Cyber-Physical Production systems (CPPSs) are highly configurable and versatile production systems that utilize diverse hardware components through control software. Managing control software variants in CPPS development is challenging as variation points in the software stem from multiple engineering disciplines. Furthermore, there is a lack of mechanisms to explicitly describe control software variants as part of the software. In this paper, we present an extension of the Variability for 4diac (V4rdiac) approach and investigate its usefulness in managing control software variants based on multidisciplinary variability in CPPS development and delta modeling. We extend the approach by considering its application engineering activities to produce client-specific control software variants. We also present a novel mechanism to visualize deltas in control software to reduce the effort of implementing and maintaining deltas. We apply V4rdiac in two case studies and conduct an additional user study with four participants from industry to evaluate its usefulness. The evaluation results confirm that the engineers were able to successfully manage the control software variants. The results also show that V4rdiac can be easily learned and increases industrial practitioners’ productivity in managing control software. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In recent years, many crowdsourcing platforms have emerged, using the resources of recruited workers to perform diverse outsourcing tasks, where the video analytics attracts much attention due to its practical implications. For maximum profits, platforms carefully choose the workers and determine the video analytics configurations to ensure accuracy; meanwhile, workers possess the flexibility to tailor the configurations for their indivi-dual gains, which makes it hard for platforms to optimize their profits considering the platform-worker conflicts. In this paper, we design an incentive mechanism for Multi-leader game-based video Analytics upon CROwdsourcing, named MACRO, to over-come the above situation. Under that mechanism, we first formu-late the utility optimization problems for platforms and workers, respectively. We then propose a dual ascent-based method to op-timally determine the video analytics configurations for a multi-platform game, ensuring Pareto efficiency. Moreover, in the context of a multi-leader game involving platform-worker conflicts, we design an incentive function with its incentive factor update strategy and propose an ADMM-based approach for maximizing incentives that motivate workers to contribute to the platforms' profits. Rigorous proofs demonstrate the linear convergence of the MACRO to the multi-leader Stackelberg equilibrium. Trace-driven experiments show that MACRO improves the Pareto efficiency by 26.3%, outperforming other approaches.

HIT-UAV: A high-altitude infrared thermal dataset for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-based object detection

We present the HIT-UAV dataset, a high-altitude infrared thermal dataset for object detection applications on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The dataset comprises 2, 898 infrared thermal images extracted from 43, 470 frames in hundreds of videos captured by UAVs in various scenarios including schools, parking lots, roads, and playgrounds. Moreover, the HIT-UAV provides essential flight data for each image, such as flight altitude, camera perspective, date, and daylight intensity. For each image, we have manually annotated object instances with bounding boxes of two types (oriented and standard) to tackle the challenge of significant overlap of object instances in aerial images. To the best of our knowledge, the HIT-UAV is the first publicly available high-altitude UAV-based infrared thermal dataset for detecting persons and vehicles. We have trained and evaluated well-established object detection algorithms on the HIT-UAV. Our results demonstrate that the detection algorithms perform exceptionally well on the HIT-UAV compared to visual light datasets since infrared thermal images do not contain significant irrelevant information about objects. Radars are widely used to obtain echo information for effective prediction, such as precipitation nowcasting. In this paper, recent relevant scientific investigation and practical efforts using Deep Learning (DL) models for weather radar data analysis and pattern recognition have been reviewed;particularly, in the fields of beam blockage correction, radar echo extrapolation, and precipitation nowcast. Compared to traditional approaches, present DL methods depict better performance and convenience but suffer from stability and generalization. The Entity Relationship (ER) model is widely used for creating ER schemas for modelling application domains in the field of Information systems development. However, when an ER schema is transformed to a Relational Database Schema (RDS), some important information on the ER schema may not be represented meaningfully on the RDS. This causes loss of information during the transformation process. Although, several previous researches have proposed solutions to remedy the situation, the problem still exists. Thus, in this on-going research we wish to improve the proposed solutions and maximize information preservation in the ER to relational transformation process. Cardinality ratio constraints, role names, composite attributes, and certain relationship types are among the information frequently lost in the transformation process. Deficiencies in the ER model and the transformation method seems causing this situation. We take the view that if the information lost is resolved;a one-to-one mapping should exist from the ER schema to its RDS. We modified the ER model and the transformation algorithm following a heuristic research method with a view to eliminating the deficiencies and thereby achieving a one-to-one mapping. We should show that the mapping exists for any real world application. We create a generic ER schema - an ER schema that represents any phenomena in symbolic form - and use it to show that a one-to-one mapping exists for any real world application. Realizing Generalized Zero-Shot Learning (GZSL) based on large models is emerging as a prevailing trend. However, most existing methods merely regard large models as black boxes, solely leveraging the features output by the final layer while disregarding potential performance enhancements from other layers. Indeed, numerous researchers have visually depicted variations in the features learned across different layers of neural networks. Motivated by this observation, we propose a Vision Transformer (ViT)-based GZSL method named Depth-Aware Multi-Modal ViT (DAM2ViT), which exploits multi-level features of ViT. DAM2ViT incorporates a multi-modal interaction block to align semantic information of categories across multiple layers, thereby augmenting the model's capacity to learn associations between visual and semantic spaces. Extensive experiments conducted on three benchmark datasets (i.e., CUB, SUN, AWA2) have showcased that DAM2ViT achieves competitive results compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Biodiesel has gained tremendous attention from researchers due to its environmentally friendly and renewable fuel manufactured domestically from vegetable oils or animal fats. Multiple factors, including emission and fuel efficiency, measure the performance of biodiesel. These characteristics make the process of evaluation and benchmarking a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem. This research attempts to survey the literature for multi-criteria decision-making applications on biodiesel. This systematic review was carried out on four scientific databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, and WoS. The collected articles were summarized and mapped into a coherent taxonomy, while the main challenges, motivations, and recommendations were collected and categorized for better understanding and finding out essential characteristics. The final set of included articles was 33, and they were categorized into six different categories. Most articles (n=15/33) investigated the evaluation and selection of biodiesel alternatives using MCDM. Furthermore, a state-of-art bibliometric analysis is provided. The analysis demonstrates several challenges in this area, such as source selection, optimum fuel blending, and uncertainty. This article is expected to assist future researchers in addressing the current gaps and contribute to advancing this area. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

We investigate the extendibility problem for Brauer states, focusing on the symmetric two-sided extendibility and the de Finetti extendibility. By employing the representation theory of the unitary and orthogonal groups, we provide a general recipe for finding the (n, m)-extendible and n-de Finetti-extendible Brauer states. In the two-sided case we describe the special symmetry that only appears for (n, n)-extendible symmetric states. From the concrete form of the commutant to the diagonal action of the orthogonal group, we explicitly determine the set of parameters for which the Brauer states are (1, 2)-, (1, 3)- and (2, 2)-extendible in any dimension d. Using the branching rules from SU(d) to SO(d), we obtain the set of n-de Finetti-extendible Brauer states in low dimensions, and analytically describe the n → ∞ limiting shape for d = 3. Driven by an unprecedented boom in artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT), edge intelligence (EI) pushes the frontier of AI from cloud to network edge, serving as a remarkable solution that unlocks the full potential of AI services. It is yet facing critical challenges in its decentralized management and security, limiting its capabilities to support services with numerous requirements. In this context, blockchain (BC) has been seen as a promising solution to tackle the above issues, and further support EI. Based on the number of citations or the relevance of emerging methods, this paper presents the results of a literature survey on the integration of EI and BC. Accordingly, we summarize the recent research efforts reported in the existing works on EI and BC. We then paint a comprehensive picture of the limitations of EI and why BC could benefit from EI. From there, we explore how BC benefits EI in terms of computing power management, data administration, and model optimization. In order to narrow the gap between immature BC and EI-amicable BC, we also probe into how to tailor BC to EI from four perspectives, including flexible consensus protocol, effective incentive, intellectuality smart contract, and scalability. Finally, some research challenges and future directions are presented. Different from existing surveys, our work focuses on the integration of EI and BC, develops some general models to help the reader build relevant optimization models in the integrated system, as well as provides detailed tutorials on implementation. We anticipate that this survey will motivate further discussions on the synergy of EI and BC, and offer some guidance in EI, BC, future networks, and other areas. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.

Recently, federated learning (FL) has emerged as a promising distributed machine learning (ML) technology, owing to the advancing computational and sensing capacities of end-user devices, as well as the increasing concerns on users' privacy. As a special architecture in FL, vertical FL (VFL) is capable of constructing a hyper ML model by embracing sub-models from different types of clients. These sub-models are trained locally by vertically partitioned data with distinct attributes. Therefore, the design of VFL is fundamentally different from that of conventional FL, raising new and unique research issues. In this paper, we aim to discuss key challenges in VFL with effective solutions, and conduct experiments on real-life datasets to shed light on these issues. Specifically, we first propose a general framework on VFL, and highlight the key differences between VFL and conventional FL. Then, we discuss research challenges rooted in VFL systems from four aspects, i.e., security and privacy risks, expensive computation and communication costs, possible structural damage caused by model splitting, and system heterogeneity. Afterwards, we develop solutions to addressing the aforementioned challenges, and conduct extensive experiments to showcase the effectiveness of the proposed solutions. Copyright © 2022, The Authors.
