Automatic performance model transformation from a human-intuitive to a machine-efficient form

We address the issue of the development of performance models for programs that may be executed on large-scale computing systems. The commonly used approaches apply non-standard notations for model specification and often require that the software engineer has a thorough understanding of the underlying performance modeling technique. We propose to bridge the gap between the performance modeling and software engineering by incorporating UML. In our approach we aim to permit the graphical specification of performance model in a human-intuitive fashion on one hand, but on the other hand we aim for a machineefficient model evaluation. The user specifies graphically the performance model using UML. Thereafter, the transformation of the performance model from the human-usable UML representation to the machine-efficient C++ representation is done automatically. We describe our methodology and illustrate it with the automatic transformation of a sample performance model. Furthermore, we demonstrate the usefulness of our approach by modeling and simulating a real-world material science program. © 2009 SCPE.

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, in cooperation with Stanford University's department of Computer Science, was pleased to present the 2009 Spring Symposium Series, held Monday through Wednesday, March 23-25, 2009, at Stanford University. The titles of the nine symposia were Agents That Learn from Human Teachers, Benchmarking of Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning systems, Experimental Design for Real- World systems, Human Behavior Modeling, Intelligent Event Processing, Intelligent Narrative Technologies II, Learning by Reading and Learning to Read, Social Semantic Web: Where Web 2.0 Meets Web 3.0, and Technosocial Predictive Analytics. The goal of the Agents That Learn from Human Teachers symposium was to investigate how we can enable software and robotics agents to leam from real-time interaction with an everyday human partner. The aim of the Benchmarking of Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning systems symposium was to initiate the development of a problem repository in the field of qualitative spatial and temporal reasoning and identify a graded set of challenges for future midterm and long-term research. The Experimental Design symposium discussed the challenges of evaluating AI systems. The Human Behavior Modeling symposium explored reasoning methods for understanding various aspects of human behavior, especially in the context of designing intelligent systems that interact with humans. The Intelligent Event Processing symposium discussed the need for more Al-based approaches in event pro-cessing and defined a kind of research agenda for the field, coined as intelligent complex event processing (iCEP). The Intelligent Narrative Technologies IIAAAI symposium discussed innovations, progress, and novel techniques in the research domain. The Learning by Reading and Learning to Read symposium explored two aspects of making natural language texts semantically accessible to, and processable by, machines. The Social Semantic

Web caching has been determined to be an effective technique to improve performance in a Web-based environment. An increasing proportion of documents delivered over the Internet are becoming dynamic in nature in that the content presented is time-sensitive or it has been tailored for specific clients. Thus a request for such a Web page may not be satisfied by a page in a Web cache as its content is stale (out-of-date or not applicable to this user). The net effect is that dynamic content Web pages can be detrimental to the performance of a Web caching system as requests for these pages must be satisfied by fetching the page from the originating server. In this paper, we examine the effect of dynamic content on a partitioned and unified Web caching system. In partitioned Web caching, storage space is divided into two areas where one area is designated for large files (such as audio and video) while the other area is utilized for small files (such as images and text). Using simulation as the tool, the effect of dynamic content web pages will be examined in a partitioned as well as a unified (non-partitioned) caching environment. Web caching has been recognized as an effective approach to improve performance by storing frequently-accessed documents from originating servers at storage sites "closer" to requesting clients in order to reduce the load on the network bandwidth which in turn can reduce user response time. In this paper, we examine the performance of various architectures for cache cooperation in a web environment. The architectures under consideration include: distributed, hierarchical, and a hybrid of the two. A hierarchical web caching architecture utilizes a series of caches placed at different levels of the network (i.e. client, institutional, regional, and national) and user requests are satisfied at the lowest level possible (the first one that stores the desired document). Distributed web caching incorporates multiple cooperating caches all at the same level. The hybrid approach chosen in this paper contains a hierarchy of distributed caches in the hopes of exploiting advantages from both distributed and hierarchical caching. Using simulation as the tool, we compare the performance (mean response time, overall cache hit rates) of these architectures under a variety of different scenarios in an attempt to identify the conditions under which each is beneficial. This paper presents a case study that describes TSPi teaching (Introduction to the Team software Process) to 4th year students, grouped by teams, at the Computer Science School, Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM). The achievements of the teams, due to training and the use of TSPi, were analyzed and discussed. This paper briefly discusses the approach to the teaching and some of the issues that were identified. The teams collected data on the projects developed. They reviewed the schedule and quality status weekly. The metrics selected to analyze the impact on the students were: size, effort, productivity, costs and defects density. These metrics were chosen to analyze teams' performance evolution through project development. This paper also presents a study related to the evolution of estimation, quality and productivity improvements these teams obtained. This study will prove that training in TSPi has a positive impact on getting better estimations, reducing costs, improving productivity, and decreasing defect density. Finally, the teams 'performance are analyzed. © 2008 IEEE.

This paper introduces a novel particle swarm optimization algorithm based on the concept of black holes in physics, called random black hole particle swarm optimization (RBH-PSO) for the first time. In each dimension of a particle, we randomly generate a black hole located nearest to the best particle of the swarm in current generation and then randomly pull particles of the swarm into the black hole with a probability p. By this mechanism of random black hole, we can give all the particles another interesting direction to converge as well as another chance to fly out of local minima when a premature convergence happens. Several experiments on fifteen benchmark test functions are conducted to demonstrate that the proposed RBH-PSO algorithm is able to speedup the evolution process distinctly and improve the performance of global optimizer greatly. Finally, an actual application of the proposed algorithm to spam detection is conducted then compared to other three current methods.

In this paper we focus on the notion of robust matrix root-clustering analysis in a union of regions that are possibly disjoint and non symmetric. Indeed this work aims at computing a bound on the size of the uncertainty domain preserving matrix D u -stability. A Linear Fractional Transform (LFT) uncertainty is considered. To reduce conservatism, a new approach, based on some generalized S-procedure, is addressed. In the case where the studied matrices depend afflnely on the uncertain parameters or when the studied matrices are subject to polytopic uncertainty, it is known that recently developed L.M.J conditions are effective to assess the robust performance in a less conservative fashion. This paper further extends the preceding results and propose a unified way to obtain new L.M.J conditions even in the case of rational parameter dependence. Some conservatism induced by some techniques encountered in the literature is here reduced .
