Emerging deadline-driven Grid applications require a numberof computing resources to be available over a time frame, startingat a specific time in the future. To enable these applications, it is importantto predict the resource availability and utilise this informationduring provisioning because it affects their performance. It is impracticalto request the availability information upon the scheduling of everyjob due to communication overhead. However, existing work has notconsidered how the precision of availability information influences theprovisioning. As a result, limitations exist in developing advanced resourceprovisioning and scheduling mechanisms. This work investigateshow the precision of availability information affects resource provisioningin multiple site environments. Performance evaluation is conductedconsidering both multiple scheduling policies in resource providers andmultiple provisioning policies in brokers, while varying the precision ofavailability information. Experimental results show that it is possible toavoid requesting availability information for every Grid job scheduledthus reducing the communication overhead. They also demonstrate thatmultiple resource partition policies improve the slowdown of Grid jobs.

Grid technologies are emerging as the next generation of distributed computing, allowing the aggregation of resources that are geographically distributed across different locations. The network remains an important requirement for any Grid application, as entities involved in a Grid system (such as users, services, and data) need to communicate with each other over a network. The performance of the network must therefore be considered when carrying out tasks such as scheduling, migration or monitoring of jobs. Network buffers management policies affect the network performance, as they can lead to poor latencies (if buffers become too large), but also leading to a lot of packet droppings and low utilization of links, when trying to keep a low buffer size. Therefore, network buffers management policies should be considered when simulating a real Grid system. In this paper, we introduce network buffers management policies into the GridSim simulation toolkit. Our framework allows new policies to be implemented easily, thus enabling researchers to create more realistic network models. Fields which will harness our work are scheduling, or QoS provision. We present a comprehensive description of the overall design and a use case scenario demonstrating the conditions of links varied over time.

Sensor networks employed by scientific applications oftenneed to support localized collaboration of sensor nodes to perform in-network data processing. This includes new quantitative synthesis andhypothesis testing in near real time, as data streaming from distributedinstruments, to transform raw data into high level domain-dependent information. This paper investigates in-network data processing mechanismswith dynamic data requirements in resource constrained heterogeneoussensor networks. Particularly, we explore how the temporaland spatial correlation of sensor measurements can be used to trade offbetween the complexity of coordination among sensor clusters and thesavings that result from having fewer sensors involved in in-network processing,while maintaining an acceptable error threshold. Experimentalresults show that the proposed in-network mechanisms can facilitate theefficient usage of resources and satisfy data requirement in the presenceof dynamics and uncertainty.

The design navigator is a tool for reverse-engineering object-oriented programs into charts at any level of abstraction. The design navigator discovers the object-oriented building blocks in the design of programs and visualises them in terms of LePUS3, a formal design description language. We demonstrate that program visualization in a formal language is not only possible in principle but also of practical benefit.

A content delivery network (CDN) is expected to provide high performance content delivery, which requires scalable infrastructure to achieve global coverage. The provision of such infrastructure may form a substantial entry barrier for new CDN providers, as well as affecting commercial viability of the existing ones. Peering of CDNs can be a way to allow dynamic infrastructural cooperation between CDNs in a scalable manner, in order to mitigate the impact of flash crowds and to achieve better overall service times. In this paper, we present a quality of service (QoS)-driven model to evaluate the user perceived performance of CDN peering relationships. In this model, an overloaded CDN redirects a fraction of its incoming requests to peered CDNs and thereby can avoid the impact of flash crowds. The model-based approach also assists in making concrete QoS guarantee for a given CDN. Our approach endeavors to achieve scalability for a CDN in a user transparent manner.

This paper proposes a formal framework for reconfigurable control, based on model checking. This framework first generates a flexible model (i.e., an execution structure) according to the diagnosis, then defines a temporal specification language to deal with the problems due to infinite execution cycles and non-determinism, and finally provides the algorithms that will automatically verify whether the updated model satisfies the desired specification.

A new nonlinear protocol is proposed for state consensus of multi-agent systems in this paper. It is shown that this protocol can provide faster convergence rate than the typical linear protocol, presented by Olfati-Saber and Murray, and furthermore guarantees the states of agents reach a consensus in finite time, provided that the interaction topology, represented by a directed graph, has a spanning tree.

We address the issue of the development of performance models for programs that may be executed on large-scale computing systems. The commonly used approaches apply non-standard notationsformodel specification and often require that the software engineer has a thorough understanding of the underlying performance modeling technique. We propose to bridge the gap between the performance modeling and software engineering by incorporating UML. In our approach we aim to permit the graphical specification of performance model in a human-intuitive fashion on one hand, but on the other hand we aim for a machine-efficient model evaluation. The user specifies graphically the performance model using UML. Thereafter, the transformation of the performance model from the human-usable UML representation to the machine-efficient C++ representation is done automatically. We describe our methodology and illustrate it with the automatic transformation of a sample performance model. © 2008 IEEE.

This paper presents a grid portal for protein secondary structure prediction developed by using services of Aneka, a .NET-based enterprise grid technology. The portal is used by research scientists to discover new prediction structures in a parallel manner. An SVM (support vector machine)-based prediction algorithm is used with 64 sample protein sequences as a case study to demonstrate the potential of enterprise grids.

In novel market-oriented resource sharing models, resource consumers pay for the resource usage and expect that non-functional requirements for the application execution, termed as quality of service (QoS), are satisfied. QoS is negotiated between two parties following the specific negotiation protocols and is recorded using service level agreements (SLAs). However, most of the existing work assumes that the communication partners know about the SLA negotiation protocols and about the SLA templates before entering the negotiation. However, this is a contradictory assumption, if we consider computational grids and novel, commercially oriented computing clouds where consumers and providers meet each other dynamically. In this paper, we present novel meta-negotiation and SLA-mapping solutions for grid workflows bridging the gap between current QoS models and grid workflows, one of the most successful grid programming paradigms. We illustrate the open research issues with a real world case study. Thereafter, we present document models for the specification of meta-negotiations and SLA-mappings. We discuss the architecture for the management of meta-negotiations and SLA-mappings as well as integration of the architecture into a grid workflow management framework.
