2011 Cross Language Evaluation Forum Conference, CLEF 2011

MusiCLEF is a novel benchmarking activity that aims at promoting the development of new methodologies for music access and retrieval on real public music collections. A major focus is given to mul- timodal retrieval that, in the case of music collections, can be obtained by combining content-based information, automatically extracted from music files, with contextual information, provided by users via tags, com- ments, or reviews. Moreover, MusiCLEF aims at maintaining a tight connection with real application scenarios, focusing on issues on music access and retrieval that are faced by professional users. To this end, the benchmark activity of the first year of MusiCLEF focused on two main tasks: Automatic categorization of music to be used as soundtrack of TV shows and automatic identification of the digitized material of a music digital library.

The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid's School of Computer engineering is implementing its internal quality assurance system from European directives and other sources, quality policies, and its underlying process map. One the main success critical factor implementing these processes is to obtain a real involvement of the different stakeholders. Change management is a good practice used in organizations as a way to provide a detailed road map, with caution signs pointing out the potential dangers. This paper presents the adaptation of a change management methodology to technical universities and explains the road explored implementing a key strategic process as the educational program improvement review process. We show, as an example, success results about of how a student workload study is developed and used. © 2011 IEEE.

Global routing in VLSI (very large scale integration) design is one of the most challenging discrete optimization problems in computational theory and practice. In this paper, we present a polynomial time algorithm for the global routing problem based on integer programming formulation with a theoretical approximation bound. The algorithm ensures that all routing demands are satisfied concurrently, and the overall cost is approximately minimized. We provide both serial and parallel implementation as well as develop several heuristics used to improve the quality of the solution and reduce running time. We provide computational results on two sets of well-known benchmarks and show that, with a certain set of heuristics, our new algorithms perform extremely well compared with other integer-programming models.

Currently, software testing is mainly carried on independently from software architecture-related information. Some approaches propose to perform integration and regression testing with respect to software architecture descriptions, but less attention has been paid to analysing software architecture in order to develop a less costly and time-consuming test plan that covers the requirements of the system of interest. If on one side, it is well known that providing an effective test plan is crucial to software quality, on the other side software testing is extremely difficult because it stems from the complexity of current software systems. In this paper we (i) elaborate on how a new architectural analysis can help in producing better test plans and (ii) identify a set of corresponding research challenges. We believe that considering and analysing architectural information for requirements satisfaction testing purposes will provide substantial benefits in terms of test plan specification process, test plan effectiveness, and test cases understandability. © 2011 ACM.

Documentation written in natural language and source code are two of the major artifacts of a software system. Tracking a variety of traceability links between software documentation and source code assists software developers in comprehension, efficient development, and effective management of a system. Automated traceability systems to date have been faced with a major open research challenge: how to extract these links with both high precision and high recall. In this paper we introduce an approach that combines three supporting techniques, Regular Expression, Key Phrases, and Clustering, with a Vector Space Model (VSM) to improve the performance of automated traceability between documents and source code. This combination approach takes advantage of strengths of the three techniques to ameliorate limitations of VSM. Four case studies have been used to evaluate our combined technique approach. Experimental results indicate that our approach improves the performance of VSM, increases the precision of retrieved links, and recovers more true links than VSM alone. © 2011 IEEE.

This article examines, from the energy viewpoint, a new lightweight, slim, high energy efficient, light-transmitting envelope system, providing for seamless, free-form designs for use in architectural projects. The research was based on envelope components already existing on the market, especially components implemented with granular silica aerogel insulation, as this is the most effective translucent thermal insulation there is today. The tests run on these materials revealed that there is not one that has all the features required of the new envelope model, although some do have properties that could be exploited to generate this envelope, namely, the vacuum chamber of vacuum insulated panels (VIP), the monolithic aerogel used as insulation in some prototypes, and reinforced polyester barriers. By combining these three design components — the high-performance thermal insulation of the vacuum chamber combined with monolithic silica aerogel insulation, the free-form design potential provided by materials like reinforced polyester and epoxy resins—, we have been able to define and test a new, variable geometry, energy-saving envelope system.

As modern software systems operate in a highly dynamic context, they have to adapt their behaviour in response to changes in their operational environment or/and requirements. Triggering adaptation depends on detecting quality of service (QoS) violations by comparing observed QoS values to predefined thresholds. These threshold-based adaptation approaches result in late adaptations as they wait until violations have occurred. This may lead to undesired consequences such as late response to critical events. In this paper we introduce a statistical approach CREQA - Control Charts for the Runtime Evaluation of QoS Attributes. This approach estimates at runtime capability of a system, and then it monitors and provides early detection of any changes in QoS values allowing timely intervention in order to prevent undesired consequences. We validated our approach using a series of experiments and response time datasets from real world web services. © 2011 IEEE.
