High-order finite volume and finite element methods offer impressive accuracy and cost efficiency when solving hyperbolic conservation laws with smooth solutions. However, if the solution contains discontinuities, these high-order methods can introduce unphysical oscillations and severe overshoots/undershoots. Slope limiters are an effective remedy, combating these oscillations by preserving monotonicity. Some limiters can even maintain a strict maximum principle in the numerical solution. They can be classified into one of two categories: a priori and a posteriori limiters. The former revises the high-order solution based only on data at the current time tn, while the latter involves computing a candidate solution at tn+1 and iteratively recomputing it until some conditions are satisfied. These two limiting paradigms are available for both finite volume and finite element methods. In this work, we develop a methodology to compare a priori and a posteriori limiters for finite volume solvers at arbitrarily high order. We select the maximum principle preserving scheme presented in [1, 2] as our a priori limited scheme. For a posteriori limiting, we adopt the methodology presented in [3] and search for so-called troubled cells in the candidate solution. We revise them with a robust MUSCL fallback scheme. The linear advection equation is solved in both one and two dimensions and we compare variations of these limited schemes based on their ability to maintain a maximum principle, solution quality over long time integration and computational cost. This analysis reveals a fundamental tradeoff between these three aspects. The high-order a posteriori limited solutions boast great quality at long time-scales, taking full advantage of the sharp gradients of the high-order finite volume method. The weak-field limit of Einstein–Cartan (EC) relativity is studied. The equations of EC theory are rewritten such that they formally resemble those of Einstein General Relativity (EGR);this allows ideas from post-Newtonian theory to be imported without essential change. The equations of motion are then written both at first post-Newtonian (1PN) order and at 1.5PN order. EC theory’s 1PN equations of motion are found to be those of a micropolar/Cosserat elastic medium, along with a decoupled evolution equation for non-classical, spin-related fields. It seems that a necessary condition for these results to hold is that one chooses the non-classical fields to scale with the speed of light in a certain empirically reasonable way. Finally, the 1.5PN equations give greater insight into the coupling between energy-momentum and spin within slowly moving, weakly gravitating matter. Specifically, the weakly relativistic modifications to Cosserat theory involve a gravitational torque and an augmentation of the gravitational force due to a ‘dynamic mass moment density’ with an accompanying ‘dynamic mass moment density flux’, and new forms of linear momentum density captured by a ‘dynamic mass density flux’ and a ‘dynamic momentum density’. A general technique for the generation of canonical channel models and demonstrate the application of the technique to time-frequency and time-scale integral kernel operators is developed. As an example, the derivation of Sayeed/Aazhang's time-frequency canonical channel characterization that forms the basis for the time-frequency RAKE receiver is shown. Then, a canonical time-scale channel model for wideband communication is developed.

Precise determination of pair interactions from pair statistics of many-body systems in and out of equilibrium

The determination of the pair potential v(r) that accurately yields an equilibrium state at positive temperature T with a prescribed pair correlation function g2(r) or corresponding structure factor S(k) in d-dimensional Euclidean space Rd is an outstanding inverse statistical mechanics problem with far-reaching implications. Recently, Zhang and Torquato [Phys. Rev. E 101, 032124 (2020)] conjectured that any realizable g2(r) or S(k) corresponding to a translationally invariant nonequilibrium system can be attained by a classical equilibrium ensemble involving only (up to) effective pair interactions. Testing this conjecture for nonequilibrium systems as well as for nontrivial equilibrium states requires improved inverse methodologies. We have devised an optimization algorithm to precisely determine effective pair potentials that correspond to pair statistics of general translationally invariant disordered many-body equilibrium or nonequilibrium systems at positive temperatures. This methodology utilizes a parameterized family of pointwise basis functions for the potential function whose initial form is informed by small-, intermediate- and large-distance behaviors dictated by statistical-mechanical theory. Subsequently, a nonlinear optimization technique is utilized to minimize an objective function that incorporates both the target pair correlation function g2(r) and structure factor S(k) so that the small intermediate- and large-distance correlations are very accurately captured. To illustrate the versatility and power of our methodology, we accurately determine the effective pair interactions of the following four diverse target systems: (1) Lennard-Jones system in the vicinity of its critical point, (2) liquid under the Dzugutov potential, (3) nonequilibrium random sequential addition packing, and (4) a nonequilibrium hyperuniform “cloaked” uniformly randomized lattice. Studies of random organization models of monodisperse (i.e., identical) spherical particles have shown that a hyperuniform state is achievable when the system goes through an absorbing phase transition to a critical state. Here we investigate to what extent hyperuniformity is preserved when the model is generalized to particles with a size distribution and/or nonspherical shapes. We begin by examining binary disks in two dimensions and demonstrate that their critical states are hyperuniform as two-phase media, but not hyperuniform nor multihyperuniform as point patterns formed by the particle centroids. We further confirm the generality of our findings by studying particles with a continuous size distribution. Finally, to study the effect of rotational degrees of freedom, we extend our model to noncircular particles, namely, hard rectangles with various aspect ratios, including the hard-needle limit. Although these systems exhibit only short-range orientational order, hyperuniformity is still preserved. Our analysis reveals that the redistribution of the "mass" of the particles rather than the particle centroids is central to this dynamical process. The consideration of the "active volume fraction" of generalized random organization models may help to resolve which universality class they belong to and hence may lead to a deeper theoretical understanding of absorbing-state models. Our results suggest that general particle systems subject to random organization can be a robust way to fabricate a wide class of hyperuniform states of matter by tuning the structures via different particle-size and -shape distributions. This in turn potentially enables the creation of multifunctional hyperuniform materials with desirable optical, transport and mechanical properties. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. The growing role of data-driven approaches to scientific discovery has unveiled a large class of models that involve latent transformations with a rigid algebraic constraint. Three-dimensional molecule reconstruction in Cryo-Electron Microscopy (cryo-EM) is a central problem in this class. Despite decades of algorithmic and software development, there is still little theoretical understanding of the sample complexity of this problem, that is, number of images required for 3-D reconstruction. Here we consider multi-reference alignment (MRA), a simple model that captures fundamental aspects of the statistical and algorithmic challenges arising in cryo-EM and related problems. In MRA, an unknown signal is subject to two types of corruption: a latent cyclic shift and the more traditional additive white noise. The goal is to recover the signal at a certain precision from independent samples. While at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the number of observations needed to recover a generic signal is proportional to 1/SNR, we prove that it rises to a surprising 1/SNR3 in the low SNR regime. This precise phenomenon was observed empirically more than twenty years ago for cryo-EM but has remained unexplained to date. Furthermore, our techniques can easily be extended to the heterogeneous MRA model where the samples come from a mixture of signals, as is often the case in applications such as cryo-EM, where molecules may have different conformations. Sensitivity Analysis of Wind Energy Resources with Bayesian non-Gaussian and nonstationary Functional ANOVA

The transition from non-renewable to renewable energies represents a global societal challenge, and developing a sustainable energy portfolio is an especially daunting task for developing countries where little to no information is available regarding the abundance of renewable resources such as wind. Weather model simulations are key to obtain such information when observational data are scarce and sparse over a country as large and geographically diverse as Saudi Arabia. However, output from such models is uncertain, as it depends on inputs such as the parametrization of the physical processes and the spatial resolution of the simulated domain. In such situations, a sensitivity analysis must be performed and the input may have a spatially heterogeneous influence of wind. In this work, we propose a latent Gaussian functional analysis of variance (ANOVA) model that relies on a nonstationary Gaussian Markov random field approximation of a continuous latent process. The proposed approach is able to capture the local sensitivity of Gaussian and non-Gaussian wind characteristics such as speed and threshold exceedances over a large simulation domain, and a continuous underlying process also allows us to assess the effect of different spatial resolutions. Our results indicate that (1) the non-local planetary boundary layer scheme and high spatial resolution are both instrumental in capturing wind speed and energy (especially over complex mountainous terrain), and (2) the impact of planetary boundary layer scheme and resolution on Saudi Arabia’s planned wind farms is small (at most 1.4%). End-to-end quantum machine learning implemented with controlled quantum dynamics

This work presents a hardware-friendly end-to-end quantum machine learning scheme that can be implemented with imperfect near-term intermediate-scale quantum processors. The proposal transforms the machine learning task to the optimization of a quantum control system, which parameterize the learning model by experimentally tunable control variables. Our design also enables automated feature selection by encoding the raw input data to quantum states through agent control variables. Comparing with the gate-based parameterized quantum circuits, the resulting end-to-end quantum learning models is easy to implement as there are only few ad-hoc parameters to be determined by the designer. Numerical simulations on the benchmarking MNIST dataset without down-sampling the images demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve comparable high performance with only 3-5 qubits than known quantum machine learning models. Rate and diversity impose a fundamental trade-off in space-time coding. High-rate space-time codes come at a cost of lower diversity, and high reliability (diversity) implies a lower rate. We explore a different point of view where we design high-rate space-time codes that have a high-diversity code embedded within them. This allows a form of communication where the high-rate code opportunistically takes advantage of good channel realizations whereas the embedded high-diversity code ensures that at least part of the information is received reliably. We explore this point of view with design issues, along with some preliminary progress on code constructions and some information-theoretic considerations.

Assessing the reliability of wind power operations under a changing climate with a non-Gaussian bias correction

Facing increasing societal and economic pressure, many countries have established strategies to develop renewable energy portfolios, whose penetration in the market can alleviate the dependence on fossil fuels. In the case of wind, there is a fundamental question related to the resilience, and hence profitability, of future wind farms to a changing climate, given that current wind turbines have lifespans of up to thirty years. In this work we develop a new non-Gaussian method to adjust assimilated observational data to simulations and to estimate future wind, predicated on a trans-Gaussian transformation and a cluster-wise minimization of the Kullback-Leibler divergence. Future winds abundance will be determined for Saudi Arabia, a country with a recently established plan to develop a portfolio of up to 16 GW of wind energy. Further, we estimate the change in profits over future decades using additional high-resolution simulations, an improved method for vertical wind extrapolation and power curves from a collection of popular wind turbines. We find an overall increase in daily profit of $272,000 for the wind energy market for the optimal locations for wind farming in the country. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.
