With the ever-increasing amount of data on the Web available at SPARQL endpoints [1] the need for an integrated and transparent way of accessing the data has arisen. It is highly desirable to have a way of asking SPARQL queries that make use of data residing in disparate data sources served by multiple SPARQL endpoints. We aim at providing such a capability and thus enabling an integrated way of querying the whole Semantic Web at a time.

Until relatively recently the vast majority of imaging and electrophysiological studies of human brain activity have relied on single-modality measurements usually correlated with readily observable or experimentally modified behavioural or brain state patterns. Multi-modal imaging is the concept of bringing together observations or measurements from different instruments. We discuss the aims of multi-modal imaging and the ways in which it can be accomplished using representative applications. Given the importance of haemodynamic and electrophysiological signals in current multi-modal imaging applications, we also review some of the basic physiology relevant to understanding their relationship. In the last years several drafts, recommendations and concepts for a graphical notation for Topic Maps have been published, but till today no graphical notation is generally approved and used in the Topic Maps community. In this paper we present GTMalpha as a conceptual new notation for a graphical representation of Topic Maps. Our objective is, to provide a practical usable notation, which allows a complete, consistent as well as easy to use graphical representation of any given topic map draft. GTMalpha provides a domain as well as a subject centric view and most important it considers the unique characteristics of the Topic Maps paradigm. This paper serves as a user oriented GTMalpha manual for ontology designers, domain experts as well as users.

Despite the significant research over the last ten years, commercial ubiquitous computing environments and pervasive applications remain thin on the ground. This paper looks at the explosion in application creativity on the internet in recent years - the so-called web 2.0' - in order to identify the obstacles to application creativity in ubiquitous computing. Although technological and standardisation advances are progressively diminishing the scale of the technical problems in the domain, how to manage such applications in such a way so as to encourage user-acceptance remains an open question. It is a question that is particularly difficult due to the serious privacy concerns and the need for negotiated management of services between users due to physically embedded nature of sensor-driven applications. We describe a technical platform which is designed to allow users of ubiquitous computing environments to manage their own personal data and share it in a controlled way and describe an experimental programme to measure the relationship between users' perception of how much control they can exercise over their personal data and their acceptance of ubiquitous computing applications. A number of multi-objective genetic algorithms (MOGAs) have been developed to obtain Pareto optimal solutions for multi-objective optimization problems. However, as these methods involve probabilistic algorithms, there is no guarantee that the global search will be conducted in the design variable space. In such cases, there are unsearched areas in the design variable space, and the obtained Pareto solutions may not be truly optimal. In this paper, we propose an optimization method called NSDIRECT-GA to conduct a global search over the design variable space as much as possible, which improves the reliability of the obtained Pareto solutions. The effectiveness of NSDIRECT-GA was examined through numerical experiments. NSDIRECT-GA can obtain not only Pareto solutions, but also grasp the landscape of the search space, which results in higher reliability of the obtained solutions compared to MOGAs.

A clonal selection based memetic algorithm is proposed for solving job shop scheduling problems in this paper. In the proposed algorithm, the clonal selection and the local search mechanism are designed to enhance exploration and exploitation. In the clonal selection mechanism, clonal selection, hypermutation and receptor edit theories are presented to construct an evolutionary searching mechanism which is used for exploration. In the local search mechanism, a simulated annealing local search algorithm based on Nowicki and Smutnicki＇s neighborhood is presented to exploit local optima. The proposed algorithm is examined using some well-known benchmark problems. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

As the number of non-English documents is increasing dramatically on the web nowadays, the study and design of information retrieval systems for these languages is very important. The Persian language is the official language of Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan and is also spoken in some other countries in the Middle East, so there are significant amount of Persian documents available on the web. In this study, we will present and compare our English-Persian cross language text retrieval experiments on Hamshahri text collection. Also, we will present Combinatorial Translation Probability (CTP) calculation method for query translation that estimates translation probabilities based on the collection itself. Annotated data play an important role in enhancing the usability of information resources. Single users can be easily frustrated by the task of annotating. Collaborative approaches to annotation have been applied to web resources, but have not yet been applied to the task of local documents, due in part to the lack of a uniform identification method. In this paper, we use hash-based virtual URIs for identifying documents, and introduce the concept of a STAN (Social, Trusted Annotation Network), which enables collaborative annotation of documents through their URIs. STAN also incorporates quantitative trust rates between users in social networks based on their interactions with each other. The STAN framework is described, demonstrating how these trust networks are constructed through collaborative annotation. Finally, we evaluate the usefulness of collaborative annotation and the feasibility of the resulting trust rates through empirical experiment. © 2008 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

The E-commerce information on the Surface Web is supported by the Deep Web, which can not be accessed directly by the search engines or the web crawlers. The only way to access the backend database is through query interface. Extracting valid attributes from the query forms and automatic translating the source query into a target query is a solvable way for addressing the current limitations in accessing Deep Web data sources. To generate a valid query, we have to reconcile the key attributes and their semantic relation. We present our framework to solve the problem. To enrich the set of attributes contained in the semantic form, we use the WordNet as kinds of ontology technique and we try to find the semantic relation of the attributes in the same query from and different forms. Extensive experiments over real-word domains show the utility of our query translation framework. © 2008 IEEE.
