As spin caloritronic measurements become increasingly common techniques for characterizing material properties, it is important to quantify potentially confounding effects. We report measurements of the Nernst-Ettingshausen response from room temperature to 5 K in thin film wires of Pt and W, metals commonly used as inverse spin Hall detectors in spin Seebeck characterization. Johnson-Nyquist noise thermometry is used to assess the temperature change of the metals with heater power at low temperatures, and the thermal path is analyzed via finite-element modeling. The Nernst-Ettingshausen response of W is found to be approximately temperature-independent, while the response of Pt increases at low temperatures. These results are discussed in the context of theoretical expectations and the possible role of magnetic impurities in Pt. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Foreign Exchange market is the world's largest daily currency turnover. Two of the popular currencies Euro and Pound sterling traded against the US Dollar. Since the Russia and Ukraine war started in February 2022, their exchange rates decrease to the lowest rate ever. Even though the general trend is bearish, several daily candles increase for some days making challenges for forex analysts. To solve this problem, classification is applied. The data is labeled downward and upward. By utilizing Linear Kernel and Radial Basis Function (RBF) Kernel-based Support Vector Machines (SVM), the candle direction can be classified and optimized by tuning the Hyperparameters. The accuracy of candle direction classifications are highly improved. After tuning, in general, classification using Linear Models can outperform RBF Models. The best accuracy found on the Pound sterling against US Dollar by using the Linear model is 98.11% and the accuracy becomes 100% on data testing at a ratio of 70:30. Whilst for the Euro against the US Dollar, the best accuracy found the same for both Linear and RBF models on a ratio of 80:20 at 97.53%. However, on data testing, it decreases to 94.51% for Linear Model and 93.41% using RBF Model. The implication of this study is SVM can successfully classify candle direction on pairs in the Forex Market that are affected by a big event that comes for such a long period as long as the hyperparameter is tuned.

Manual oropharyngeal (OP) swab sampling is an intensive and risky task. In this article, a novel OP swab sampling device of low cost and high compliance is designed by combining the visuotactile sensor and the pneumatic actuator-based gripper. Here, a concave visuotactile sensor called CoTac is first proposed to address the problems of high cost and poor reliability of traditional multi-axis force sensors. Besides, by imitating the doctor's fingers, a soft pneumatic actuator with a rigid skeleton structure is designed, which is demonstrated to be reliable and safe via finite element modeling and experiments. Furthermore, we propose a sampling method that adopts a compliant control algorithm based on the adaptive virtual force to enhance the safety and compliance of the swab sampling process. The effectiveness of the device has been verified through sampling experiments as well as in vivo tests, indicating great application potential. The cost of the device is around 30 US dollars and the total weight of the functional part is less than 0.1 kg, allowing the device to be rapidly deployed on various robotic arms.

The fabrication of InGaN-based blue 4✕4 array micro-LEDs (μLEDs) with 40 μm ✕40 μm chip size and 2✕2 array μLEDs with 80 μm ✕80 μm chip size etching by the inductive coupled plasma reactive ion etching (ICPRIE) and defect-free neutral beam etching (NBE) processes was studied in this work. In μLEDs of this size, the influence of defects formation in the sidewalls on EQE was evaluated. There was almost no difference in EQE between μLEDs array etched by the NBE process no matter 40 μm ✕40 μm and 80 μm ✕80 μm, but the dependence was observed in the ICPRIE. Even with this size, it was found that the size effect of EQE is smaller than that in case of using ICPRIE for defect-free neutral beam etching. This impact is substantial since μLED predominantly operated at low current density, around 1–5 A/cm2. Consequently, the reduction of defect density, encompassing both internal and sidewall defects, becomes imperative even in 40–80 μm InGaN-based μLEDs. This not only improves the overall efficiency of μLEDs but also fortifies the brightness stability of μLED displays if process etching by NBE. It was also found that the etching shape had an influence on EQE. It could be attributed to fact that the etching profile angle of NBE was more vertical than that of ICPRIE. Because the different angles of the mesa resulted in different light intensity. The μLEDs emitting with a wavelength of 450 nm, the light extraction efficiency and intensity at a mesa angle 58° of NBE etching μLEDs was about 8% lower than those of an angle (38°) of ICPRIE etching μLEDs by simulation. © The Authors

The use of UAVs has grown in recent years, leading to the prominence of various applications such as monitoring and inspection, search and rescue operations, dam and civil structure inspection, military applications, among others. One of the most relevant applications today is related to Precision Agriculture, which is the subject of this work. Our study analyzes the behavior of an Unmanned Autonomous Vehicle (UAV) used for spraying tasks. The variation of the payload is measured through a load sensor. This information indicates to the UAV the right time to return to the base for refueling or completion of the application. Experimental validation is carried out to assess the functionality of the payload sensor during flight operations. In addition, the dynamic compensation controller improves the navigation of the UAV, even in the presence of payload variations during the entire mission duration.

Infrared few-shot object detection (IFSOD) aims to detect infrared objects with limited labeled examples. Current infrared datasets, however, suffer from limited diversity in object types and classes, hindering robust evaluation of model generalization on novel classes. To systematically assess dataset quality, we propose metrics for class diversity, instance variability, and object density. By integrating three widely used infrared datasets, we construct the first dataset specifically tailored for IFSOD, increasing instance density to 4.8 (a 1.1 improvement) and expanding the number of classes to 18 (a 5-class increase) compared to the source datasets. Furthermore, frequency analysis of spatial features reveals that sparse annotations introduce spectral bias in the frequency domain. Directly transforming spatial features to the frequency domain, however, mixes background noise with object features, causing spectral leakage and impairing the learning of discriminative features for novel classes. To address these issues, we propose the frequency compression few-shot detection (FC-fsd) method, which incorporates a frequency compression (FC) module. The FC module leverages Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) within localized windows to reduce spectral leakage and enhance feature clarity. With minimal additional computational overhead, FC-fsd significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods, achieving nAP50 scores of 28.57 (+13.37) and 35.63 (+2.59) in 1-shot and 2-shot settings, respectively. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is regarded as a key enabler in the upcoming era of connectivity and intelligence, where the optical spectrum emerges as a promising candidate for ISAC. This paper presents an optical wireless (OW)-ISAC scheme based on asymmetrically clipped direct-current-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ADO-OFDM). The Bussgang theorem is adopted to model the clipped OFDM signal and analyze the clipping noise. In addition, the adaptive resource allocation for ADO-OFDM is formulated as a joint optimization problem, which is decomposed into two sub-problems for DC-biased optical (DCO)asymmetrically clipped optical (ACO) power distribution and subcarrier power allocation. Then, the optimal resource allocation can be achieved by iteratively solving these sub-problems. Consequently, numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed ADO-OFDM scheme and reveal the trade-off between communication and sensing functionalities in OW-ISAC.

Fast Data-independent KLT Approximations Based on Integer Functions

The Karhunen-Loève transform (KLT) stands as a well-established discrete transform, demonstrating optimal characteristics in data decorrelation and dimensionality reduction. Its ability to condense energy compression into a select few main components has rendered it instrumental in various applications within image compression frameworks. However, computing the KLT depends on the covariance matrix of the input data, which makes it difficult to develop fast algorithms for its implementation. Approximations for the KLT, utilizing specific rounding functions, have been introduced to reduce its computational complexity. Therefore, our paper introduces a category of low-complexity, data-independent KLT approximations, employing a range of round-off functions. The design methodology of the approximate transform is defined for any block-length N, but emphasis is given to transforms of N = 8 due to its wide use in image and video compression. The proposed transforms perform well when compared to the exact KLT and approximations considering classical performance measures. For particular scenarios, our proposed transforms demonstrated superior performance when compared to KLT approximations documented in the literature. We also developed fast algorithms for the proposed transforms, further reducing the arithmetic cost associated with their implementation. Evaluation of field programmable gate array (FPGA) hardware implementation metrics was conducted. Practical applications in image encoding showed the relevance of the proposed transforms. In fact, we showed that one of the proposed transforms outperformed the exact KLT given certain compression ratios. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper presents state of the art methods for addressing three important challenges in automated fake news detection: fake news detection, domain identification, and bot identification in tweets. The proposed solutions achieved first place in a recent international competition on fake news. For fake news detection, we present two models. The winning model in the competition combines similarity between the embedding of each article's title and the embedding of the top five corresponding google search results. The new model relies on advances in Natural Language Understanding (NLU) end to end deep learning models to identify stylistic differences between legitimate and fake news articles. This second model was developed after the competition and outperforms the winning approach. For news domain detection, the winning model is a hybrid approach composed of named entity features concatenated with semantic embeddings derived from end to end models. For twitter bot detection, we propose to use the following features: duration between account creation and tweet date, presence of a tweet's link, presence of user's location, other tweet's features, and the tweets' metadata. Experiments include insights into the importance of the different features and the results indicate the superior performances of all proposed models. © 2020 IEEE.
