The immersed finite element-finite difference (IFED) method is a computational approach to modeling interactions between a fluid and an immersed structure. The IFED method uses a finite element (FE) method to approximate the stresses and forces on a structural mesh and a finite difference (FD) method to approximate the momentum of the entire fluid-structure system on a Cartesian grid. The fundamental approach used by this method follows the immersed boundary framework for modeling fluid-structure interaction (FSI), in which a force spreading operator prolongs structural forces to a Cartesian grid, and a velocity interpolation operator restricts a velocity field defined on that grid back onto the structural mesh. With an FE structural mechanics framework, force spreading first requires that the force itself be projected onto the finite element space. Similarly, velocity interpolation requires projecting velocity data onto the FE basis functions. Consequently, evaluating either coupling operator requires solving a matrix equation at every time step. Mass lumping, in which the projection matrices are replaced by diagonal approximations, has the potential to accelerate this method considerably. This paper provides both numerical and computational analyses of the effects of this replacement for evaluating the force projection and for the IFED coupling operators. Constructing the coupling operators also requires determining the locations on the structure mesh where the forces and velocities are sampled. Here we show that sampling the forces and velocities at the nodes of the structural mesh is equivalent to using lumped mass matrices in the IFED coupling operators. A key theoretical result of our analysis is that if both of these approaches are used together, the IFED method permits the use of lumped mass matrices derived from nodal quadrature rules for any standard interpolatory element. In this study, N-Structured based InAs/AlSb/GaSb Type-II Superlattice pbin type detector structures are investigated. These systems make absorption in infrared region in electromagnetic spectrum as detectors. Structural characterization of these systems is aimed. n-type GaSb is used as the substrate. InAs/AlSb/GaSb-based repetitive SL layers are formed as n-layer, i-layer, p-layer and p-contact layer from the bottom InAsSb layer to the top GaSb cap layer for 120, 300, 15 and 80 periods, respectively. Structural characterization of all layers is made by using SIMS and XRD systems analyses. The structural depth profile of the SL layers has been presented comparatively through SIMS analysis. The interfacial transitions observed in the depth profile are consistent with the designed T2SL layers. By using XRD characterization, crystal quality parameters, lattice constants and periodicity and deviation of super lattice peak from substrate are determined. Such dislocation density and strain are measured AS 7.85x107cm-2 and 6.4x10-3 nm, respectively. SEM analysis is used to examine top layer morphology and cross-section of the structure. The cross-sectional measurements allowed the observation of interfacial transitions within the SL structure. In this study, super lattice with high crystal quality is achieved and results show that T2SL detector structures are succeeded. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In terms of energy efficiency and computational speed, neuromorphic electronics based on non-volatile memory devices is expected to be one of most promising hardware candidates for future artificial intelligence (AI). However, catastrophic forgetting, networks rapidly overwriting previously learned weights when learning new tasks, remains as a pivotal hurdle in either digital or analog AI chips for unleashing the true power of brain-like computing. To address catastrophic forgetting in the context of online memory storage, a complex synapse model (the Benna-Fusi model) has been proposed recently[1], whose synaptic weight and internal variables evolve following a diffusion dynamics. In this work, by designing a proton transistor with a series of charge-diffusion-controlled storage components, we have experimentally realized the Benna-Fusi artificial complex synapse. The memory consolidation from coupled storage components is revealed by both numerical simulations and experimental observations. Different memory timescales for the complex synapse are engineered by the diffusion length of charge carriers, the capacity and number of coupled storage components. The advantage of the demonstrated complex synapse in both memory capacity and memory consolidation is revealed by neural network simulations of face familiarity detection. Our experimental realization of the complex synapse suggests a promising approach to enhance memory capacity and to enable continual learning. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Antigenic cooperation in Viral Populations: Transformation of Functions of Intra-Host Viral Variants

In this paper we study intra-host viral adaptation by antigenic cooperation - a mechanism of immune escape that serves as an alternative to the standard mechanism of escape by continuous genomic diversification and allows to explain a number of experimental observations associated with the establishment of chronic infections by highly mutable viruses. Within this mechanism, the topology of a cross-immunoreactivity network forces intra-host viral variants to specialize for complementary roles and adapt to host's immune response as a quasi-social ecosystem. Here we study dynamical changes in immune adaptation caused by evolutionary and epidemiological events. First, we show that the emergence of a viral variant with altered antigenic features may result in a rapid re-arrangement of the viral ecosystem and a change in the roles played by existing viral variants. In particular, it may push the population under immune escape by genomic diversification towards the stable state of adaptation by antigenic cooperation. Next, we study the effect of a viral transmission between two chronically infected hosts, which results in merging of two intra-host viral populations in the state of stable immune-adapted equilibrium. In this case, we also describe how the newly formed viral population adapts to the host's environment by changing the functions of its members. The results are obtained analytically for minimal cross-immunoreactivity networks and numerically for larger populations. © 2022, CC BY.

In this paper, a multiscale boundary condition for the discrete unified gas kinetic scheme (DUGKS) is developed for gas flows in all flow regimes. Based on the discrete Maxwell boundary condition (DMBC), this study addresses the limitations of the original DMBC used in DUGKS. Specifically, it is found that the DMBC produces spurious velocity slip and temperature jump, which are proportional to the mesh size and the momentum accommodation coefficient. The proposed multiscale DMBC is implemented by ensuring that the reflected original distribution function excludes collision effects. Theoretical analyses and numerous numerical tests show that the multiscale DMBC can achieve exactly the non-slip and non-jump conditions in the continuum limit and accurately captures non-equilibrium phenomena across a wide range of Knudsen numbers. The results demonstrate that the DUGKS with the multiscale DMBC can work properly for wall boundary conditions in all flow regimes with a fixed discretization in both space and time, without limitations on the thickness of the Knudsen layer and relaxation time. The sparse version of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model reproduces essential features of the original SYK model while reducing the number of disorder parameters. In this Research Letter, we propose a further simplification of the model which we call the binary-coupling sparse SYK model. We set the nonzero couplings to be ±1, rather than being sampled from a continuous distribution such as Gaussian. Remarkably, this simplification turns out to be an improvement: The binary-coupling model exhibits strong correlations in the spectrum, which is the important feature of the original SYK model that leads to the quick onset of the random-matrix universality, more efficiently in terms of the number of nonzero terms. This model is better suited for analog or digital quantum simulations of quantum chaotic behavior and holographic metals due to its simplicity and scaling properties.

A deep understanding of the mechanisms underlying many-body quantum chaos is one of the big challenges in contemporary theoretical physics. We tackle this problem in the context of a set of perturbed quadratic Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) Hamiltonians defined on graphs. This allows us to disentangle the geometrical properties of the underlying single-particle problem and the importance of the interaction terms, showing that the former is the dominant feature ensuring the single-particle to many-body chaotic transition. Our results are verified numerically with state-of-the-art numerical techniques, capable of extracting eigenvalues in a desired energy window of very large Hamiltonians. Our approach essentially provides a new way of viewing many-body chaos from a single-particle perspective.

Rotation reduces convective mixing in Jupiter and other gas giants

Recent measurements of Jupiter’s gravitational moments by the Juno spacecraft and seismology of Saturn’s rings suggest that the primordial composition gradients in the deep interior of these planets have persisted since their formation. One possible explanation is the presence of a double-diffusive staircase below the planet’s outer convection zone, which inhibits mixing across the deeper layers. However, hydrodynamic simulations have shown that these staircases are not long-lasting and can be disrupted by overshooting convection. In this letter, we suggests that planetary rotation could be another factor for the longevity of primordial composition gradients. Using rotational mixing-length theory and 3D hydrodynamic simulations, we demonstrate that rotation significantly reduces both the convective velocity and the mixing of primordial composition gradients. In particular, for Jovian conditions at t ∼ 108 yrs after formation, rotation reduces the convective velocity by a factor of 6, and in turn, the kinetic energy flux available for mixing gets reduced by a factor of 63 ∼ 200. This leads to an entrainment timescale that is more than two orders of magnitude longer than without rotation. We encourage future hydrodynamic models of Jupiter and other gas giants to include rapid rotation, because the decrease in the mixing efficiency could explain why Jupiter and Saturn are not fully mixed. © 2023, CC BY.

High-quality fluorescence imaging of biological systems is limited by processes like photobleaching and phototoxicity, and also in many cases, by limited access to the latest generations of microscopes. Moreover, low temporal resolution can lead to a motion blur effect in living systems. Our work presents a deep learning (DL) generative-adversarial approach to the problem of obtaining high-quality (HQ) images based on their low-quality (LQ) equivalents. We propose a generative-adversarial network (GAN) for contrast transfer between two different separate microscopy systems: a confocal microscope (producing HQ images) and a wide-field fluorescence microscope (producing LQ images). Our model proves that such transfer is possible, allowing us to receive HQ-generated images characterized by low mean squared error (MSE) values, high structural similarity index (SSIM), and high peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) values. For our best model in the case of comparing HQ-generated images and HQ-ground truth images, the median values of the metrics are 6·10-4, 0.9413, and 31.87, for MSE, SSIM, and PSNR, respectively. In contrast, in the case of comparison between LQ and HQ ground truth median values of the metrics are equal to 0.0071, 0.8304, and 21.48 for MSE, SSIM, and PSNR respectively. Therefore, we observe a significant increase ranging from 14% to 49% for SSIM and PSNR respectively. These results, together with other single-system cross-modality studies, provide proof of concept for further implementation of a cross-system biological image quality enhancement. © 2024, CC BY-SA.

Unbiased Estimation Using a Class of Diffusion Processes

We study the problem of unbiased estimation of expectations with respect to (w.r.t.) π a given, general probability measure on (Rd,B(Rd)) that is absolutely continuous with respect to a standard Gaussian measure. We focus on simulation associated to a particular class of diffusion processes, sometimes termed the Schrödinger-Föllmer Sampler, which is a simulation technique that approximates the law of a particular diffusion bridge process {Xt}t∈[0,1] on Rd, d ∈ N0. This latter process is constructed such that, starting at X0 = 0, one has X1 ∼ π. Typically, the drift of the diffusion is intractable and, even if it were not, exact sampling of the associated diffusion is not possible. As a result, [10, 15] consider a stochastic Euler-Maruyama scheme that allows the development of biased estimators for expectations w.r.t. π. We show that for this methodology to achieve a mean square error of O(Ε2), for arbitrary Ε > 0, the associated cost is O(Ε−5). We then introduce an alternative approach that provides unbiased estimates of expectations w.r.t. π, that is, it does not suffer from the time discretization bias or the bias related with the approximation of the drift function. We prove that to achieve a mean square error of O(Ε2), the associated cost is, with high probability, O(Ε−2|log(Ε)|2+δ), for any δ > 0.
