Nucleation of various ordered phases in block copolymers is studied by examining the free-energy landscape within the self-consistent field theory. The minimum energy path (MEP) connecting two ordered phases is computed using a recently developed string method. The shape, size, and free-energy barrier of critical nuclei are obtained from the MEP, providing information about the emergence of a stable ordered phase from a metastable phase. In particular, structural evolution of embryonic gyroid nucleus is predicted to follow two possible MEPs, revealing an interesting transition pathway with an intermediate perforated layered structure.

During the last few years, neural machine translation (NMT) as a notable branch of machine translation has been increasing its popularity both in research and in practice. In particular, neural machine translation between English and Chinese, which are two of the most widely used languages all over the world, is receiving more and more attention. In this review, we discuss current mainstream models for neural machine translation, including recurrent neural network (RNN), convolution neural network (CNN), and self-attention network (SAN) or transformer. The mechanisms of these models are illustrated. Moreover, examples of studies and applications of them are analyzed. In addition, comparisons on the performance of different models are implemented.

The question of which global minima are accessible by a stochastic gradient decent (SGD) algorithm with specific learning rate and batch size is studied from the perspective of dynamical stability. The concept of non-uniformity is introduced, which, together with sharpness, characterizes the stability property of a global minimum and hence the accessibility of a particular SGD algorithm to that global minimum. In particular, this analysis shows that learning rate and batch size play different roles in minima selection. Extensive empirical results seem to correlate well with the theoretical findings and provide further support to these claims.
