A survey on cross-user federated recommendation

Recommender systems are effective in mitigating information overload, yet the centralized storage of user data raises significant privacy concerns. Cross-user federated recommendation(CUFR) provides a promising distributed paradigm to address these concerns by enabling privacy-preserving recommendations directly on user devices. In this survey, we review and categorize current progress in CUFR, focusing on four key aspects: privacy, security, accuracy, and efficiency. Firstly,we conduct an in-depth privacy analysis, discuss various cases of privacy leakage, and then review recent methods for privacy protection. Secondly, we analyze security concerns and review recent methods for untargeted and targeted *** untargeted attack methods, we categorize them into data poisoning attack methods and parameter poisoning attack methods. For targeted attack methods, we categorize them into user-based methods and item-based methods. Thirdly,we provide an overview of the federated variants of some representative methods, and then review the recent methods for improving accuracy from two categories: data heterogeneity and high-order information. Fourthly, we review recent methods for improving training efficiency from two categories: client sampling and model compression. Finally, we conclude this survey and explore some potential future research topics in CUFR.

The worldwide impact of COVID-19 necessitates accurate forecasting for informed decision-making by governments and health entities. This study proposes neural network architectures for time series forecasting of confirmed COVID-19 cases based on historical data. The models, including variants of LSTM networks, CNN-GRU hybrids, RBMs, DBNs, and self-attention mechanisms, are trained on comprehensive datasets of confirmed cases, deaths, recoveries, and other variables across various countries. Comparative analysis indicates that CNN-GRU and LSTM models exhibit superior performance in forecasting accuracy, surpassing RBM, DBN, and self-attention models across metrics like Mean Absolute Error and Root Mean Squared Error. This research emphasizes the viability of employing advanced neural networks for precise COVID-19 spread predictions, pivotal in shaping public health policies during global crises. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2025.

In modern industrial cyber-physical systems, a mass of process variables has been obtained by the high-sampling online sensors. Meanwhile, the key quality indexes are usually obtained infrequently from the laboratory. Hence, these quality variables are with low sampling rate. To avail of the complete process and quality variables with various sampling rates in the dynamic processes, a set of semi-supervised dynamic latent variable models are proposed for dynamic modeling and quality-relevant monitoring. The proposed models have built a unified structure to consider both the auto-correlations and cross-correlations between the process and quality variables with unbalanced sampling sizes. Hence, the feature extraction of the time series data is dynamically adjusted under the guidance of the quality variables. Then, the quality-relevant monitoring schemes are proposed, which is validated by a numerical case and an actual wastewater treatment process. © 2024 IEEE. All rights reserved.

As one of the most critical tasks currently, it is essential to excavate the status update performance. In this paper, we combine access control and pilot design to minimize average age of information (AoI) in cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with grant-free (GF) random access, where the positions of both the access points (APs) and machine-type communication devices (MTCDs) are geographically distributed as independent Poisson point processes (PPPs). Based on the establish two-disk computation model, we frist formulate the access successful probability by leveraging the stochastic geometry for GF transmission. Then, the closed-form expression of the average AoI is approximately derived. The derived results enable us precisely quantify the impact of network parameters on the system-level performance. To minimize the average AoI, a joint access control and pilot design scheme is proposed. Finally, simulation results are provided to furnish invaluable insight into system performance and certificate the validity of the proposed algorithm. © 2014 IEEE.

This work presents an adaptive tracking guidance method for robotic fishes. The scheme enables robots to suppress external interference and eliminate motion jitter. An adaptive integral surge line-of-sight guidance rule is designed to eliminate dynamics interference and sideslip issues. Limited-time yaw and surge speed observers are reported to fit disturbance variables in the model. The approximation values can compensate for the system's control input and improve the robots' tracking ***, this work develops a terminal sliding mode controller and third-order differential processor to determine the rotational torque and reduce the robots' run jitter. Then, Lyapunov's theory proves the uniform ultimate boundedness of the proposed method. Simulation and physical experiments confirm that the technology improves the tracking error convergence speed and stability of robotic fishes.

This article presents a new optical integrated sensing and communication (O-ISAC) framework tailored for cost-effective light-emitting diode (LED) for enhanced internet of Things (IoT) applications. Unlike prior research on ISAC, which predominantly focused on radio frequency (RF) band, O-ISAC capitalizes on the inherent advantages of the optical spectrum, including the ultrawide license-free bandwidth, immunity to RF interference, and energy efficiency—attributes crucial for IoT communications. The communication and sensing in our O-ISAC system unfold in two phases: 1) directionless O-ISAC and 2) directional O-ISAC. In the first phase, distributed optical access points emit nondirectional light for communication and leverage small-aperture imaging principles for sensing. In the second phase, we put forth the concept of optical beamforming, using collimating lenses to concentrate light, resulting in substantial performance enhancements in both communication and sensing. Numerical and simulation results demonstrate the feasibility and impressive performance of O-ISAC benchmarked against optical separate communication and sensing systems. © 2014 IEEE.

Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications have emerged as an indispensable component of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), fostering innovations that enhance road safety and traffic efficiency. Within this transformative landscape, vehicle platooning has been identified by the Cellular-V2X (C-V2X) standards as an advanced V2X use case with the potential to reshape the future of ITS. However, the stringent requirements of such applications necessitate an optimized spectrum efficiency. Consequently, Radio Resource Allocation (RRA) has emerged as a critical and central component in addressing this challenge. This paper provides a comprehensive examination of RRA tailored specifically to the context of vehicle platooning. It presents an overview of fundamental concepts, including V2X communications, vehicle platooning, and RRA standards, which is followed by an in-depth review of the state-of-the-art, categorized based on the underlying communication technologies, RRA modes, and coverage conditions. By analyzing the existing literature, this paper identifies several key research challenges and potential opportunities, offering insightful guidance for shaping future research in this field. © 1998-2012 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel Hierarchical Transfer and Multi-task Learning (HTMTL) approach designed to substantially improve the performance of scene classification networks by leveraging the collective influence of diverse scene types. HTMTL is distinguished by its ability to capture the interaction between various scene types, recognizing how context information from one scene category can enhance the classification performance of another. Our method, when applied to the Places365 dataset, demonstrates a significant improvement in the network’s ability to accurately identify scene types. By exploiting these inter-scene interactions, HTMTL significantly enhances scene classification performance, making it a potent tool for advancing scene understanding and classification. Additionally, this study explores the contribution of individual tasks and task groupings on the performance of other tasks. To further validate the generality of HTMTL, we applied it to the Cityscapes dataset, where the results also show promise. This indicates the broad applicability and effectiveness of our approach across different datasets and scene types. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
