Given the requirement for software engineering graduates to operate in Global software Development (GSD) environments, educators need to develop teaching methods to enhance and instill GSD knowledge in their students. In this paper, we discuss two projects that provided students with a first-hand learning experience of working within GSD teams. One project was with Siemens Corporate Research, whose focus was to shadow the development of a real-life GSD project. The second project, whose focus was virtual team software testing, was carried out in collaboration with Ball State University. In parallel with these projects we undertook qualitative research during which we analyzed students' own written reflections and face-to-face interviews that focused on their learning experiences in these contexts. We identified three specific forms of learning which had taken place: pedagogical, pragmatic and the acquisition of specific globally distributed knowledge. Our findings confirm that mimicking real work settings has educational benefits for problem-based learning environments.

Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) have been substantially improved in recent past. However, network attacks have become more sophisticated and increasingly complex: many of current attacks are coordinated and originated in multiple networks. To detect these attacks, IDSs need to obtain information on network events from multiple networks or administrative domains. This work demonstrates that a Distributed IDS (DIDS) can be composed of existing IDSs, improving the detection of misuses in a multiple network environment. We use a grid middleware for creating a service-based intrusion detection grid. We demonstrate through experimental results that the proposed DIDS allows the integration of heterogeneous existing IDSs and improves the detection of attacks by exploring the synergy between existing IDSs.

Model-based approaches have proven fruitful in the design and implementation of intelligent systems that provide automated diagnostic functions. A wide variety of models are used in these approaches to represent the particular domain knowledge, including analytic state-based models, input-output transfer function models, fault propagation models, and qualitative and quantitative physics-based models. Diagnostic applications are built around three main steps: observation, comparison, and diagnosis. If the modeling begins in the early stages of system development, engineering models such as fault propagation models can be used for testability analysis to aid definition and evaluation of instrumentation suites for observation of system behavior. Analytical models can be used in the design of monitoring algorithms that process observations to provide information for the second step in the process, comparison of expected behavior of the system to actual measured behavior. In the final diagnostic step, reasoning about the results of the comparison can be performed in a variety of ways, such as dependency matrices, graph propagation, constraint propagation, and state estimation. Realistic empirical evaluation and comparison of these approaches is often hampered by a lack of standard data sets and suitable testbeds. In this paper we describe the Advanced Diagnostics and Prognostics Testbed (ADAPT) at NASA Ames Research Center. The purpose of the testbed is to measure, evaluate, and mature diagnostic and prognostic health management technologies. This paper describes the testbed's hardware, software architecture, and concept of operations. A simulation testbed that accompanies ADAPT, and some of the diagnostic and decision support approaches being investigated are also discussed.

Semantic annotation and querying is currently applied on a number of versatile disciplines, providing the added-value of such an approach and, consequently the need for more elaborate - either case-specific or generic - tools. In this context, we have developed Eikonomia: an integrated semantically-aware tool for the description and retrieval of Byzantine artwork Information. Following the needs of the ORMYLIA Art Diagnosis Center for adding semantics to their legacy data, an ontology describing Byzantine artwork based on CIDOC-CRM, along with the interfaces for synchronization to and from the existing RDBMS have been implemented. This ontology has been linked to a reasoning tool, while a dynamic interface for the automated creation of semantic queries in SPARQL was developed. Finally, all the appropriate interfaces were instantiated, in order to allow easy ontology manipulation, query results projection and restrictions creation.

Vehicular Ad-hoc networks (VANETS) provide distributed real time communication of traffic hazards and road conditions among vehicles in a radio line of sight. We propose using VANETS to securely communicate with Positive Train Control (PTC) systems in order to reduce Highway Rail Intersection (HRI) incidents. This paper illustrates the similarities and differences between the two systems, discusses previous research into the work already done to integrate the two systems, and outlines the additional work necessary to successfully integrate the two systems.

The mobile cellular systems are expected to support multiple services with guaranteed quality of service (QoS). However, the ability of wireless systems to accommodate expected growth of traffic load and broadband services is limited by available radio frequency spectrum. Call admission control (CAC) is one of the resource management functions, which regulates network access to ensure QoS provisioning. However, the decision for CAC is very challenging issue due to user mobility, limited radio spectrum, and multimedia traffic characteristics. To deal with these problems, in this paper, we propose a fuzzy CAC system. We compare the performance of the proposed system with shadow cluster concept (SCC). We evaluate by simulation the performance of the proposed system. The proposed system has a good behavior on deciding the number of accepted connections while keeping the QoS for serving connections.

In order to support multimedia communication, it is necessary to develop routing algorithms which use for routing more than one QoS parameters. This is because new services such as video on demand and remote meeting systems require better QoS. Also, for admission control of multimedia applications different QoS parameters should be considered. In our previous work, we proposed an intelligent routing and CAC strategy using cooperative agents. In this paper we present a study on the requirements for the design and implementation of simulation packages for Grid systems. Grids are emerging as new distributed computing systems whose main objective is to manage and allocate geographically distributed computing resources to applications and users in an efficient and transparent manner. Grid systems are at present very difficult and complex to use for experimental studies of large-scale distributed applications. Although the field of simulation of distributed computing systems is mature, recent developments in large-scale distributed systems are raising needs not present in the simulation of the traditional distributed systems. Motivated by this, we present in this work a set of basic requirements that any simulation package for Grid computing should offer. This set of functionalities is obtained after a careful review of most important existing Grid simulation packages and includes new requirements not considered in such simulation packages. Based on the identified set of requirements, a Grid simulator is developed and exemplified for the Grid scheduling problem.

User modelling in on-line distance learning is an important research field focusing on two important aspects: describing and predicting students' actions and intentions as well as adapting the learning process to students' features, habits, preferences, and so on. The aim is to greatly stimulate and improve the learning experience. Indeed, on the one hand, students' intentions may change during the realization of learning activities and thus their actions evolve accordingly as the learning process moves forward. On the other hand, adaptive systems can effectively plan and design appropriate learning tasks according to students' features, habits and interests with the aim of facilitating the achievement of the learning goal. In this context, user modelling implies a continuous processing and analysis of user interaction data during long-term learning activities, which produces large and considerably complex information. As a consequence, processing this information is costly and could require computational capacity beyond that of a single computer. In this paper, we show how a grid approach can considerably decrease the processing time of log data of on-line distance educational Web-based systems. Our prototype is based on the master-worker paradigm and is implemented using a peer-to-peer platform running on the Planetlab nodes. The results of our study show the feasibility of using grid middleware to speed and scale up the processing of log data and thus achieve an efficient and dynamic user modeling in on-line distance learning

This paper investigates cooperative radio resource management for multiple cognitive radio networks in interference environments. The objective of this research is to manage shared radio resources fairly among multiple non-cooperative cognitive radio networks to optimize the overall performance. We emphasize the underlying predictability of network conditions and promote management solutions tailored to different interference environments. A multi-agent-system-based approach is proposed to achieve information sharing and decision distribution among multiple cognitive radio networks in a distributed manner. We address the distributed constraint optimization problem (DCOP) in cognitive radio networks and study the effectiveness of DCOP algorithms to find the optimal radio resource assignment through communications between distributed agents.
