In terms of energy efficiency and computational speed, neuromorphic electronics based on nonvolatile memory devices are expected to be one of most promising hardware candidates for future artificial intelligence (AI). However, catastrophic forgetting, networks rapidly overwriting previously learned weights when learning new tasks, remains a pivotal obstacle in either digital or analog AI chips for unleashing the true power of brainlike computing. To address catastrophic forgetting in the context of online memory storage, a complex synapse model (the Benna-Fusi model) was proposed recently [M. K. Benna and S. Fusi, Nat. Neurosci. 19, 1697 (2016)], the synaptic weight and internal variables of which evolve following diffusion dynamics. In this work, by designing a proton transistor with a series of charge-diffusion-controlled storage components, we have experimentally realized the Benna-Fusi artificial complex synapse. Memory consolidation from coupled storage components is revealed by both numerical simulations and experimental observations. Different memory timescales for the complex synapse are engineered by the diffusion length of charge carriers and the capacity and number of coupled storage components. The advantages of the demonstrated complex synapse for both memory capacity and memory consolidation are revealed by neural network simulations of face-familiarity detection. Our experimental realization of the complex synapse suggests a promising approach to enhance memory capacity and to enable continual learning.

The impression made by a loaded cylindrical flat-end punch on a polymer surface was observed to disappear with time at the same temperature after the load was removed. The depth-time relation appeared to obey second order kinetics. The temperature dependence of the rate constant shows two consecutive processes with activation energies, 906 kJ/mole (between 143 and 147 degrees C) and 91 kJ/mole (between 150 and 160 degrees C) for PC (Tg is at about 146 degrees C) and 440 kJ/mole (between 104 and 110 degrees C) and 95 kJ/mole (between 115 and 140 degrees C) for PMMA (Tg is at about 112 degrees C). These activation energies are probably associated with the motion and annihilation of conformational or structural defects of opposite signs. This kind of shape memory phenomena may be general for all amorphous polymers.

The microstructural features of high-temperature sintered and CaO-MgO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2(CMAS) corroded air plasma sprayed Y_2O_3 stabilized ZrO_2(YSZ) thermal barrier coatings(TBCs) under the thermal gradient condition were comparatively studied. As-sprayed YSZ has a lamellar structure and the lamellae are composed of closely aligned columnar crystals. The sintered and the CMAS corroded YSZ coatings maintain the t'-ZrO_2 phase as the as-sprayed YSZ coating. The sintered YSZ remains the lamellar structure with reduced interlamellar gaps and grains coarsening. After the CMAS corrosion, the top layer of the YSZ coating keeps its lamellar structure consisting of some columnar grains with the CMAS infiltration into the intergrain gaps and the formation of striped Zr_2Y_2 O_7. The typical lamellar structure transforms into more equiaxed grains in the middle and bottom layers of the ceramic coating along with significant infiltration of amorphous CMAS and anorthite formation in the bottom layer owing to the high contents of Ca and Al.

Improved hybrid solar cells consisting of vertical aligned cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanorod arrays and interpenetrating polythiophene (P3HT) have been achieved via modification of CdS nanorod surface by using conjugated N719 dye. The complete infiltration of P3HT between CdS nanorods interspacing was verified by scanning electron microscopy. By employing absorption and photoluminescence spectra, and current-voltage characterization the interaction between N719 molecules and CdS nanorods/P3HT interface was explored, and the role of N719 dye on the improvement of device performance was discussed.
