing the hazard. This research aimed to study how the knowledge, awareness, and resilience of people in Kangkung fishing village can strengthen the earthquake and tsunami disaster risk reduction. This research conducted by quantitative methods. Survey and interview of 53 respondents were conducted as well as data collecting approached by purposive sampling. The results found that there is little knowledge and awareness of people in Kangkung fishing village of the hazard of earthquake and tsunami. Therefore, this research proposed a model of "Community-Based Resilience Strategy"Model of earthquake and tsunami disaster risk reduction. It is a comprehensive and sustainable model of how people take a part in disaster risk reduction by intensive participatory. Conclusion of this research emphasized that disaster risk reduction is a big matter in marginalized society such as people in Kangkung fishing village. The "Community-Based Resilience Strategy"Model of earthquake and tsunami disaster risk reduction that may increase the knowledge and awareness to become more resilience. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Analysing Factors Affecting the Adoption of Ride-Hailing Services (RHS) in India? A StepWise LCCA-MCDM Modeling Approach

The study examines heterogeneity in travel behaviour among ride-hailing services (RHS) users by including attitudes, in order to reinforce conventional user-segmentation approaches. Simultaneously, prioritization of ride-hailing specific attributes was carried out to assess how RHS will operate in a sustainable way. The study initially examines latent heterogeneity in users through a LCCA model, and subsequently prioritizes key RHS-specific attributes for each cluster using and MCDM techniques. Three clusters were identified, based on individuals’ attitudes and covariates (socio-demographics, land-use attributes, and travel habits). The largest cluster is termed as Tech-savvy ride-hailing-ready individuals (48%), who have higher technological ability, and show maximum acceptance towards RHS. The second largest cluster, termed as Traditional active-travelling individuals (28%), display least proclivity towards RHS, probably due to their technological inhibition coupled with their greater attachment to traditional travel modes. Lastly, the Multimodal PV-loving individuals (24%) are mostly vehicle-owners but also prefer RHS for occasional trips. The final ranking obtained from the analysis revealed that travel time, reliability, and flexibility (motivators);travel cost, and waiting time (deterrents) are perceived as the key attributes influencing RHS adoption in the Indian context. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.

Crack interaction and fracturing of geomaterials with multiscale cracks

Geomaterials contain numerous cracks whose interaction affects the macroscopic mechanical properties of the materials significantly. We propose a mechanical model of cracks of 3 scale levels to investigate the pattern of crack propagation and possible failure modes produced. For modelling crack interaction between different scale levels, we model the unloading domain of influence of a single crack as the sphere with the diameter being the crack size drawn around the crack center. When the tip of a lower scale crack propagates into the influence domain of a crack of a higher scale level, the propagating crack of a lower scale will be unloaded and never grow from this tip. Propagation and coalescence of cracks of different scale levels for different initial crack concentration result in different patterns of cracks propagation and failure. For relatively lower initial crack concentrations, the interaction of cracks of the first scale level dominates, producing failure due to the coalescence of cracks of the first scale level. With the increase of the initial crack concentration, the coalescence of cracks of the third scale level dominates leading to failure at a higher initial concentration. With the further increase of the initial crack concentration, the failure is produced by the coalescence of cracks of the second scale level. At even higher initial crack concentrations the failure is again produced by the coalescence of cracks of the first scale level. The dynamic strength decreases with the increase in the initial crack concentration. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

Household energy-saving interventions are essential in reducing energy consumption in residential buildings. One of the effective interventions is Household Energy-Saving Option (HESO). However, the pricing strategy of this innovative intervention has not been explored. This study aims to establish a feasible valuation strategy for HESO to facilitate the application of market-based energy-saving interventions among households. This study first provides a pricing strategy of HESO from a market zero-profit perspective. It continues by developing a price cap and floor for HESO's market price. The theoretical pricing model was validated by a field experiment consisting of two-tiered HESO trading among 67 households in Singapore. The results revealed decisive implications for both environmental policymakers and HESO suppliers. Policymakers are suggested to launch HESO in countries or regions with stable and relatively high electricity prices and low discount rates. HESO suppliers may choose to adjust rewards and duration accordingly when the market price deviates from the zero-profit equilibrium price of HESO. The valuation strategy of HESO also helps quantitative estimation of households’ perceived value of HESO. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Construction projects are known to be complex, due to being subject to uncertainty and variability. The use of buffers to protect them from the detrimental impact of variability has been well-researched. A key managerial choice is not whether or not to buffer variability, but rather how to define the necessary combination of buffers. Slack is a concept related to buffers but has been used in the literature to describe a broader range of strategies for coping with complexity. It allows an organisation to adapt to internal pressures for adjustment or to external pressures for change in policy. This paper aims to further develop the concept of slack and to unveil its relationships with other concepts and ideas that are partly overlapping such as buffers, resilience, robustness, flexibility, and redundancy. A concept map was devised in order to articulate the nature of the slack concept. Construction projects are exposed to a wide diversity of variabilities, which suggests the existence of a correspondent wide diversity of variability coping mechanisms, whether they are designed or not. This wide diversity is not properly accounted for by the concept of buffer, as it neglects the social and informal dimensions of coping with variability. The use of the concept of slack is proposed as an alternative. A companion IGLC 29 paper defines slack and discusses its relationships with proxy concepts such as flexibility and resilience. This paper presents nine practical examples of slack in managerial processes and topics that are of interest for the lean construction community. These examples suggest that, while slack has been concealed by the lack of theorization and consistent terminology, it is ubiquitous in lean construction. Discrete Element Modelling (DEM) is a virtual testing method that enables multiscale studies on granular materials. DEM provides a well-controlled testing environment, which enables precise systematic evaluation of the factors influencing the bulk response. The current study focuses on the behaviour of cohesionless backfills while a passive state of stress is simulated (i.e. rigid retaining wall translates toward backfill). Though particle-scale properties (e.g. size, shape and cohesion) play an important role on the macro response, the main objective in this study is to highlight the extent by which boundary conditions are important. Thus, identical dense packings are subject to the following boundary conditions: smooth/rough retaining wall and smooth/rough/periodic sidewalls (necessary for maintaining plain-strain conditions). Based on the DEM results, the failure surface geometries, wall pressure distribution and dilative response of the specimens are evaluated. It is seen that a curvilinear slip surface, similar to that observed in experiments, is only obtained once a rough retaining wall and periodic sidewalls are available. The overall observations suggest that the mobilisation of the passive state of stress, for a cohesionless granular assembly, is highly sensitive to the considered various boundary conditions. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences.

To minimize manganese loss during acid leaching and to enhance the lithium adsorption capacity of H1.33Mn1.67O4 from shale gas wastewater, this adsorbent material was doped with metallic elements in this study. Doping was achieved using solid-phase synthesis, resulting in Li1.33RXMn1.67−XO4 (R = Fe, Ni, Al) powder through high-temperature calcination. Then, lithium was leached out under acidic environment to obtain H1.33RXMn1.67−XO4 (HMO-R) adsorbents. The equilibrium adsorption capacities of HMO-R powders were measured as 20.7 mg/g, 20.7 mg/g, and 29.0 mg/g, for Fe, Ni, and Al dopants, respectively, surpassing that of the former H1.33Mn1.67O4 (13.7 mg/L). Moreover, an average reduction of manganese loss by 30% for HMO-R was observed during lithium recovery/extraction by acid leaching compared to undoped Li1.33Mn1.67O4. Overall, the doped adsorbent exhibited a stable crystal structure and high adsorption capacity, enhanced stability, performance, and efficiency in cycling experiments with respect to the undoped material. © 2024, The Authors.
