This research introduces a biodegradable smart packaging film designed for real-time freshness monitoring of shrimp, incorporating zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and anthocyanin extracted from Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. as a pH-responsive indicator. The film matrix, composed of cassava starch, chitosan, and glycerin, was reinforced with varying concentrations of ZnO (0 %, 6 %, and 10 %). Structural characterization via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the successful incorporation of ZnO into the biopolymer matrix. Notably, the film containing 6 % ZnO exhibited the highest crystallinity index (12.23 %) compared to the control (10.29 %) and the 10 % ZnO variant (10.81 %). Mechanical property assessments indicated that the 6 % ZnO film demonstrated superior tensile strength (0.78 MPa) and Young's modulus (2.84 MPa). However, increasing the ZnO content resulted in a decrease in elongation at break, from 41.52 % in the control to 27.65 % in the 10 % ZnO film. Water interaction analyses revealed improved water resistance with ZnO incorporation, as evidenced by a reduction in water solubility from 38.12 % (control) to 28.45 % (10 % ZnO). Biodegradation assays showed a slower degradation rate in ZnO-reinforced films (56.42 % for 6 % ZnO and 49.87 % for 10 % ZnO) compared to the control (68.15 %) over 15 days, likely attributable to the hydrophobic nature of ZnO nanoparticles. Functionally, the film demonstrated effective spoilage detection through visible colorimetric transitions, shifting from reddish-purple to bluish-green within 24 h of shrimp storage, corresponding to pH changes associated with degradation. Overall, the findings underscore the potential of ZnO-reinforced, starch-based films as eco-friendly and smart packaging materials for enhancing food safety and quality monitoring.

The transgenic sugarcane overexpressing SoSPS1 gene increased sugar content which may alter the root exudation that interact with soil rhizosphere microorganism. The microbial plays an important role in biochemical cycling and nutrient transformation in the soil. Therefore, it is important to investigate the potential risk of the transgenic sugarcane on soil ecosystem. This study is designed to evaluate the impact of overexpressing gene for sucrose-phosphate synthesis (SoSPS1) on the bacterial diversity, enzyme activity and nutrient contents. The transgenic sugarcane showed no significant difference in the population of culturable bacteria in the soil rhizosphere compared to non-transgenic counterpart. The populations of total, nitrogen-fixing and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria were similar in transgenic and non-transgenic sugarcane, although the bacterial population tends to increase at later sugarcane growth stage may due to the rise in nutrition from the root exudation. The PCR analysis showed no detection of horizontal gene flow in the bacteria. However, urease activity was significantly decreased in the transgenic sugarcane concomitant with lower nitrogen content in the soil rhizosphere at a later growth stage might due to the transgenic sugarcane lines increased nitrogen absorption for higher growth rate. Furthermore, the nutrient contents, such as organic carbon, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and calcium, slightly varied in the soil rhizosphere but did not affected by the transgenic sugarcane. The results suggested that the transgenic sugarcane overexpressing SoSPS1 gene may not affect the bacterial diversity, nutrient contents and soil ecosystem. © 2020, Korean Society of Crop Science (KSCS).

Traditional fermented food as a special delicacy is one of the elements of culinary diversity found in many regions of Indonesia. This type of food is closely related to the customs and surrounding environment, displaying the characteristics of each region and ethnicity. Maluku is one of the regions located in Eastern Indonesia. Ina sua is a simple and traditional fermented food made from fish using salt as a basic ingredient, commonly eaten at a variety of traditional events in Central Maluku, especially in Teon Nila Serua (TNS). Ina sua is made to be stored and consumed during a time when fish is not available and when there are community activities such as birthdays and traditional events. In making Ina sua, fish are salted with salt granules and stored for a certain time. Therefore, this food is famous for its unique taste produced by the fermentation component. In this article, the origin of Ina sua, its method of preparation, and the scientific perspectives surrounding it are discussed. © 2020 The Author(s).

Fungi and termite coexisted each other and have diverse symbiotic relationship in tropical forest. This research aims to determine the fungus found on termite nests in Suaq Balimbing Research Station so it can be used that as initial information in developing environmentally friendly termite control. The method used for collecting samples of fungus is a Standarized Sampling Protocol and for identification used slide culture method. The results showed that 5 of 12 termites nest are invaded by fungi. Based on macroscopic and microscopic observation, fungus species that obtained from termite nests are 2 species, namely: Penicillium sp.1, Trichoderma sp. 1 © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Geothermal energy is both a clean and sustainable energy source that contributes to economic growth (GDP) and environmentally friendly, as it releases much less harmful greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than fossil fuels. This study presents a novel perspective by examining the dynamic impact of geothermal energy on GDP and GHG emissions in both developing and developed countries from 2000 to 2019. By employing Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) estimations, our study demonstrates a negative impact of geothermal energy on short-run GDP but also proves to be a positive contributor to long-run GDP, particularly in developed countries. Additionally, our study unveils a noteworthy discovery that geothermal energy has a positive effect on GHG levels in both country groups over the long run, although the coefficient is lower in developed countries. These findings are robust and confirmed through Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) and Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS) techniques. The ARDL findings are justified by the Dumitrescu Hurlin (D-H) causality model, indicating the existence of unidirectional causality from GHG emissions to geothermal energy. Based on this empirical evidence, we suggest policymakers support geothermal energy projects through streamlined processes, incentives, and ongoing policy reviews for environmental sustainability and economic growth. © 2024 The Author(s)

Exclusion Volumes of Convex Bodies in High Space Dimensions: Applications to Virial Coefficients and Continuum Percolation

Using the concepts of mixed volumes and quermassintegrals of convex geometry, we derive an exact formula for the exclusion volume vex(K) for a general convex body K that applies in any space dimension. While our main interests concern the rotationally-averaged exclusion volume of a convex body with respect to another convex body, we also describe some results for the exclusion volumes for convex bodies with the same orientation. We show that the sphere minimizes the dimensionless exclusion volume vex(K)/v(K) among all convex bodies, whether randomly oriented or uniformly oriented, for any d, where v(K) is the volume of K. When the bodies have the same orientation, the simplex maximizes the dimensionless exclusion volume for any d with a large-d asymptotic scaling behavior of 22d/d3/2, which is to be contrasted with the corresponding scaling of 2d for the sphere. We present explicit formulas for quermassintegrals W0(K), . . ., Wd(K) for many different nonspherical convex bodies, including cubes, parallelepipeds, regular simplices, cross-polytopes, cylinders, spherocylinders, ellipsoids as well as lower-dimensional bodies, such as hyperplates and line segments. These results are utilized to determine the rotationally-averaged exclusion volume vex(K) for these convex-body shapes for dimensions 2 through 12. While the sphere is the shape possessing the minimal dimensionless exclusion volume, we show that, among the convex bodies considered that are sufficiently compact, the simplex possesses the maximal vex(K)/v(K) with a scaling behavior of 21.6618...d. Subsequently, we apply these results to determine the corresponding second virial coefficient B2(K) of the aforementioned hard hyperparticles. Our results are also applied to compute estimates of the continuum percolation threshold ηc derived previously by the authors for systems of identical overlapping convex bodies. Scalable multiscale-spectral GFEM with an application to composite aero-structures

In this paper, the first large-scale application of multiscale-spectral generalized finite element methods (MS-GFEM) to composite aero-structures is presented. The crucial novelty lies in the introduction of A-harmonicity in the local approximation spaces, which in contrast to [Babuska, Lipton, Multiscale Model. Simul. 9, 2011] is enforced more efficiently via a constraint in the local eigenproblems. This significant modification leads to excellent approximation properties, which turn out to be essential to capture accurately material strains and stresses with a low dimensional approximation space, hence maximising model order reduction. The implementation of the framework in the Distributed and Unified Numerics Environment (DUNE) software package, as well as a detailed description of all components of the method are presented and exemplified on a composite laminated beam under compressive loading. The excellent parallel scalability of the method, as well as its superior performance compared to the related, previously introduced GenEO method are demonstrated on two realistic application cases, including a C-shaped wing spar with complex geometry. Further, by allowing low-cost approximate solves for closely related models or geometries this efficient, novel technology provides the basis for future applications in optimisation or uncertainty quantification on challenging problems in composite aero-structures. The quadratic-quadratic regulator problem: Approximating feedback controls for quadratic-in-state nonlinear systems

Feedback control problems involving autonomous quadratic systems are prevalent, yet there are only a limited number of software tools available for approximating their solution due to the complexity of the problem. This paper represents a step forward in the special case where both the state equation and the control costs are quadratic. As it represents the natural extension of the linear-quadratic regulator (LQR) problem, we describe this setting as the quadratic-quadratic regulator (QQR) problem. This is significantly more challenging and holds the LQR as special case that must be solved along the way. We describe an algorithm that exploits the structure of the QQR problem that arises when implementing Al’Brekht’s method. This approach is amenable to feedback laws with low degree polynomials but have a relatively modest model dimension that could be achieved by modern model reduction methods. This problem has an elegant formulation and a solution that introduces several linear systems where the structure suggests modern tensor-based linear solvers. We demonstrate this algorithm on a suite of random test problems then apply it to a distributed parameter control problem that fits the QQR framework. Lilith is a public Python library for constraining new physics from Higgs signal strength measurements. Version 2.0 of Lilith comes with an extensive XML database which includes the ATLAS and CMS Run 2 Higgs results for 36/fb, in addition the the Run 1 results. Both the code and the database were extended from the ordinary Gaussian approximation employed in Lilith-1.1 to using variable Gaussian and Poisson likelihoods. Moreover, Lilith-2 can make use of correlation matrices of arbitrary dimension. We will report on these novelties and ongoing developments. The importance of how correlations and uncertainties are treated will be demonstrated by means of detailed validations of the implemented experimental results. Moreover, we show the effects for global fits of reduced Higgs couplings, 2HDMs of Type I and Type II, and invisible Higgs decays. Emergent spaces for coupled oscillators

Systems of coupled dynamical units (e.g. oscillators or neurons) are known to exhibit complex, emergent behaviors that may be simplified through coarse-graining: a process in which one discovers coarse variables and derives equations for their evolution. Such coarse-graining procedures often require extensive experience and/or a deep understanding of the system dynamics. In this paper we present a systematic, data-driven approach to discovering "bespoke" coarse variables based on manifold learning algorithms. We illustrate this methodology with the classic Kuramoto phase oscillator model, and demonstrate how our manifold learning technique can successfully identify a coarse variable that is one-to-one with the established Kuramoto order parameter. We then introduce an extension of our coarse-graining methodology which enables us to learn evolution equations for the discovered coarse variables via an artificial neural network architecture templated on numerical time integrators (initial value solvers). This approach allows us to learn accurate approximations of time derivatives of state variables from sparse flow data, and hence discover useful approximate differential equation descriptions of their dynamic behavior. We demonstrate this capability by learning ODEs that agree with the known analytical expression for the Kuramoto order parameter dynamics at the continuum limit. We then show how this approach can also be used to learn the dynamics of coarse variables discovered through our manifold learning methodology. In both of these examples, we compare the results of our neural network based method to typical finite differences complemented with geometric harmonics. Finally, we present a series of computational examples illustrating how a variation of our manifold learning methodology can be used to discover sets of "effective" parameters, reduced parameter combinations, for multi-parameter models with complex coupling.
