Peripheral nerve injuries persist as a major clinical issue facing the US population and can be caused by stretch, laceration, or crush injuries. Small nerve gaps are simple to treat, and the nerve stumps can be reattached with sutures. In longer nerve gaps, traditional treatment options consist of autografts, hollow nerve guidance conduits, and, more recently, manufactured fibrous scaffolds. These manufactured scaffolds often incorporate stem cells, growth factors, and/or extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins to better mimic the native environment but can have issues with homogenous cell distribution or uniformly oriented neurite outgrowth in scaffolds without fibrous alignment. Here, we utilize a custom device to fabricate collagen I hydrogels with aligned fibers and encapsulated adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) for potential use as a peripheral nerve repair graft. Analysis of these scaffolds in vitro revealed heightened therapeutic secretome from ASCs, ECM deposition, and dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurite outgrowth along the axis of fiber alignment. Our platform serves as an in vitro testbed platform to assess neuro-regenerative potential of ASCs in aligned collagen fiber scaffolds and may provide guidance on next-generation nerve repair scaffold design. © 2023, The Authors. Antiferromagnet (AFM) has currently participated in the spin-orbit torque (SOT) technology due to its great potential to be applied to the field-free SOT switching and to promote the thermal stability of MRAM. However, the effect of varying AFM ordering on the SOT switching and the associated properties is still not comprehensively understood. This work reports how an AFM ordering modifies the strength of Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya-interaction (DMI) in a heavy metal (Pt)/FM (Co)/AFM (IrMn) trilayer and its effects on SOT switching. Increasing the AFM ordering reflects the enhanced exchange bias through increasing IrMn thickness appears to significantly reduce the DMI strength of the trilayer. Controlling the IrMn thickness appears to serve as a unique switch to activate memristivity/stochasticity in the devices via tailoring AFM ordering on exchange bias: The strong AFM ordering via increasing IrMn thickness enables to increase the stability of multi-levels for SOT switching, which promotes the memristivity for neuromorphic application. On the contrary, the weak AFM ordering via reducing IrMn thickness will lead to significant stochasticity for the physically unclonable functionality. This work demonstrates an intrinsic tuning over the AFM ordering will serve as a switch to turn the SOT device into a stochastic/memristive cell to bridge probabilistic and neuromorphic computing. © 2023 The Authors. Oscillatory Hall effect from magnetoelectronic coupling in flexoelectronic silicon

The magnetoelectronic coupling can be defined as cross-domain coupling between electronic and magnetic properties, where modulation in magnetic properties changes the electronic properties. In this letter, an explicit experimental evidence of magnetoelectronic coupling is presented, which is uncovered from oscillatory Hall effect response in Hall measurement. The strain gradient in a MgO (1.8 nm)/p-Si (∼400 nm) freestanding sample leads to transfer of electrons (∼5×1018 cm-3) from valence to conduction band due to flexoelectronic charge separation in the p-Si layer. The resulting flexoelectronic polarization gives rise to temporal magnetic moment from dynamical multiferroicity. The external magnetic field changes the net temporal magnetic moment, which causes modulations in charge carrier concentration and oscillatory Hall effect. The period of oscillatory Hall response is 1.12 T, which is attributed to the magnitude of temporal magnetic moment. The discovery of oscillatory Hall effect adds a new member to the family of Hall effects. © 2024, CC BY.

The sustainable management of metal-rich industrial wastes, such as electric arc furnace dust (EAFD), remains a critical challenge for the steel industry. Although previous studies have investigated metal recovery routes and their application in functional materials, few have explored the reuse of these wastes as active components in anticorrosive coatings. This work proposes an innovative approach for valorizing EAFD, recovering iron (Fe 2 O 3 ) and zinc (ZnO) oxides through acid leaching, basic precipitation, and heat treatment. After recovery, mixed ZnO/Fe 2 O 3 oxides were prepared in different proportions and incorporated as nanofillers in an epoxy matrix, creating a hybrid coating aimed at protecting carbon steel against corrosion. The obtained materials were characterized by XRF, XRD, FTIR, SEM, and BET analysis, while the mechanical and anticorrosive properties were evaluated by Vickers hardness tests, Potentiodynamic Polarization and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy. After 240 h of immersion in saline solution and 360 h of Salt-spray test, the coating with the highest Fe 2 O 3 content demonstrated superior performance, reducing the corrosion rate by up to 100 times and increasing the load transfer resistance by up to 80 times. The contribution of this study lies in both the proposal of a new cycle for reusing steel waste and in demonstrating a viable route for developing high-performance anticorrosive coatings with potential for industrial application in sectors such as oil and gas. The combination of waste recovery and functional improvement of the material positions this study as a technologically and environmentally relevant solution.

Methylammonium chloride (MACl) is used as a volatile additive in most high-efficiency formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3) perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, MA is known to irreversibly react with FA to form n-methyl formamidinium (nMFA), which is detrimental to the absorber quality. In this work, we explore a series of alternative primary alkylammonium chlorides (RACls) in an antisolvent-free deposition. We analyze ink reactivity toward FA, film crystallinity, photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), and durability under light and heat. We find that the alkyl chain has a significant effect on reaction rate with FA, with isopropylammonium (iPA) showing a 10 times slower reaction rate than MA. Diffraction intensity of the (001) perovskite peak is maximized with ethylammonium (EA) and iPA, then decreases with the increasing alkyl chain length of n-propyl (nPA) and n-butyl (nBA) ammonium. Importantly, films cast from aged solutions containing the alternative RACl additives all formed majority black perovskite α-phase, while the MACl controls did not, highlighting the negative impact of nMFA. PLQY of alternative additives were comparable to pristine MACl and was retained in films made after solution aging. Durability tests of unencapsulated films in inert atmosphere under 0.6-sun illumination and 85°C heating revealed increased stability of the black perovskite α-phase by replacing MA, with iPA and nBA offering the best phase stability. Unoptimized devices prepared with fresh inks containing iPACl deliver performance on par with the MACl control. The results presented herein demonstrate promising alternative volatile additives to replace MACl in FAPbI3-based perovskite solar cells.

In this work, we reported experimental investigations on third-order optical properties of aqueous colloidal dispersions of silver nanocubes (Ag-NCs) and Ag-Au hollow nanostructures. The hollow bimetallic are nanoboxes, that were synthesized by galvanic substitution using silver nanocubes as templates, inserting silver with gold in molar ratios of 1.5 and 3.0 mL. This process adjusted tuning the Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) compared to the original Ag-NCs nanocubes. Femtosecond Z-scan measurements performed at 1040 nm, 350fs and laser intensities from 99.7 - 279 GW/cm2 shows negative nonlinear refraction for both nanocube and nanoboxes colloids, attributed to hot electron generation. Solvent effects are simultaneously suppressed of the nanostructures. On the other hand, the non-linear absorption observed for bimetallic nanoboxes shows the presence of saturated absorption (SA), but the Ag-NCs do not show a non-linear absorption signal. Therefore, our experimental results provide a reliable reference for the application of these bimetallic nanostructures as active media in nonlinear photonic devices. © 2024, The Authors. A novel double-coating technique was employed to encapsulate levofloxacin (LVF), a potent antibacterial drug, using the particles from gas-saturated solutions (PGSS) process to achieve extended release. The primary coating utilized glyceryl tristearate (GT), a lipid with a high melting point (72 °C), followed by a secondary coating with trimyristin (TM), a lipid with a lower melting point (52 °C). For comparison, a single-coating approach was also explored, using the biocompatible polymer poly-(ε-caprolactone) (PCL). The resulting particles were characterized for their shape, size, and LVF encapsulation efficiency, with confirmation of LVF entrapment provided by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X‐ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis. The particles, with an average diameter of 95.3 ± 16.5 μm, exhibited an encapsulation efficiency of up to 92.1 ± 2.5%. Furthermore, in vitro release studies revealed that the double-coated microcapsules effectively suppressed the initial burst release and provided controlled, extended release of LVF (t30D = 36.3%), demonstrating the efficiency of this encapsulation method for prolonged drug delivery.

Effective monitoring of environmental hazardous drug moxifloxacin hydrochloride using silver selenide on octadecyl amine modified reduced graphene oxide composite

The precise detection of antibiotics is very critical. Here, silver selenide (Ag2Se) nanorods are hydrothermally synthesized and ultrasonically treated with rGO surface modified with octadecylamine (rGO-ODA). The optical, structural, morphological, and functional analysis were performed which revealed the orthorhombic pattern of the P2221 E space group, the crystalline purity of Ag2Se, and the substantial composite formation. The morphological studies revealed nanorod like structure of the Ag2Se material and wrinkled sheets of rGO-ODA. A sensor that detects moxifloxacin hydrochloride (MOXH) antibiotic using the cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and UV-Vis absorbance was developed. For DPV analysis, a quite low value for detection limit 12.46 nM was exhibited with 0.199 μM – 425.16 μM linear range, and a sensitivity of 5.0439 μA M−1cm−2. For UV-Vis, the sensor demonstrated a very low limit of detection 17.42 nM over 0.12 μM – 7.7 μM working range. The use of this sensor was validated in real-time analysis with industrial waste water, fish, human blood, and urine samples. The results suggested an excellent rate of analyte recovery and enhanced efficiency for MOXH detection with a potential for commercialization in the future. © 2023
