T cells monitor the health status of cells by identifying foreign peptides displayed on their surface. T-cell receptors (TCRs), which are protein complexes found on the surface of T cells, are able to bind to these peptides. This process is known as TCR recognition and constitutes a key step for immune response. Optimizing TCR sequences for TCR recognition represents a fundamental step towards the development of personalized treatments to trigger immune responses killing cancerous or virus-infected cells. In this paper, we formulated the search for these optimized TCRs as a reinforcement learning (Formula Presented) problem, and presented a framework (Formula Presented) with a mutation policy using proximal policy optimization. (Formula Presented) mutates TCRs into effective ones that can recognize given peptides. (Formula Presented) leverages a reward function that combines the likelihoods of mutated sequences being valid TCRs measured by a new scoring function based on deep autoencoders, with the probabilities of mutated sequences recognizing peptides from a peptide-TCR interaction predictor. We compared (Formula Presented) with multiple baseline methods and demonstrated that (Formula Presented) significantly outperforms all the baseline methods to generate positive binding and valid TCRs. The accurate detection and quantification of activities of daily life (ADL) are crucial for assessing the health status of palliative patients to allow an optimized treatment in the last phase of life. Current evaluation methods heavily rely on subjective self-reports or external observations by clinical staff, lacking objectivity. To address this limitation, we propose a radar-based approach for recognizing ADLs in a palliative care context. In our proof of concept study, we recorded five different ADLs relevant to palliative care, all occurring within a hospital bed, from N=14 healthy participants (57% women, aged 28.6 ± 5.3years). All movements were recorded using two frequency-modulated continuous wave radar systems measuring velocity, range, and angle. A convolutional neural network combined with long short-term memory achieved a classification accuracy of 99.8 ± 0.4% across five cross-validation folds. Furthermore, we compare our initial approach, which takes into account all dimensions of the available radar data, to a simplified version, where only velocity information over time is fed into the network. While these results demonstrate the high potential of radar-based sensing to automatically detect and quantify activities in a palliative care context, future work is still necessary to assess the applicability to real-world hospital scenarios.

This is a tutorial and survey paper on metric learning. Algorithms are divided into spectral, probabilistic, and deep metric learning. We first start with the definition of distance metric, Mahalanobis distance, and generalized Mahalanobis distance. In spectral methods, we start with methods using scatters of data, including the first spectral metric learning, relevant methods to Fisher discriminant analysis, Relevant Component Analysis (RCA), Discriminant Component Analysis (DCA), and the Fisher-HSIC method. Then, large-margin metric learning, imbalanced metric learning, locally linear metric adaptation, and adversarial metric learning are covered. We also explain several kernel spectral methods for metric learning in the feature space. We also introduce geometric metric learning methods on the Riemannian manifolds. In probabilistic methods, we start with collapsing classes in both input and feature spaces and then explain the neighborhood component analysis methods, Bayesian metric learning, information theoretic methods, and empirical risk minimization in metric learning. In deep learning methods, we first introduce reconstruction autoencoders and supervised loss functions for metric learning. Then, Siamese networks and its various loss functions, triplet mining, and triplet sampling are explained. Deep discriminant analysis methods, based on Fisher discriminant analysis, are also reviewed. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are a game-changer in the transportation industry; they will alter cityscapes, cut down on accidents, and reimagine how people experience mobility. This study investigates the complex relationship between autonomous vehicles and high-tech AI systems, looking at how these two technologies can influence transportation in the future. The paper highlights crucial developments in sensor fusion, machine learning algorithms, and real-time data processing that are essential for the development of fully autonomous systems by analyzing the present status of AV technology. In the first part of the study, the basic technologies that support AVs are described. These technologies include LiDAR, radar, cameras, and GPS. When taken together, they allow AVs to perceive their surroundings and locate themselves. After that, it delves into how AI is helping AVs understand sensor data, make judgments in real-time, and carry out complicated maneuvers, showcasing how advancements in deep learning, neural networks, and predictive analytics are powering these capabilities. Understanding the perceptual invariances of artificial neural networks is essential for improving explainability and aligning models with human vision. Metamers—stimuli that are physically distinct yet produce identical neural activations—serve as a valuable tool for investigating these invariances. We introduce a novel approach to metamer generation by leveraging ensembles of artificial neural networks, capturing shared representational subspaces across diverse architectures, including convolutional neural networks and vision transformers. To characterize the properties of the generated metamers, we employ a suite of image-based metrics that assess factors such as semantic fidelity and naturalness. Our findings show that convolutional neural networks generate more recognizable and human-like metamers, while vision transformers produce realistic but less transferable metamers, highlighting the impact of architectural biases on representational invariances. Schizophrenia (SZ) is a prevalent mental disorder characterized by cognitive, emotional, and behavioral changes. Symptoms of SZ include hallucinations, illusions, delusions, lack of motivation, and difficulties in concentration. While the exact causes of SZ remain unproven, factors such as brain injuries, stress, and psychotropic drugs have been implicated in its development. SZ can be classified into different types, including paranoid, disorganized, catatonic, undifferentiated, and residual. Diagnosing SZ involves employing various tools, including clinical interviews, physical examinations, psychological evaluations, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), and neuroimaging techniques. Electroencephalography (EEG) recording is a significant functional neuroimaging modality that provides valuable insights into brain function during SZ. However, EEG signal analysis poses challenges for neurologists and scientists due to the presence of artifacts, long-term recordings, and the utilization of multiple channels. To address these challenges, researchers have introduced artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, encompassing conventional machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) methods, to aid in SZ diagnosis. This study reviews papers focused on SZ diagnosis utilizing EEG signals and AI methods. The introduction section provides a comprehensive explanation of SZ diagnosis methods and intervention techniques. Subsequently, review papers in this field are discussed, followed by an introduction to the AI methods employed for SZ diagnosis and a summary of relevant papers presented in tabular form. Additionally, this study reports on the most significant challenges encountered in SZ diagnosis, as identified through a review of papers in this field. Future directions to overcome these challenges are also addressed. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, affecting approximately 3% of the global population and rising to 11% in individuals over 80 years old. The distribution of epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) around the atria plays a significant role in the pathophysiology of AF, yet its regional analysis remains underexplored. This paper introduces an automated pipeline capable of segmenting 14 atrial regions from patient CT angiograms, a notable advancement over previous attempts to automate the creation of synthetic anatomical or physics-based twins. Our fully automatic pipeline requires no human supervision and provides the regional EAT quantification successfully on 91.9% of the analyzed patients for which the LA and its structures were automatically segmented (1797 out of 1954 patients), including the automatic segmentation of the aorta and pericardium to assess EAT volume around the left atrium. By applying principal component analysis of the regional EAT to analyze a separate dataset of 84 individuals who were clinically labeled, we identified a distinct group that contained all the patients with AF. This finding suggests that there is a significant link between the pattern of fat distribution and AF. This novel approach has the potential to enhance our understanding of AF and improve patient outcomes by enabling large-scale, regional fat analysis in an automated manner on all patients with accurate segmentation of left atrial structures. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Ultrasound examinations during pregnancy can detect abnormal fetal development, which is a leading cause of perinatal mortality. In multiple pregnancies, the position of the fetuses may change between examinations. The individual fetus cannot be clearly identified. Fetal re-identification may improve diagnostic capabilities by tracing individual fetal changes. This work evaluates the feasibility of fetal re-identification on FETAL_PLANES_DB, a publicly available dataset of singleton pregnancy ultrasound images. Five dataset subsets with 6,491 images from 1,088 pregnant women and two re-identification frameworks (Torchreid, FastReID) are evaluated. FastReID achieves a mean average precision of 68.77% (68.42%) and mean precision at rank 10 score of 89.60% (95.55%) when trained on images showing the fetal brain (abdomen). Visualization with gradient-weighted class activation mapping shows that the classifiers appear to rely on anatomical features. We conclude that fetal re-identification in ultrasound images may be feasible. However, more work on additional datasets, including images from multiple pregnancies and several subsequent examinations, is required to ensure and investigate performance stability and *** relevance— To date, fetuses in multiple pregnancies cannot be distinguished between ultrasound examinations. This work provides the first evidence for feasibility of fetal re-identification in pregnancy ultrasound images. This may improve diagnostic capabilities in clinical practice in the future, such as longitudinal analysis of fetal changes or abnormalities.

The increasing complexity in software development leads to the necessity for a detailed data analysis. Literature illustrates a stronger research focus on Educational Process Mining (EPM) being applied to the fields of e-learning and professional training. In this work, the opportunities of Process Mining (PM) are further examined by the evaluation of software engineering (SE) courses. The methodology follows the five stages of the L* life cycle model for PM projects using data from software repositories. The event log data was analyzed with the PM tool Disco to examine the students’ work following an agile development process. Since the beginning of the seventeenth century, wheelchairs have been used to transport hospital patients and those with mobility impairments. The power of people is what spreads wheelchairs. Wheelchair users propel themselves forward using their upper bodies or, more commonly, require the assistance of another person to propel them. In this work, we examine how to build an autonomous electric wheelchair for the disabled at the lowest possible cost without sacrificing quality of design or control. This research presents the planning and development of an AI-enhanced electric wheelchair that can be controlled automatically to climb stairs, making it accessible to those with mobility impairments. The chair’s controls allow the user to move it in any direction and raise the landing and staircases to varying heights. The chair’s DC power source (battery used) may be recharged, allowing it to function for an extended period of time. In addition, a safety system was created that monitors and provides feedback on the user’s pulse rate, as well as the wheelchair’s functioning state (including acceleration, climate, and inclination position). This proposed AI based Wheelchair (AIWC) design is suitable for any aged people and the proposed model is cross-validated with the conventional wheelchair design using mobile based operations handling system called Mobile-Wheelchair (MWC) to test the efficiency of the proposed design in clear manner.
