This paper addresses the need of semantic component in the grid environment to discover and describe the grid resources semantically. We propose semantic grid architecture by introducing a knowledge layer at the top of Gridbus broker architecture and thereby enabling broker to discover resources semantically. The semantic component in the knowledge layer enables semantic description of grid resources with the help of ontology template. The ontology template has been created using Protege-OWL editor for different types of computing resources in the grid environment. The Globus Toolkit's MDS is used to gather grid resource information and Protege-OWL libraries are used to dynamically create knowledge base of grid resources. Algernon inference engine is used for interacting with the knowledge base to discover suitable resources.

In recent years, traditional computingsystems face the problems of scalability as the need for information processing services is ever increasing. Grid, as a pool of computing resources, solves the problem in some degree by providing an integrated computing and resources environment. Thus, there emerge many strategies related to grid resource allocation management (GRAM). However, almost all of these strategies focus on how to allocate the existing computing resources but overlook the possibility of controlling these resources. Therefore, services and computing nodes are always tightly coupled. In this paper, we describe a new framework called GSAF (a grid-based services transfer framework) to solve the problem. GSAF binds services and computing nodes dynamically through services migration and service cache to break the tight coupling. The migration of service components to more efficient computing nodes helps balance the processing burden and extends the computing abilities. In our experiment, we provide a prototype application of GSAF in the data mining system to demonstrate it.

In this article, we describe a grid of sensors to collect patients' vital data and to allow real time monitoring of patients in heath-care centres. We analyse the problem scenario and identify the components involved towards the construction of an integrated and homogeneous management system. Finally, we present a case study to demonstrate the applicability of our approach

Virtual reality systems should provide a satisfactory immersive experience for the user. However, the time needed to fully download and display them in the user platform, and long-time delays to start an interaction, may negatively influence the users perception of the overall quality. In order to obtain high quality networked virtual environments in the Internet, as it happens with other software development projects, including a "quality phase" seems not to be enough. This paper proposes a series of development guidelines for virtual environments with the aim of both making the development process easier and improving the final system.
With the advent of Grid and application technologies, scientists and engineers are building more and more complex applications to manage and process large data sets, and execute scientific experiments on distributed r...

Internet networked virtual environments, such as VRML-based environments, should provide a satisfactory immersive experience to users. However, the time needed to download them and display them in the user platform, as well as the time delays in effectively starting an interaction, may adversely influence the overall user satisfaction. This article shows the results of a series of usability tests oriented towards improving Internet networked virtual environments construction by analysing the influence of time delays and other problems in the users' perception of virtual environments.

This paper describes an empirical study that investigates the knowledge that Computer Science students have about the extent of their own previous learning. The study compares self-generated estimates of performance with actual performance on a data structures quiz taken by undergraduate students in courses requiring data structures as a pre-requisite. The study is contextualized and grounded within a research paradigm in Psychology called calibration of knowledge that suggests that self-knowledge across a range of disciplines is highly unreliable. Such self-knowledge is important because of its role in meta-cognition, particularly in cognitive self-regulation and monitoring. It is also important because of the credence that faculty give to student self-reports. Our results indicate that Computer Science student self-estimates correlate moderately with their performance on a quiz, more so for estimates provided after they have taken the quiz than before. The pedagogical implications are that students should be provided with regular opportunities for empirical validation of their knowledge as well as being taught the metacognitive skills of regular self-testing in order to overcome validation bias. Jobs submitted into a cluster have varying requirements depending on user-specific needs and expectations. Therefore, in utility-driven cluster computing, cluster resource management systems (RMSs) need to be aware of these requirements in order to allocate resources effectively. Service level agreements (SLAs) can be used to differentiate different value of jobs as they define service conditions that the cluster RMS agrees to provide for each different job. The SLA acts as a contract between a user and the cluster whereby the user is entitled to compensation whenever the cluster RMS fails to deliver the required service. In this paper, we present a proportional share allocation technique called LibraSLA that takes into account the utility of accepting new jobs into the cluster based on their SLA. We study how LibraSLA performs with respect to several SLA requirements that include: (i) deadline type whether the job can be delayed, (ii) deadline when the job needs to be finished, (iii) budget to be spent for finishing the job, and (iv) penalty rate for compensating the user for failure to meet the deadline
