Recently, cloud radio access network (C-RAN) with caching as a service (CaaS) was proposed to merge the functionalities of communication, computing, and caching (CCC) together. In this paper, we dissect the interactions of CCC in C-RAN with CaaS from two dimensions: physical resource dimension and time dimension. In the physical resource dimension, we identify how to segment the baseband unit (BBU) pool resources (i.e., computation and storage) into different types of virtual machines (VMs). In the time dimension, we address how the long-term resource segmentation in the BBU pool impacts on the short-term transmit beamforming at the remote radio heads. We formulate the problem as a stochastic mixed-integer nonlinear programming (SMINLP) to minimize the system cost, including the server cost, VM cost and wireless transmission cost. After a series of approximation, including sample average approximation, successive convex approximation, and semidefinite relaxation, the SMINLP is approximated as a global consensus problem. The alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is utilized to obtain the solution in a parallel fashion. Simulation results verify the convergence of our proposed algorithm, and also confirm that the proposed scheme is more cost-saving than that without considering the integration of CCC. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Today’s popular tv series tend to develop continuous, complex plots spanning several seasons, but are often viewed in controlled and discontinuous conditions. Consequently, most viewers need to be re-immersed in the story before watching a new season. Although discussions with friends and family can help, we observe that most viewers make extensive use of summaries to re-engage with the plot. Automatic generation of video summaries of tv series’ complex stories requires, first, modeling the dynamics of the plot and, second, extracting relevant sequences. In this paper, we tackle plot modeling by considering the social network of interactions between the characters involved in the narrative: substantial, durable changes in a major character’s social environment suggest a new development relevant for the summary. Once identified, these major stages in each character’s storyline can be used as a basis for completing the summary with related sequences. Our algorithm combines such social network analysis with filmmaking grammar to automatically generate character-oriented video summaries of tv series from partially anno-tated data. We carry out evaluation with a user study in a real-world scenario: a large sample of viewers were asked to rank video summaries centered on five characters of the popular tv series Game of Thrones, a few weeks before the new, sixth season was released. Our results reveal the ability of character-oriented summaries to re-engage viewers in television series and confirm the contributions of modeling the plot content and exploiting stylistic patterns to identify salient sequences. The recent proliferation of smart devices has given rise to ubiquitous computing, an emerging computing paradigm which allows anytime & anywhere computing possible. In such a ubiquitous computing environment, customers release different computing or sensing tasks, and people, also known as data processors, participate in these tasks and get paid for providing their idle computing and communication resources. Thus, how to select an appropriate and reliable customer while not disclosing processors' privacy has become an interesting problem. In this article, we present a trust-based and privacy-preserving customer selection scheme in ubiquitous computing, called TPCS, to enable potential processors select the customers with good reputation. The basic concept of TPCS is that each data processor holds a trust value, and the reputation score of the customer is calculated based on processors' trust values and feedbacks via a truth discovery process. To preserve processors' privacy, pseudonyms and Paillier cryptosystem are applied to conceal each processor's real identity. In addition, three authentication protocols are designed to ensure that only the valid data processors (i.e., the processors registering in the system, holding the truthful trust values, and joining the computing tasks) can pass the authentication. A comprehensive security analysis is conducted to prove that our proposed TPCS scheme is secure and can defend against several sophisticated attacks. Derivational morphology is a fundamental and complex characteristic of language. In this paper we propose the new task of predicting the derivational form of a given base-form lemma that is appropriate for a given context. We present an encoder- decoder style neural network to produce a derived form character-by-character, based on its corresponding character-level representation of the base form and the context. We demonstrate that our model is able to generate valid context-sensitive derivations from known base forms, but is less accurate under a lexicon agnostic setting. © 2017 Association for Computational Linguistics.

The generation of complex derived word forms has been an overlooked problem in NLP;we fill this gap by applying neural sequence-to-sequence models to the task. We overview the theoretical motivation for a paradigmatic treatment of derivational morphology, and introduce the task of derivational paradigm completion as a parallel to inflectional paradigm completion. State-of-the-art neural models, adapted from the inflection task, are able to learn a range of derivation patterns, and outperform a non-neural baseline by 16.4%. However, due to semantic, historical, and lexical considerations involved in derivational morphology, future work will be needed to achieve performance parity with inflection-generating systems. © 2017 Association for Computational Linguistics.

The fields of music, health, and technology have seen significant interactions in recent years in developing music technology for health care and well-being. In an effort to strengthen the collaboration between the involved disciplines, the workshop “Music, computing, and Health” was held to discuss best practices and state-of-the-art at the intersection of these areas with researchers from music psychology and neuroscience, music therapy, music information retrieval, music technology, medical technology (medtech), and robotics. Following the discussions at the workshop, this article provides an overview of the different methods of the involved disciplines and their potential contributions to developing music technology for health and well-being. Furthermore, the article summarizes the state of the art in music technology that can be applied in various health scenarios and provides a perspective on challenges and opportunities for developing music technology that (1) supports person-centered care and evidence-based treatments, and (2) contributes to developing standardized, large-scale research on music-based interventions in an interdisciplinary manner. The article provides a resource for those seeking to engage in interdisciplinary research using music-based computational methods to develop technology for health care, and aims to inspire future research directions by evaluating the state of the art with respect to the challenges facing each field. © The Author(s) 2021.

Investigating the Effect of Music and Lyrics on Spoken-Word Recognition

Background music in social interaction settings can hinder conversation. Yet, little is known of how specific properties of music impact speech processing. This paper addresses this knowledge gap by investigating 1) whether the masking effect of background music with lyrics is larger than that of music without lyrics, and 2) whether the masking effect is larger for more complex music. To answer these questions, a word identification experiment was run in which Dutch participants listened to Dutch CVC words embedded in stretches of background music in two conditions, with and without lyrics, and at three SNRs. Three songs were used of different genres and complexities. Music stretches with and without lyrics were sampled from the same song in order to control for factors beyond the presence of lyrics. The results showed a clear negative impact of the presence of lyrics in background music on spoken-word recognition. This impact is independent of complexity. The results suggest that social spaces (e.g., restaurants, cafés and bars) should make careful choices of music to promote conversation, and open a path for future work. Research software has become a central asset in academic research. It optimizes existing and enables new research methods, implements and embeds research knowledge, and constitutes an essential research product in itself. Research software must be sustainable in order to understand, replicate, reproduce, and build upon existing research or conduct new research effectively. In other words, software must be available, discoverable, usable, and adaptable to new needs, both now and in the future. Research software therefore requires an environment that supports sustainability. Hence, a change is needed in the way research software development and maintenance are currently motivated, incentivized, funded, structurally and infrastructurally supported, and legally treated. Failing to do so will threaten the quality and validity of research. In this paper, we identify challenges for research software sustainability in Germany and beyond, in terms of motivation, selection, research software engineering personnel, funding, infrastructure, and legal aspects. Besides researchers, we specifically address political and academic decision-makers to increase awareness of the importance and needs of sustainable research software practices. In particular, we recommend strategies and measures to create an environment for sustainable research software, with the ultimate goal to ensure that software-driven research is valid, reproducible and sustainable, and that software is recognized as a first class citizen in research. This paper is the outcome of two workshops run in Germany in 2019, at deRSE19 - the first International Conference of Research Software Engineers in Germany - and a dedicated DFG-supported follow-up workshop in Berlin.
