The paper deals with the space mapping (SM) approach to engineering design optimization. We attempt a theoretical justification of methods that have already proven efficient in solving practical problems, especially in the RF and microwave area. A formal definition of optimization algorithms using surrogate models based on SM technology is given. Convergence conditions for the chosen subclass of algorithms are discussed and explained using a synthetic example, the so-called generalized cheese-cutting problem. An illustrative, circuit-theory based example is also considered.

We present advances in microwave and RF device modeling exploiting space mapping (SM) technology. We propose new SM modeling formulations utilizing input mappings, output mappings, frequency scaling and quadratic approximations. Our aim is to enhance circuit models for statistical analysis and yield-driven design. We illustrate our results using a capacitively-loaded two-section impedance transformer, a single-resonator waveguide filter and a six-section H-plane waveguide filter.

We review the space mapping (SM) technique and the SM-based surrogate (modeling) concept and their applications in engineering design optimization. The aim of SM is to achieve a satisfactory solution with a minimal number of computationally expensive "fine" model evaluations. SM procedures iteratively update and optimize surrogates based on a fast physically-based "coarse" model. Parameter extraction is an essential SM subproblem. It is used to align the surrogate (enhanced coarse model) with the fine model. Novel physical illustrations are presented, including the cheese cutting problem and wedge cutting problem. Significant practical applications are reviewed.
