National Information and Communications Technology Australia (NICTA) is the largest ICT research center in Australia, having been established 10 years ago in 2002. It has five laboratories in four Australian capital cities: Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, and Brisbane. There are currently around 700 staff and Ph.D. students working at NICTA. In June 2009, the 100th Ph.D. student to study at NICTA graduated. At present and averaged over the year, one new Ph.D. student studying at NICTA graduates every 10 days. NICTA has close links with its university members (Australian National University, the University of New South Wales, and the University of Melbourne) as well as with its partner universities (University of Sydney, Griffith University, Queensland University of Technology, University of Queensland, and most recently Monash University). Many of the researchers at NICTA are seconded from these universities. In addition, most of the other researchers at NICTA hold adjunct positions at one of these universities, enabling them to teach courses and supervise Ph.D. students. NICTA also has close links with a number of other research organizations (including Australia's CSIRO, France's INRIA, Japan's NII, and Germany's Fraunhofer Institute) and major companies (including Microsoft, Google, SAP, and Ericsson). Threshold concepts can be used to both organize disciplinary knowledge and explain why students have difficulties at certain points in the curriculum. Threshold concepts transform a student's view of the discipline;before being learned, they can block a student's progress. In this paper, we propose that in computing, skills, in addition to concepts, can sometimes be thresholds. Some students report finding skills more difficult than concepts. We discuss some computing skills that may be thresholds and compare threshold skills and threshold concepts. Copyright 2012 ACM.

We report preliminary results from an ongoing investigation of how computing professionals perceive and value selfdirected learning, based on a qualitative analysis of interviews with ten computing professionals. The professionals expect that future colleagues will have a well-developed ability to learn on their own. They indicate that professionals use a range of resources, strategies, and collaborators to help them learn. They find their work-related self-directed learning enjoyable, expressing a sense of confidence and pride;yet they often also find it to be a stressful never-ending process. Copyright 2012 ACM.

Virtual machine (VM) based state machine approaches, i.e. VM replication, provide high availability without source code modifications, unfortunately, existing VM replication approaches suffer from excessive replication overheads. On the other hand, machine state replication is an overly strong (and therefore less efficient) requirement for high availability in the networked client-server system. In this paper, we propose a generic and highly efficient high availability solution through output continuity. Output continuity considers a backup server as a valid replica as long as the responses generated so far are the same between the backup and primary servers, the server state is propagated from the primary server to the backup server if and only if the previous outputs from the backup and primary servers are different.

Support vector machine (SVM) is a pattern classification model suitable for classification and annotation of images using non-vectorial type representations of images. Varying length patterns extracted from image data correspond to sets of local feature vectors. Kernels designed for varying length patterns are called as dynamic kernels. The talk presents the issues in designing the dynamic kernel based SVMS for classification and annotation of images. Different methods for designing the dynamic kernels are presented. An intermediate matching kernel (IMK) for a pair of varying length patterns is constructed by matching the pairs of local feature vectors selected using a set of virtual feature vectors. For patterns corresponding to sets of feature vectors, a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) is used as the set of virtual feature vectors. The GMM-based IMK is considered for image processing tasks such as image classification, matching and annotation in content-based image retrieval. The talk presents results of experimental studies on image classification, annotation and retrieval of images using the kernel methods.

In this chapter we highlight the relationships between multiobjective optimization and parametric optimization that is used to solve such problems. Solution of a multiobjective problem is the set of Pareto efficient points, known in the literature as Pareto efficient frontier or Pareto front. Pareto points can be obtained by using either weighting the objectives or by Ε-constrained (hierarchical) method for solving multiobjective optimization models. Using those methods we can formulate them as parametric optimization problems and compute their efficient solution set numerically. We present a methodology for conic quadratic optimization that allows tracing the Pareto efficient frontier without discretization of the objective space and without solving the corresponding optimization problem at each discretization point. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2012.

Cyber-Physical systems (CPS) form an emerging discipline that integrates embedded computers with the physical processes under control. Typically, Cyber-Physical applications include low profile computing components, such as sensors and actuators that must communicate to carry out complex tasks. They may be found in different applications domains e.g. intelligent buildings, industrial automation or critical infrastructure control. This kind of applications requires certain features such as autonomy, fault tolerance, energy efficiency or solving heterogeneity and configurability issues. However, managing the communication issues in this kind of applications can be relatively complex. In this scenario, middleware technologies can help developers in the design of the next generation of CPS. This work describes the design principles of a type of CPS that requires cooperation. More specifically, it presents a generic family of logical cooperation topologies capable of adapting dynamically to changes in the environment.
