This study investigates the preferences and willingness of residents, including local and foreign residents, in the Bali metropolitan area to participate in various waste management initiatives aimed at promoting a circular bioeconomy. Bali, a major tourist center in the Global South, presents unique challenges and opportunities for sustainable waste management. Using a choice experiment framework, we explored preferences for managing paper, food, and garden waste through different scenarios. Scenario 1 focused on collecting and separating waste to support existing infrastructure, Scenario 2 emphasized source reduction and participation, and Scenario 3 integrated a comprehensive circular economy approach. The study reveals significant support for comprehensive waste management practices, with high marginal willingness to participate values for initiatives such as collecting and processing paper waste for energy conversion, independent composting of food waste, and community-based composting of garden waste. These findings highlight the importance of community engagement and tailored strategies in developing sustainable waste management programs. The results provide valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders to design effective circular bioeconomy policies that enhance local economic self-sufficiency and contribute to sustainable development goals. © 2025 The Authors

Adaptive and optimized COVID-19 vaccination strategies across geographical regions and age groups

We evaluate the efficiency of various heuristic strategies for allocating vaccines against COVID-19 and compare them to strategies found using optimal control theory. Our approach is based on a mathematical model which tracks the spread of disease among different age groups and across different geographical regions, and we introduce a method to combine age-specific contact data to geographical movement data. As a case study, we model the epidemic in the population of mainland Finland utilizing mobility data from a major telecom operator. Our approach allows to determine which geographical regions and age groups should be targeted first in order to minimize the number of deaths. In the scenarios that we test, we find that distributing vaccines demographically and in an age-descending order is not optimal for minimizing deaths and the burden of disease. Instead, more lives could be saved by using strategies which emphasize high-incidence regions and distribute vaccines in parallel to multiple age groups. The level of emphasis that high-incidence regions should be given depends on the overall transmission rate in the population. This observation highlights the importance of updating the vaccination strategy when the effective reproduction number changes due to the general contact patterns changing and new virus variants entering. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Lévy Light Cones and Critical Causality in Fractional Multiscale Quantum Ising Models

We study causality and criticality in a one-dimensional fractional multiscale transverse-field Ising model, where fractional derivatives generate long range interactions beyond the scope of standard power laws. Such fractional responses are common in classical systems including the anomalous stress–strain behaviour of viscoelastic polymers, Lévy-like contaminant transport in heterogeneous porous media, and the non-Debye dielectric relaxation of glassy dielectrics. Furthermore, these unique interactions can be implemented in current quantum information architectures, with intriguing consequences for the many-body dynamics. Using a truncated Jordan-Wigner approach, we show that in the long wavelength limit of the mean field, the dynamical critical exponent is set by the fractional order q as z = q/2. To probe genuine many-body dynamics, we apply matrix-product-state simulations with the time-dependent variational principle adapted to nonlocal couplings. Tracking the entanglement-entropy light cone and performing finite-size scaling of the many-body gap for 0 1/z and classical Lévy flights whose mean-square displacement grows as t2/q provides a direct physical link between fractional interactions and Lévy statistics. Fractional derivatives therefore offer a unified framework in which short-range, power-law, and frustrated long-range interactions emerge as limiting cases, enabling controlled exploration of nonlocal causality bounds and exotic entanglement dynamics within current quantum information platforms. © 2025, CC BY.

We present BEAST DB, an open-source database comprised of ab initio electrochemical data computed using grand-canonical density functional theory in implicit solvent at consistent calculation parameters. The database contains over 20,000 surface calculations and covers a broad set of heterogenous catalyst materials and electrochemical reactions. Calculations were performed at self-consistent fixed potential as well as constant charge to facilitate comparisons to the computational hydrogen electrode. This article presents common use cases of the database to rationalize trends in catalyst activity, screen catalyst material spaces, understand elementary mechanistic steps, analyze electronic structure, and train machine learning models to predict higher fidelity properties. Users can interact graphically with the database by querying for individual calculations to gain granular understanding of reaction steps or by querying for an entire reaction pathway on a given material using an interactive reaction pathway tool. BEAST DB will be periodically updated, with planned future updates to include advanced electronic structure data, surface speciation studies, and greater reaction coverage. Overdamped dynamics of a Brownian particle levitated in a Paul trap

We study the dynamics of the center of mass of a Brownian particle levitated in a Paul trap. We mostly focus on the overdamped regime in the context of levitodynamics, comparing theory with numerical simulations and experimental data from our Paul trap. We provide an exact analytical solution to the stochastic equation of motion, expressions for the standard deviation of the motion, and thermalization times by using the WKB method under two different limits. Finally, we prove that the power spectral density of the motion can be approximated by that of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process and use the found expression to calibrate the motion of a trapped particle.

Manifestations of metastable criticality in the long-range structure of model water glasses

Much attention has been devoted to water’s metastable phase behavior, including polyamorphism (multiple amorphous solid phases), and the hypothesized liquid-liquid transition and associated critical point. However, the possible relationship between these phenomena remains incompletely understood. Using molecular dynamics simulations of the realistic TIP4P/2005 model, we found a striking signature of the liquid-liquid critical point in the structure of water glasses, manifested as a pronounced increase in long-range density fluctuations at pressures proximate to the critical pressure. By contrast, these signatures were absent in glasses of two model systems that lack a critical point. We also characterized the departure from equilibrium upon vitrification via the non-equilibrium index;water-like systems exhibited a strong pressure dependence in this metric, whereas simple liquids did not. These results reflect a surprising relationship between the metastable equilibrium phenomenon of liquid-liquid criticality and the non-equilibrium structure of glassy water, with implications for our understanding of water phase behavior and glass physics. This paper addresses the use of data-driven evolving techniques applied to fault prognostics. In such problems, accurate predictions of multiple steps ahead are essential for the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) estimation of a given asset. The fault prognostics’ solutions must be able to model the typical nonlinear behavior of the degradation processes of these assets, and be adaptable to each unit’s particularities. In this context, the Evolving Fuzzy Systems (EFSs) are models capable of representing such behaviors, in addition of being able to deal with non-stationary behavior, also present in these problems. Moreover, a methodology to recursively track the model’s estimation error is presented as a way to quantify uncertainties that are propagated in the long-term predictions. The well-established NASA’s Li-ion batteries data set is used to evaluate the models. The experiments indicate that generic EFSs can take advantage of both historical and stream data to estimate the RUL and its uncertainty. © 2021, CC BY-NC-SA.

Uniformly Accurate Machine Learning Based Hydrodynamic Models for Kinetic Equations

A new framework is introduced for constructing interpretable and truly reliable reduced models for multi-scale problems in situations without scale separation. Hydrodynamic approximation to the kinetic equation is used as an example to illustrate the main steps and issues involved. To this end, a set of generalized moments are constructed first through an autoencoder to optimally represent the underlying velocity distribution. The well-known closure problem is then solved with the aim of best capturing the associated dynamics of the kinetic equation. The issue of physical constraints such as Galilean invariance is addressed and an active learning procedure is introduced to help ensure that the data set used is representative enough. The reduced system takes the form of the conventional moment systems and works regardless of the numerical discretization used. Numerical results are presented for the BGK model. We demonstrate that the reduced model achieves a uniform accuracy in a wide range of Knudsen numbers spanning from the hydrodynamic limit to free molecular flow. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. In this work, plasma characteristics in terms of temperature and electron density of a plasma of the tsunami impacted soil sample induced by a transversely excited atmospheric carbon dioxide (TEA-CO2) LIBS was studied. Practically, the tsunami impacted soil samples was taken from at the worst affected area by the giant tsunami, Banda Aceh city, Aceh province, Indonesia. The generated plasma has been produced after TEA-CO2 pulses laser was targeted onto sample placed on a sample holder in air surrounding gas. The emission spectral lines emitted from the plasma region collected using system of an optical multichannel analyser (OMA) allowed atomic emission lines could be clearly identified. The temperature of plasma was estimateed through the method of Boltzmann plot, while the plasma electron density has been obtained by method of Saha-Boltzmann using spectral lines of calcium both atomic and ionic spectral lines. As results, the plasma temperature and electron density produced were T = 8691 K and 5,2 × 1015 cm−3, respectively. Generally, the plasma temperature and density electron obtained are fit to the Maxwell distribution criteria kT <50,000 and Mcwhriter’s criteria (Ne >1.6×1012 T½ (ΔE)3) for plasma laser in state of local thermal equilibrium LTE).

Administration of postpartum care has been performed in line with health care standards. Unfortunately the health service medical record data is still *** results in delays in establishing a diagnosis and providing therapy which results in a worsening of the postpartum mother's *** paper proposes a web-based information system that may become one solution in solving the remaining issues in postpartum care. The system developed here is expected to improve health care quality with better data completion of postpartum mothers and access to them. The system developed here is web-based, in that it applies the rule-based artificial intelligence system. Input of the system are results of physical examination performed by medical professionals. Then processed using the rule-based algorithm to produce diagnosis and proper recommendation. This research is quasi-experimental using posttest only with control group. There were 40 were categorized into intervention group (n=20) who used the information system and control group (n=20) who used the present system endorsed by the government.. The rule-based algorithm in the information system uses validation from experts. Results show that the information system developed here is capable of solving the issue of incomprehensive data, as well as effectiveness in providing postpartum care. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.
