In this paper we describe the system we have developed to overcome the textual entailment recognition task without any kind of semantic knowledge. For this purpose we have designed and implemented two modules. The first one analyzes the lexical information extracted from the phrases, while the second studies them from a syntactic perspective. The main goal of this research is to allow us to acknowledge the maximum accuracy that we can achieve without a semantic analysis. To evaluate our system we used the test corpus sets from Second and Third PASCAL Recognising Textual Entailment Challenges, obtaining accuracy rates of 62.12% and 65.63%, respectively.

In this paper we discuss a system used to recognize entailment relations within the AVE framework. This system creates representations of text snippets by means of a variety of lexical measures and syntactic structures. Once these representations have been created, we compare the corresponding to the text and to the hypothesis and we try to determine if there is an entailment relation between the text and the hypothesis. The hypotheses have been generated by merging the answers with their corresponding questions, applying a set of regular expression aimed at this issue. In the performed experiments our system obtained a maximum F-measure score of 0.40 and 0.39 for the development and test English corpora, respectively.

A Holistic-Blended Learning Environment has been developed in which Physical Face-to-Face, Cyber Face-to-Face and Cyber Asynchronous blended models are synthesized into one holistic-blended learning model. Such a model enables teachers and learners to do two-way interaction asynchronously and synchronously no matter whether they are in physical space or cyber space. The aim of this research is to explore whether significant differences exist in terms of effects on classroom climate and learning effectiveness between Physical Face-to-Face Group and Cyber Face-to-Face Group. The research methodology includes surveys, interviews, and content analyses. The results show that although Cyber Face-to-Face Group has a larger change on classroom climate and learning effectiveness before mid-term and after final exam than Physical Face-to-Face Group there was no significant difference in learning effectiveness between the Cyber Face-to-Face and Physical Face-to-Face student groups. Furthermore, results show a positive correlation between classroom climate and learning satisfaction. This study validates the positive potential of implementing holistic-blended learning for higher education.

This paper presents a method to automatically add named entities to the noun taxonomy of WordNet which are extracted from Wikipedia and the building of a new resource called Named Entity WordNet (NEWN) which adds named entities to the original WordNet. The paper motivates and demonstrates that knowledge acquisition can benefit from exploiting wiki texts due to some characteristics of these resources that provide advantages over other commonly used resources such as corpora or Machine Readable Dictionaries. In fact, a simple extraction approach, which is described, is able to enrich the English WordNet with more than 55,000 new instances (i.e. more than seven times the amount of instances that WordNet contains) with a precision over 93% thus providing a valuable resource for Natural language Processing tasks and especially for Named Entity Recognition.

Without increased effort and new initiatives, the total number of road traffic deaths and injuries worldwide could rise by some 65 percent between 2000 and 2020, while deaths in low and middle income countries are expected to increase by 80 percent. Hence prevention is the best remedy for this global public health problem. For the effective prevention of road traffic injuries, accurate information on modes, patterns and trends of traffic injuries are mandatory. WHO is encouraging the establishment of such data collection systems by publishing guidelines on injury surveillance. We compared the data fields of the existing traffic injury surveillance systems of the Asian countries of Thailand, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, and Japan with WHO guidelines and examined the possibilities of compiling a global database. Although the surveillance systems of these four countries share a lot of similarities, there are variations in code choices. In spite of such variations, RTI data can be integrated into a common global data bases by applying information technology.

Background: A fundamental goal of the U.S. National Institute of Health (NIH) "Roadmap" is to strengthen Translational Research, defined as the movement of discoveries in basic research to application at the clinical level. A significant barrier to translational research is the lack of uniformly structured data across related biomedical domains. The Semantic Web is an extension of the current Web that enables navigation and meaningful use of digital resources by automatic processes. It is based on common formats that support aggregation and integration of data drawn from diverse sources. A variety of technologies have been built on this foundation that, together, support identifying, representing, and reasoning across a wide range of biomedical data. The Semantic Web Health Care and Life Sciences Interest Group (HCLSIG), set up within the framework of the World Wide Web Consortium, was launched to explore the application of these technologies in a variety of areas. Subgroups focus on making biomedical data available in RDF, working with biomedical ontologies, prototyping clinical decision support systems, working on drug safety and efficacy communication, and supporting disease researchers navigating and annotating the large amount of potentially relevant literature. Results: We present a scenario that shows the value of the information environment the Semantic Web can support for aiding neuroscience researchers. We then report on several projects by members of the HCLSIG, in the process illustrating the range of Semantic Web technologies that have applications in areas of biomedicine. Conclusion: Semantic Web technologies present both promise and challenges. Current tools and standards are already adequate to implement components of the bench-to-bedside vision. On the other hand, these technologies are young. An initial version of AliQAn participated in the CLEF-2005 Spanish Monolingual Question Answering task. AliQAn has been improved and it has better results than last year. The system offers new and representative patterns in question analysis and extraction of the answer. A new ontology of questions types has been included. The inexact questions have been improved. The information retrieval engine has been modified considering only the words for the question analysis module as well as we do not use the question expansion of IR-n. Besides, many MACO and SUPAR errors have been solved and finally, dictionary about cities and countries have been incorporated. Finally, the BRILI system is presented as an extension of the AliQAn system, in order to deal with bilingual tasks. The final results achieved after that we improve our approach (overall accuracy of 37.89% for monolingual and 21.58% for bilingual) are shown in this paper.

For our participation in GeoCLEF 2005 we have developed a system made up of three modules. One of them is an Information Retrieval module and the others are Named Entity Recognition modules based on machine learning and based on knowledge. We have carried out several runs with different combinations of these modules for resolving the proposed tasks. The system scored second position for the tasks against German collections and third position for the tasks against English collections. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

The Answer Validation Exercise (AVE) is a pilot track within the Cross-language Evaluation Forum (CLEF) 2006. The AVE competition provides an evaluation frame- work for answer validations in Question Answering (QA). In our participation in AVE, we propose a system that has been initially used for other task as Recognising Textual Entailment (RTE). The aim of our participation is to evaluate the improvement our system brings to QA. Moreover, due to the fact that these two task (AVE and RTE) have the same main idea, which is to find semantic implications between two fragments of text, our system has been able to be directly applied to the AVE competition. Our system is based on the representation of the texts by means of logic forms and the computation of semantic comparison between them. This comparison is carried out using two different approaches. The first one managed by a deeper study of the Word- Net relations, and the second uses the measure defined by Lin in order to compute the semantic similarity between the logic form predicates. Moreover, we have also designed a voting strategy between our system and the MLEnt system, also presented by the University of Alicante, with the aim of obtaining a joint execution of the two systems developed at the University of Alicante. Although the results obtained have not been very high, we consider that they are quite promising and this supports the fact that there is still a lot of work on researching in any kind of textual entailment.
