A Grid based e-Research platform is being developed for providing a simulation-based virtual reality environment for clinical management and therapy treatment. The development of this platform involves cross-disciplinary experts aiming at combining the state-of-the-art Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis tools into clinical management system. These fluid dynamic studies support the physician and surgeon with recommendations for the possible range of treatment and operation techniques. The platform will consist of a cluster of computing nodes, a middleware (Grid management layer), internet accessible tomography data and CFD analysis tools, and a tailored graphical user interface (GUI) application for various experts. In future, this platform will provide the novel creation of a prototype virtual reality model environment that links each technical modular consisting of a consolidation system with flexible interface model for exchanging data efficiently. Furthermore, besides allowing expeditious sharing of data and analytical tools, it will also furnish a foundation for cross-disciplinary collaboration and will definitely foster further advancement of related biomechanics researches. © 2007, Australian Computer Society, Inc.

Utility computing has been anticipated to be the next generation of computing usage. Users have the freedom to easily switch to any commercial computing service to complete jobs whenever the need arises and simply pay only on usage, without any investment costs. A commercial computing service however has certain objectives or goals that it aims to achieve. In this paper, we identify three essential objectives for a commercial computing service: (i) meet SLA, (ii) maintain reliability, and (iii) earn profit. This leads to the problem of whether a resource management policy implemented in the commercial computing service is able to meet the required objectives or not. So, we also develop two evaluation methods that are simple and intuitive: (i) separate and (ii) integrated risk analysis to analyze the effectiveness of resource management policies in achieving the required objectives. Evaluation results based on five policies successfully demonstrate the applicability of separate and integrated risk analysis to assess policies in terms of the required objectives. © 2007 IEEE.

Service-Oriented Architectures provide integration of interoperability for independent and loosely coupled services. Web services and the associated new standards such as WSRF are frequently used to realise such Service-Oriented Architectures. In such systems, autonomic principles of self-configuration, self-optimisation, self-healing and self-adapting are desirable to ease management and improve robustness. In this paper we focus on the extension of the self management and autonomic behaviour of a WSRF container connected by a structured P2P overlay network to monitor and rectify its QoS to satisfy its SLAs. The SLA plays an important role during two distinct phases in the life-cycle of a WSRF container Firstly during service deployment when services are assigned to containers in such a way as to minimise the threat of SLA violations, and secondly during maintenance when violations are detected and services are migrated to other containers to preserve QoS. In addition, as the architecture has been designed and built using standardised modem technologies and with high levels of transparency, conventional web services can be deployed with the addition of a SLA specification.

Asynchronous data communication mechanisms (ACMs) have been extensively studied as data connectors between independently timed concurrent processes. In previous work, an automatic ACM synthesis method based on the generation of the reachability graph and the theory of regions was proposed. In this paper, we propose a new synthesis method based on the composition of Petri net modules, avoiding the exploration of the reachability graph. The behavior of ACMs is formally defined and correctness properties are specified in CTL. Model checking is used to verify the correctness of the Petri net models. The algorithms to generate the Petri net models are presented. Finally, a method to automatically generate C++ source code from the Petri net model is described.

In this paper, we present the design of Aneka, a .NET based service-oriented platform for desktop grid computing that provides: (i) a configurable service container hosting pluggable services for discovering, scheduling and balancing various types of workloads and (ii) a flexible and extensible framework/API supporting various programming models including threading, batch processing, MPI and dataflow. Users and developers can easily use different programming models and the services provided by the container to run their applications over desktop Grids managed by Aneka. We present the implementation of both the essential and advanced services within the platform. We evaluate the system with applications using the grid task and dataflow models on top of the infrastructure and conclude with some future directions of the current system.

Effective scheduling is a key concern for the execution of performance driven grid applications. In this paper, we propose a dynamic critical path (DCP) based workflow scheduling algorithm that determines efficient mapping of tasks by calculating the critical path in the workflow task graph at every step. It assigns priority to a task in the critical path which is estimated to complete earlier. Using simulation, we have compared the performance of our proposed approach with other existing heuristic and meta-heuristic based scheduling strategies for different type and size of workflows. Our results demonstrate that DCP based approach can generate better schedule for most of the type of workflows irrespective of their size particularly when resource availability changes frequently.

Grid technologies are emerging as the next generation of distributed computing, allowing the aggregation of resources that are geographically distributed across different locations. However, these resources are independent and managed separately by various organizations with different policies. This will have a major impact to users who submit their jobs to the Grid, as they have to deal with issues such as policy heterogeneity, security and fault tolerance. Moreover, the changes of Grid conditions, such as resources that may become unavailable for a period of time due to maintenance and/or suffer failures, would significantly affect the quality of service (QoS) requirements of users. Therefore, it is essential for users to take into account the effects of resource failures during jobs execution. In this paper, we present our work on introducing resource failures and failure detection into the GridSim simulation toolkit. As we need to conduct repeatable and controlled experiments, it is easier to use simulation as a means of studying complex scenarios. We also give a detailed description of the overall design and a use case scenario demonstrating the conditions of resources varied over time.

RoboCupSoccer domain has several leagues which varies in the rule of play such as specification of players, number of players, field size, and time length. Nevertheless, each RoboCup league is a variant of a soccer league and therefore they are based on some basic rules of soccer. A layered design of agents system presented in the work of Garcia et al. (2004) shows a modular approach to build control for a team of robots participating in RoboCupSoccer E-League. Based on this design, we propose a generalized architecture offering flexibility to switch between leagues and programming language while maintaining Prolog as cognitive layer. Prolog is a very convenient tool to design strategies for soccer players using simple rules close to human reasoning. Sometimes this reasoning needs to deal with uncertainty, fuzziness or incompleteness of the information. In these cases it is useful Fuzzy Prolog (Guadarrama et al., 2004), (Munoz-Hernandez and Vaucheret, 2005), (Munoz-Hernandez and Gomez-Perez, 2005), (Munoz-Hernandez and Vaucheret, 2006). In this paper we propose to use a combination of Prolog (that is crisp) and Fuzzy Prolog to implement the cognitive layer in RoboCupSoccer, which has the advantage of incorporating as conventional logic as fuzzy logic in this layer. A prototype of a team based on this architecture has been build for RoboCup soccer simulator, and we show that this approach provides a convenient way of incorporating a team strategy in high level (human-like) manner, where technical details are encapsulated and fuzzy information is represented
