The Effect of the Immediate Feedback by the Collaborative Education Tool ViLLE on learning for Business Mathematics in Higher Education

This article outlines the effect of the collaborative educational tool ViLLE when learning business mathematics in higher education. ViLLE validates students’ answers during the assessment process and provides immediate feedback, enabling students to receive feedback and guidance about the correctness of their answers. The learning results in the business mathematics course in Turku University of Applied Sciences are used for the study. The effect of the ViLLE tool is researched by quasi-experimental study using the 2013 course as the control group and 2014 course as the treatment group. This research confirmed that the usage of the ViLLE tool improved the students’ learning of business mathematics.

The temperature rise degrades the power of solar cells. The use of phase change material (PCM) is a self-regulatory process of upgrading the performance. Fins can additionally upgrade the performance. A photovoltaic (PV) equipped with fins embedded PCM is modelled in Fluent. Three arrangements: PV with no temperature management, PCM equipped PV and fins embedded PCM for PV are compared for South East UK. The outcomes convey that, for summers at Portsmouth (50.80°N, 1.09°W), the aggregated daily electrical output of a 4000Wp photovoltaic array can be elevated by 1200Wh and 1400Wh using phase change material and fins embedded phase change material respectively.

Investigating the Development of Reasoning Abilities Among Bruneian Physics Students After 1 Year Exposure to Cambridge International Advanced Level Program

The aim of this study is to investigate the development of different reasoning abilities among Bruneian physics students after undergoing one year of Cambridge International Advanced level ('A' level) programme. This particular study administered pre and post questionnaires, namely, verbal critical reasoning, spatial ability and abstract reasoning. These questionnaires were distributed among 'A' level physics students from four out of six, sixth form centres. There were 173 students (73 male and 100 female students) who participated in the study. Non-parametric tests (i.e. Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test and Mann Whitney U) were conducted on the pre-test and post-test scores of verbal critical reasoning, spatial ability and abstract reasoning and their corresponding gain scores due to violation of normality and presence of outliers in the data. Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test revealed that there were significant differences in the spatial reasoning score and abstract reasoning score from pre-test to post-test. Meanwhile Mann Whitney U test indicated that male students outperformed female students in abstract reasoning during pre-test and post-test. Thus for this particular sample, there is an increase in students' abstract reasoning abilities and spatial reasoning abilities. A further investigation might be needed in exploring the reasoning abilities scores of the students with their 'A' level results to make a stronger claim for this study.

The reverse shoulder implant is an implant for total replacement of the glenohumeral joint of patients suffering from osteoarthritis and with a damaged rotator cuff. The problem that arises with these conjoined ailments is that the displacement of the humeral head causes limited movement of the upper limb, with vertical mobility restricted to only allow for the arm to ascend to roughly the height of the shoulder. Attaching the ball to the scapula and the socket to the top of the humerus fixes the centre of rotation of the joint to increase the moment arm over the healthy shoulder's original position enabling patients' movement and dexterity to return. In this study the numerical evaluation of a Verso Shoulder Implant (Biomet, UK) was carried out and the mechanical parameter such as stress, strain and deformation at the interface between the glenoid and scapula bone was analysed.

This paper designed a digital game-based adventure education counseling course to adjust ten students' interpersonal deviant behaviors at a primary school far from cities in Taiwan. Researchers take quasi-experimental design to investigate the effectiveness after the course with questionnaires, short-Term reflections and feedback forms. The results show that there were significant differences between pretest and posttest results which proved that the course can effectively adjust students' interpersonal deviant behavior and those games were felt satisfied.

This paper analyzes the adoption of Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies in Sweden. The dataset consists of a recent and representative sample of Swedish AM users (companies, universities, and research institutes). The authors investigate two questions. Firstly, what are the current applications of AM in Sweden (e.g. Rapid Prototyping (RP), production)? Secondly, what are the factors that can explain the variation in AM adoption among the users? Using a regression analysis technique, the main findings are as follows. (i) There is a variation among users’ choice of AM application, and the majority of users are expanding their AM applications beyond RP. (ii) There are two factors that positively affect the decision of firms to expand classical RP and also incorporate production and management. These two factors are using multiple AM technologies (as opposed to single Fused Deposition Modeling technology) and being small companies. The authors discuss the implication of these results.

In this paper, we explain how an experiential learning course and study tour to Gansu Province (People’s Republic of China) enabled undergraduates at the Singapore Management University (SMU) to acquire 21st-century competencies and higher-order thinking skills by analyzing and evaluating specific aspects of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and China–Singapore (Chongqing) Connectivity Initiative — New International Land–Sea Trade Corridor (CCI-ILSTC) with emphasis on developing viable Go-To-Market (GTM) strategies aimed at selling Gansu produce in four Southeast Asian markets. We share how the course was designed to support the attainment of key learning goals and discuss how we turned pedagogical aspirations into concrete learning outcomes. We introduce key aspects of the so-called “SMU-XO” project that the students conducted in partnership with an industry partner, Pacific International Lines (PIL), and discuss how the project work helped learners to gain global competency by (i) examining critical issues related to BRI such as multi-modal infrastructure connectivity, (ii) appreciating the local perspectives of project stakeholders in Lanzhou and Shanghai and (iii) successfully interacting with people from different cultures, namely China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand.

When first year students enter a new program that fundamentally differs from their past educational experiences, new types of pressures may impact both students and their families. To identify some of the pressures that should be anticipated when introducing a new program, this exploratory case study focused on the hopes, concerns, and fears of the first cohort of students enrolled in the first semester of a pilot program at the Purdue Polytechnic Institute - a new multi-disciplinary, hands-on, competency-based program. Since students do not act in isolation, additional considerations are given to expectations and concerns of their parents, and faculty response to those concerns. Students and parents were surveyed, and in-depth interviews were conducted with both students and faculty. Qualitative and quantitative analyses found that while the majority of students and parents were excited about the hands-on, student-centered approach, concerns were raised about employability, the ability to seamlessly transfer back to traditional programs, and ability to develop the same skills and knowledge as students in traditional technology programs would. The use of badges instead of grades caused further confusion and distress among students, especially during the first few weeks of the program. Program faculty attempted to ameliorate these concerns through transparency and by providing additional structure, with mixed success. Along with the findings, potential implications for similar programs and areas for future research are discussed. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2015.

Focusing on the quality of education, skills, and employability of our graduates in computing-related fields, this work proposes a cost-effective approach to achieve these goals. The Evaluation and Proficiency Infrastructure, Curricula, and Services (EPICS) extends successful methods in other units on campus in an innovative way as synergistic combination of faculty, Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs), and educational technology using the Canvas Webcourses learning Management System (LMS) already in use at our college. We integrate computer-based evaluation with a close-knit review and learning cycle based on directed and open tutoring to collectively form the Evaluation and Proficiency Center (EPC). Initial results have been encouraging, as students' test scores and survey results indicate a 43% reduction in D or F grades compared to a section of the same course with the same instructor, using conventional delivery, and overwhelmingly positive responses from students regarding the effectiveness of pedagogical strategies (i.e., Exemplar Vignettes, content tutoring), assessment models (i.e., electronically delivered quizzes, flexible scheduling, use of testing center), and tutoring strategies (i.e., self-paced, exam results review). In this manuscript, the EPICS process, as well as results collected from student performance and perceptions of the initial implementation, will be addressed. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2016.
