Wheelchair basketball for people with disabilities is a niche market with limited attention and resources due to its smaller scale. We utilize the characteristics of VR technology, combining wearable devices with physical wheelchair seating, to create a virtual and real interactive game of wheelchair basketball. This enables people with disabilities to exercise at home and allows the general public to experience the challenges of disability sports, fostering empathy and emphasizing the importance of social justice. © 2024 IEEE.

This article proposes an intelligent platform for monitoring students' steps on their way to school until they leave the school to their homes. This platform can identify students and notify those responsible and competent authorities in various situations of school life, such as: entering and leaving the school bus, entering and leaving school, entering the school cafeteria, etc. The first application aims to control access to the school bus through facial recognition. In the tests carried out, the recognition system achieved excellent results in all metrics. © 2023 IEEE.

Hyper-Heuristics are high-level methodologies developed to select or generate heuristics for solving complex problems. Despite their success, there is a lack of multi-objective hyper-heuristics. In the multi-objective optimization context, MOEA/D decomposes a problem into a number of sub problems handled by individuals in a collaborative manner. Our approach, named MOEA/D-HH SW , expands the MOEA/D framework with a multi-objective selection hyper-heuristic. It uses the proposed adaptive choice function with sliding window to determine which low-level heuristic (differential evolution operators) should be applied by each individual during MOEA/D execution. The proposed approach is tested in three known instances of the multi-objective environmental/economic dispatch problem, formulated as a non-linear constrained optimization problem with competing and non-commensurable objectives. MOEA/D-HH SW outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms reported in the literature for all considered instances.

Electric, water, gas and transportation utilities face severe challenges associated with security, quality, availability, reliability and profitability issues. They must solve interrelated system problems with respect to generation of electricity, transportation of fuel, and potable as well as waste water. In the future, engineers and managers of utilities must be well versed in the different disciplines of engineering including electrical civil, mechanical and information technology. The University of Colorado at Boulder addresses this educational opportunity by proposing a novel Integrated Utilities Management program for M.S. candidates who have a solid B.S. background or equivalent in a related discipline. The M.S. program will consist of four interdisciplinary paths dealing with business management and legal topics as they relate to federal and state regulatory issues, as well as agency and people-related leadership issues. The electric utilities option of this program will be centered on three core courses related to electric power generation/transmission and distribution, security and availability, quality and reliability, economics and environmental policy, and utility finance;two elective courses from a group of courses that address nuclear power, waste water, solid waste, telecommunications, renewable energies, data communication, fuels and case studies;and one capstone course consisting of either operations research or the investigation and resolution of a pending utility project such as the right-of-way of transmission lines, specification of new power plants, retrofitting of power plants or their impact on the environment. It is expected that candidates for this MS program will come from universities, from utilities, and from private and public agencies. The MS program can be completed by full- or part time students within one or two years of intensive study, respectively. Hypertension is a noncommunicable disease (NCD) that causes global concern, high costs and a high number of deaths. Internet of Things, Ubiquitous Computing, and Cloud Computing enable the development of systems for remote and real-time monitoring of patients affected with NCDs like hypertension. This paper reports on a system for monitoring hypertension patients that was built by employing these techniques. This system allows the vital signs of a patient (blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature) to be captured via sensors built in a wearable device similar to a wristwatch. These signals are transmitted to the patient's mobile device for processing, and the generated clinical data are sent to the cloud to be properly presented and analysed by the health professionals responsible for the patient. To deal with semantic interoperability issues that arise when multiple different devices and system components must interoperate, a semantic model was conceived for this system in terms of ontologies for diseases and devices. This paper also presents the semantic module that we developed and implemented in the cloud to perform reasoning based on this model, demonstrating the potential benefits of incorporating semantic technologies in our system. The rapid advancement of computer-generated holography has bridged deep learning with traditional optical principles in recent ***,a critical challenge in this evolution is the efficient and accurate conversion from the amplitude to phase domain for high-quality phase-only hologram(POH)*** computational models often struggle to address the inherent complexities of optical phenomena,compromising the conversion *** this study,we present the cross-domain fusion network(CDFN),an architecture designed to tackle the complexities involved in POH *** CDFN employs a multi-stage(MS)mechanism to progressively learn the translation from amplitude to phase domain,complemented by the deep supervision(DS)strategy of middle features to enhance task-relevant feature learning from the initial ***,we propose an infinite phase mapper(IPM),a phase-mapping function that circumvents the limitations of conventional activation functions and encapsulates the physical essence of *** simulations,our proposed method successfully reconstructs high-quality 2K color images from the DIV2K dataset,achieving an average PSNR of 31.68 dB and SSIM of ***,we realize high-quality color image reconstruction in optical *** experimental results highlight the computational intelligence and optical fidelity achieved by our proposed physics-aware cross-domain fusion.

This paper presents input impedance and performance analysis of a series-fed 2×1 patch array antenna operating at 9.55 GHz. Effects of substrate's dielectric constant and height are discussed. Input impedance is optimized step by step from a single patch to a 2×1 array. Low impedance patches provide higher gain at the cost of increased capacitive coupling between the elements. Consequently, input impedance at the operating frequency is affected by the higher resonant mode. Finally, a technique to mitigate the coupling between the patches is proposed. With the proposed technique, the higher resonant mode can be eliminated so that the 2×1 array can easily be matched and operates with the correct patch array mode. © 2022 IEEE.

Ochratoxin-A[7-(L-β-phenylalanylcarbonyl)-carboxyl-5-chloro-8-hydroxy-3,4-dihydro-3R-methyl-isocumarin, OTA] is a common food contaminant mycotoxin that enters the human body through the consumption of improperly stored food products. Upon ingestion, it leads to immuno-suppression and immuno-toxicity. OTA has been known to produce nephrotoxic, teratogenic, and carcinogenic activity (via oxidative DNA damage) in several species. This review introduces potentials of electrochemical biosensor to provide breakthroughs in OTA detection through improved selectivity and sensitivity and also the current approaches for detecting OTA in food products.

Stabilization of hydroxyl-terminated silanes in porous silicon for in-situ DNA synthesis

Passivation of porous silicon sensors is a critical issue for achieving high sensitivity and selectivity toward biomolecule targets that may be detected in complex physiologic solution. Without appropriate passivation, degradation of the porous silicon matrix inhibits the repeatability of optical measurements and limits applications in complex media. In this work, we present a method for stabilizing TEOS-HBA monolayers in porous silicon. Annealing of the silane at 200°C for 16 hours, followed by a deionized water wash for a minimum of one hour, results in a porous silicon surface that is highly stable in a number of solvents. Annealing improves cross-linking of surface-attached silane molecules for added stability, and hydrolyzing facilitates removal of weakly bound multilayers. This surface treatment procedure is of considerable interest in applications such as DNA synthesis where hydroxyl functionality is critical and a thick silane surface coating is not desired. © 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
