Cybersecurity threats are growing, making network intrusion detection essential. Traditional machine learning models remain effective in resource-limited environments due to their efficiency, requiring fewer parameters and less computational time. However, handling short and highly imbalanced datasets remains challenging. In this study, we propose the fusion of Contrastive Attentive Graph Network and Graph Attention Network (CAGN-GAT Fusion), and benchmark it against 15 other models, including both Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) and traditional ML models. Our evaluation is conducted on four benchmark datasets (KDD-CUP-1999, NSL-KDD, UNSW-NB15, and CICIDS2017) using a short and proportionally imbalanced dataset with a constant size of 5000 samples to ensure fairness in comparison. Results show that CAGN-GAT Fusion demonstrates stable and competitive accuracy, recall, and F1-score, even though it does not achieve the highest performance in every dataset. Our analysis also highlights the impact of adaptive graph construction techniques, including small changes in connections (edge perturbation) and selective hiding of features (feature masking), improving detection performance. The findings confirm that GNNs, particularly CAGN-GAT Fusion, are robust and computationally efficient, making them well-suited for resource-constrained environments. Future work will explore GraphSAGE layers and multiview graph construction techniques to further enhance adaptability and detection accuracy. © 2025, CC BY.

The rapid advancement of immersive technologies has propelled the development of the Metaverse, where the convergence of virtual and physical realities necessitates the generation of high-quality, photorealistic images to enhance user experience. However, generating these images, especially through Generative Diffusion Models (GDMs), in mobile edge computing environments presents significant challenges due to the limited computing resources of edge devices and the dynamic nature of wireless networks. This paper proposes a novel framework that integrates contract-inspired contest theory, Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), and GDMs to optimize image generation in these resource-constrained environments. The framework addresses the critical challenges of resource allocation and semantic data transmission quality by incentivizing edge devices to efficiently transmit high-quality semantic data, which is essential for creating realistic and immersive images. The use of contest and contract theory ensures that edge devices are motivated to allocate resources effectively, while DRL dynamically adjusts to network conditions, optimizing the overall image generation process. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach not only improves the quality of generated images but also achieves superior convergence speed and stability compared to traditional methods. This makes the framework particularly effective for optimizing complex resource allocation tasks in mobile edge Metaverse applications, offering enhanced performance and efficiency in creating immersive virtual environments. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Distinct selectivity to the spin angular momenta of photons has garnered significant attention in recent years, for its relevance in basic science and for imaging and sensing applications. While nonlocal metasurfaces with strong chiral responses to the incident light have been reported, these responses are typically limited to a narrow range of incident angles. In this study, we demonstrate a nonlocal metasurface that showcases strong chirality, characterized by circular dichroism (∼0.6), over a wide range of incident angles ±5°. Its quality factor, circular dichroism and resonant frequency can be optimized by design. These findings pave the way to further advance the development of valley-selective optical cavities and augmented reality applications.

Effective Dimension Aware Fractional-Order Stochastic Gradient Descent for Convex Optimization Problems

Fractional-order stochastic gradient descent (FOSGD) leverages a fractional exponent to capture long-memory effects in optimization, yet its practical impact is often constrained by the difficulty of tuning and stabilizing this exponent. In this work, we introduce 2SED Fractional-Order Stochastic Gradient Descent (2SEDFOSGD), a novel method that synergistically combines the Two-Scale Effective Dimension (2SED) algorithm with FOSGD to automatically calibrate the fractional exponent in a data-driven manner. By continuously gauging model sensitivity and effective dimensionality, 2SED dynamically adjusts the exponent to curb erratic oscillations and enhance convergence rates. Theoretically, we demonstrate how this dimension-aware adaptation retains the benefits of fractional memory while averting the sluggish or unstable behaviors frequently observed in naive fractional SGD. Empirical evaluations across multiple benchmarks confirm that our 2SED-driven fractional exponent approach not only converges faster but also achieves more robust final performance, suggesting broad applicability for fractional-order methodologies in large-scale machine learning and related domains. © 2025, CC BY.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is regarded as one key enabler in the future sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication network. While considerable attention has been paid to radio-frequency (RF)-ISAC, optical wireless (OW)-ISAC is also rapidly developing as a powerful complement to its RF counterpart. In this paper, an enhanced asymmetrically clipped direct-current-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (EADO-OFDM) scheme is proposed for flexible waveform design and resource allocation in OW-ISAC. A generalized OW-ISAC framework is first established to describe the working principles of both communication and sensing (C&S). Then, the signal model is introduced for EADO-OFDM, where the Price theorem is adopted to model the colored clipping noise and elicit a generalized frequency-selective channel. In addition, a joint optimization problem of resource allocation for EADO-OFDM is formulated to adaptively balance C&S performance metrics, and the solution to the problem is obtained by the block coordinate descent algorithm. Finally, extensive numerical simulations demonstrate the flexibility of the proposed EADO-OFDM scheme, while the C&S trade-off is also revealed during the resource allocation. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Optical wireless integrated sensing and communication (OW-ISAC) is emerging as a crucial technology to complement and augment its radio-frequency counterpart. In this paper, we propose an optical phased array (OPA)-based OW-ISAC framework to enable concurrent multi-user communication and environment imaging. The optical beamforming and atmospheric propagation are first elaborated to introduce the principles of OPA-based OW-ISAC. In addition, the investigation into the multi-beam property, direct detection scheme, and sensing task of imaging for OW-ISAC yields dedicated signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio and contrast metrics for communication and sensing sub-systems, respectively. Moreover, the precoding matrices and photodiode orientations are jointly optimized to achieve optimal beamforming. Subsequently, numerical simulations illustrate the relationships between communication and sensing performance metrics. Furthermore, the proposed OW-ISAC scheme is substantiated in a realistic scenario with the optimized beamforming. The demonstrated high-precision sensing and reliable communication capabilities of OPA-based OW-ISAC can serve plentiful future applications in the era of connection and intelligence. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

EEG and fMRI are complementary, noninvasive technologies for investigating human brain function. These modalities have been used to uncover large-scale functional networks and their disruptions in clinical populations. Given the high temporal resolution of EEG and high spatial resolution of fMRI, integrating these modalities can provide a more holistic understanding of brain activity. This work explores a multimodal source decomposition technique for extracting shared modes of temporal variation between fMRI BOLD signals and EEG spectral power fluctuations in the resting state. The resulting components are then compared between patients with focal epilepsy and controls, revealing multimodal network differences between groups.

The recent proliferation of hyper-realistic deepfake videos has drawn attention to the threat of audio and visual forgeries. Most previous studies on detecting artificial intelligence-generated fake videos only utilize visual modality or audio modality. While some methods exploit audio and visual modalities to detect forged videos, they have not been comprehensively evaluated on multimodal datasets of deepfake videos involving acoustic and visual manipulations, and are mostly based on convolutional neural networks with low detection accuracy. Considering that human cognition instinctively integrates multisensory information including audio and visual cues to perceive and interpret content and the success of transformer in various fields, this study introduces the audio-visual transformer-based ensemble network (AVTENet). This innovative framework tackles the complexities of deepfake technology by integrating both acoustic and visual manipulations to enhance the accuracy of video forgery detection. Specifically, the proposed model integrates several purely transformer-based variants that capture video, audio, and audio-visual salient cues to reach a consensus in prediction. For evaluation, we use the recently released benchmark multimodal audio-video FakeAVCeleb dataset. For a detailed analysis, we evaluate AVTENet, its variants, and several existing methods on multiple test sets of the FakeAVCeleb dataset. Experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms all existing methods and achieves state-of-the-art performance on Testset-I and Testset-II of the FakeAVCeleb dataset. We also compare AVTENet against humans in detecting video forgery. The results show that AVTENet significantly outperforms humans. © 2016 IEEE.

In this paper, a new single-phase five-level boosting inverter with reduced components and simple control technique is presented, suitable for renewable energy systems and electric vehicle (EV) applications. Powered through a DC voltage source, the proposed five-level inverter comprises eight power semiconductor switches and one capacitor. Moreover, only five independent control signals are required to attain double voltage boosting. The maximum voltage stresses of 6/8 switches are also similar as the input voltage. Moreover, alternating operation in the capacitor discharging and charging states ensures self-voltage balancing with small ripple. The topology and operation principles are analyzed in detail, as well as numerous simulation results with different operating conditions of the proposed inverter are provided and discussed for thorough verification.
