This paper proposes a new algebraic system, Test Algebra (TA), for identifying faults in combinatorial testing for SaaS (software-as-a-Service) applications. SaaS as a part of cloud computing is a new software delivery model, and mission-critical applications are composed, deployed, and executed in cloud platforms. Testing SaaS applications is a challenging task because new applications need to be tested when they are composed before they can be deployed for execution. Combinatorial testing algorithms can be used to identify faulty configurations and interactions from 2-way all the way to k-way where k is the number of components in the application. The TA defines rules to identify faulty configurations and interactions. Using the rules defined in the TA, a collection of configurations can be tested concurrently in different servers and in any order and the results obtained will be still same due to the algebraic constraints.

Virtual machine (VM) based state machine approaches, i.e. VM replication, provide high availability without source code modifications, unfortunately, existing VM replication approaches suffer from excessive replication overheads. On the other hand, machine state replication is an overly strong (and therefore less efficient) requirement for high availability in the networked client-server system. In this paper, we propose a generic and highly efficient high availability solution through output continuity. Output continuity considers a backup server as a valid replica as long as the responses generated so far are the same between the backup and primary servers, the server state is propagated from the primary server to the backup server if and only if the previous outputs from the backup and primary servers are different. © 2012 IEEE.

Background: Systematic literature reviews are increasingly used in software engineering. Most systematic literature reviews require several hundred papers to be examined and assessed. This is not a trivial task and can be time consuming and error-prone. Aim: We present SLuRp - our open source web enabled database that supports the management of systematic literature reviews. Method: We describe the functionality of SLuRp and explain how it supports all phases in a systematic literature review. Results: We show how we used SLuRp in our SLR. We discuss how SLuRp enabled us to generate complex results in which we had confidence. Conclusions: SLuRp supports all phases of an SLR and enables reliable results to be generated. If we are to have confidence in the outcomes of SLRs it is essential that such automated systems are used. Copyright 2012 ACM.

Cyber-Physical systems (CPS) form an emerging discipline that integrates embedded computers with the physical processes under control. Typically, Cyber-Physical applications include low profile computing components, such as sensors and actuators that must communicate to carry out complex tasks. They may be found in different applications domains e.g. intelligent buildings, industrial automation or critical infrastructure control. This kind of applications requires certain features such as autonomy, fault tolerance, energy efficiency or solving heterogeneity and configurability issues. However, managing the communication issues in this kind of applications can be relatively complex. In this scenario, middleware technologies can help developers in the design of the next generation of CPS. This work describes the design principles of a type of CPS that requires cooperation. More specifically, it presents a generic family of logical cooperation topologies capable of adapting dynamically to changes in the environment. © 2012 IEEE.

Knowledge governance analyses to what extent knowledge processes are influenced by governance mechanisms. A number of advances have been made in this field, but much space remains for research. However, before advancing in this direction, we must have a tool to direct efforts and provide a certain notion of the progress made in research. This paper proposes a matrix that brings knowledge management processes into relation with knowledge governance objectives (ProGOb matrix). This matrix provides information about which knowledge processes affect which governance objectives, and to what extent. The ProGOb matrix can be highly useful in the current tendency towards the Web 2.0, where knowledge distribution requires knowledge governance which has clear objectives and takes specific actions.

Cloud computing providers are now offering their unused resources for leasing in the spot market, which has been considered the first step towards a full-fledged market economy for computational resources. Spot instances are virtual machines (VMs) available at lower prices than their standard on-demand counterparts. These VMs will run for as long as the current price is lower than the maximum bid price users are willing to pay per hour. Spot instances have been increasingly used for executing compute-intensive applications. In spite of an apparent economical advantage, due to an intermittent nature of biddable resources, application execution times may be prolonged or they may not finish at all. This paper proposes a resource allocation strategy that addresses the problem of running compute-intensive jobs on a pool of intermittent virtual machines, while also aiming to run applications in a fast and economical way. To mitigate potential unavailability periods, a multifaceted fault-aware resource provisioning policy is proposed. Our solution employs price and runtime estimation mechanisms, as well as three fault-tolerance techniques, namely check pointing, task duplication and migration. We evaluate our strategies using trace-driven simulations, which take as input real price variation traces, as well as an application trace from the Parallel Workload Archive. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of executing applications on spot instances, respecting QoS constraints, despite occasional failures.

Many applications in federated Grids have quality-of-service (QoS) constraints such as deadline. Admission control mechanisms assure QoS constraints of the applications by limiting the number of user requests accepted by a resource provider. However, in order to maximize their profit, resource owners are interested in accepting as many requests as possible. In these circumstances, the question that arises is: what is the effective number of requests that can be accepted by a resource provider in a way that the number of accepted external requests is maximized and, at the same time, QoS violations are minimized. In this paper, we answer this question in the context of a virtualized federated Grid environment, where each Grid serves requests from external users along with its local users and requests of local users have preemptive priority over external requests. We apply analytical queuing model to address this question. Additionally, we derive a preemption-aware admission control policy based on the proposed model. Simulation results under realistic working conditions indicate that the proposed policy improves the number of completed external requests (up to 25%). In terms of QoS violations, the 95% confidence interval of the average difference with other policies is between (14.79%, 18.56%).

3D virtual reality, including the current generation of multi-user virtual worlds, has had a long history of use in education and training, and it experienced a surge of renewed interest with the advent of Second Life in 2003. What followed shortly after were several years marked by considerable hype around the use of virtual worlds for teaching, learning and research in higher education. For the moment, uptake of the technology seems to have plateaued, with academics either maintaining the status quo and continuing to use virtual worlds as they have previously done or choosing to opt out altogether. This paper presents a brief review of the use of virtual worlds in the Australian and New Zealand higher education sector in the past and reports on its use in the sector at the present time, based on input from members of the Australian and New Zealand Virtual Worlds Working Group. It then adopts a forward-looking perspective amid the current climate of uncertainty, musing on future directions and offering suggestions for potential new applications in light of recent technological developments and innovations in the area. © 2013 Sue Gregory.
