Au and TiO2 NPs were made using the Laser Ablation of Microparticles Aerosol (LAMA) process, which produced bare (i.e. free of surfactant) Au NPs that were 1 - 10 nm in diameter on the surface of amorphous TiO2 NPs that were ∼50 nm in diameter. The stability of Au nanoparticles (NPs) deposited onto TiO2 nanoparticles was studied using in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Upon exposure to the electron beam, the larger Au NPs were observed to be mobile on the surface of the TiO2 NPs. However, the smallest Au NPs appeared to be pinned to the TiO2 surface and resisted sintering. The morphological stability of the small, isolated Au NPs under electron beam exposure suggests that these particles may also be stable at elevated temperatures and therefore would be suitable as high surface area catalysts for oxidation of CO.
