A spectral-infinite-element solution of Poisson’s equation: An application to self gravity

We solve Poisson’s equation by combining a spectral-element method with a mapped infinite-element method. We focus on problems in geostatics and geodynamics, where Earth’s gravitational field is determined by Poisson’s equation inside the Earth and Laplace’s equation in the rest of space. Spectral elements are used to capture the internal field, and infinite elements are used to represent the external field. To solve the weak form of Poisson/Laplace equation, we use Gauss-Legendre-Lobatto quadrature in spectral elements inside the domain of interest. Outside the domain, we use Gauss-Radau quadrature in the infinite direction, and Gauss-Legendre-Lobatto quadrature in the other directions. We illustrate the efficiency and accuracy of the method by comparing the gravitational fields of a homogeneous sphere and the Preliminary Reference Earth Model (PREM) with (semi-)analytical solutions. We introduce a variation of metric dimension, called the multiset dimension. The representation multiset of a vertex v with respect to W (which is a subset of the vertex set of a graph G), rm(v|W), is defined as a multiset of distances between v and the vertices in W. If rm(u|W) ≠ rm(v|W) for every pair of distinct vertices u and v, then W is called an m-resolving set of G. If G has an m-resolving set, then the cardinality of a smallest m-resolving set is called the multiset dimension of G, denoted by md(G). If G does not contain an m-resolving set, we write md(G) = ∞. In this paper we present basic results on the multiset dimension. We obtain some (sharp) bounds for multiset dimension of arbitrary graphs in term of its metric dimension, order, or diameter. We provide some necessary conditions for a graph to have finite multiset dimension, with an example of an infinite family of graphs where those necessary conditions are also sufficient. We also show that the multiset dimension of any graph other than a path is at least 3 and finally we provide two families of graphs having the multiset dimension 3.05C35, 05C12 Copyright © 2017, The Authors. Scientific collaboration has been a critical aspect of the development of all fields of science, particularly clinical medicine. It is well understood that myriads of benefits can be yielded by interdisciplinary and international collaboration. For instance, our rapidly growing knowledge on COVID-19 and vaccine development could not be attained without expanded collaborative activities. However, achieving fruitful results requires mastering specific tactics in collaborative efforts. These activities can enhance our knowledge, which ultimately benefits society. In addition to tackling the issue of the invisible border between different countries, institutes, and disciplines, the border between the scientific community and society needs to be addressed as well. International and transdisciplinary approaches can potentially be the best solution for bridging science and society. The Universal Scientific Education and Research Network (USERN) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization and network to promote professional, scientific research and education worldwide. The fifth annual congress of USERN was held in Tehran, Iran, in a hybrid manner on November 7-10, 2020, with key aims of bridging science to society and facilitating borderless science. Among speakers of the congress, a group of top scientists unanimously agreed on The USERN 2020 consensus, which is drafted with the goal of connecting society with scientific scholars and facilitating international and interdisciplinary scientific activities in all fields, including clinical medicine.

Deuterons are atomic nuclei composed of a neutron and a proton held together by the strong interaction. Unbound ensembles composed of a deuteron and a third nucleon have been investigated in the past using scattering experiments, and they constitute a fundamental reference in nuclear physics to constrain nuclear interactions and the properties of nuclei. In this work, K+−d and p−d femtoscopic correlations measured by the ALICE Collaboration in proton-proton (pp) collisions at s=13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented. It is demonstrated that correlations in momentum space between deuterons and kaons or protons allow us to study three-hadron systems at distances comparable with the proton radius. The analysis of the K+−d correlation shows that the relative distances at which deuterons and protons or kaons are produced are around 2 fm. The analysis of the p−d correlation shows that only a full three-body calculation that accounts for the internal structure of the deuteron can explain the data. In particular, the sensitivity of the observable to the short-range part of the interaction is demonstrated. These results indicate that correlations involving light nuclei in pp collisions at the LHC will also provide access to any three-body system in the strange and charm sectors.

DeePMD-kit: A deep learning package for many-body potential energy representation and molecular dynamics

Recent developments in many-body potential energy representation via deep learning have brought new hopes to addressing the accuracy-versus-efficiency dilemma in molecular simulations. Here we describe DeePMD-kit, a package written in Python/C++ that has been designed to minimize the effort required to build deep learning based representation of potential energy and force field and to perform molecular dynamics. Potential applications of DeePMD-kit span from finite molecules to extended systems and from metallic systems to chemically bonded systems. DeePMD-kit is interfaced with TensorFlow, one of the most popular deep learning frameworks, making the training process highly automatic and efficient. On the other end, DeePMD-kit is interfaced with high-performance classical molecular dynamics and quantum (path-integral) molecular dynamics packages, i.e., LAMMPS and the i-PI, respectively. Thus, upon training, the potential energy and force field models can be used to perform efficient molecular simulations for different purposes. As an example of the many potential applications of the package, we use DeePMD-kit to learn the interatomic potential energy and forces of a water model using data obtained from density functional theory. We demonstrate that the resulted molecular dynamics model reproduces accurately the structural information contained in the original model. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The first measurement of event-by-event antideuteron number fluctuations in high energy heavy-ion collisions is presented. The measurements are carried out at midrapidity (|η|<0.8) as a function of collision centrality in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector. A significant negative correlation between the produced antiprotons and antideuterons is observed in all collision centralities. The results are compared with a state-of-the-art coalescence calculation. While it describes the ratio of higher order cumulants of the antideuteron multiplicity distribution, it fails to describe quantitatively the magnitude of the correlation between antiproton and antideuteron production. On the other hand, thermal-statistical model calculations describe all the measured observables within uncertainties only for correlation volumes that are different with respect to those describing proton yields and a similar measurement of net-proton number fluctuations.

In this paper we consider a system of dynamical sampling, i.e. sampling a signal f that evolves in time under the action of an evolution operator A. We discuss the error in the recovery of the original signal when the samples are corrupted by additive, independent and identically distributed (i.i.d) noise. We focus on the study of the mean squared error E(‖ε_n‖_2~2) between the original signal and the reconstructed signal obtained by solving a least squares problem. In the theoretical part, we give a formula for E(‖ε_n‖_2~2) and prove that E(‖ε_n‖_2~2) decreases as the number of the samples increases. In addition, we discuss several numerical experiments that verify the theoretical results.

Hypomethylating agents are frontline therapies for myelodysplastic neoplasms (MDS), yet clinical responses remain unpredictable. We conducted a phase 2 trial comparing injectable and oral azacitidine (AZA) administered over one or three weeks per four-week cycle, with the primary objective of investigating whether response is linked to in vivo drug incorporation or DNA hypomethylation. Our findings show that injection results in higher drug incorporation, but lower DNA demethylation per cycle, while global DNA methylation levels in mononuclear cells are comparable between responders and non-responders. However, hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) from responders exhibit distinct baseline and early treatment-induced CpG methylation changes at regulatory regions linked to tissue patterning, cell migration, and myeloid differentiation. By cycle six—when clinical responses typically emerge—further differential hypomethylation in responder HSPCs suggests marrow adaptation as a driver of improved hematopoiesis. These findings indicate that intrinsic baseline and early drug-induced epigenetic differences in HSPCs may underlie the variable clinical response to AZA in MDS. © The Author(s) 2025.
