Physical Properties of [Ni–(Mo/Cr)–Si]:[Ti/Nb] Bulk Metallic Glass Systems: A Comparison Study

Using a mechanical high-energy ball milling approach, we created Bulk Metallic Glass (BMG) matrices using the generic formula [Ni–(Mo/Cr)–Si]100−x:[Ti/Nb]x (x = 0–15 at.%). Based on its exceptional mechanical, thermal, structural, and corrosion qualities, the best sample is chosen for each series which are labeled as—NMST6 ((Ni75Mo15Si10)94Ti6), NMSNb10 ((Ni75Mo15Si10)90Nb10), NCST8 ((Ni75Cr15Si10)92Ti8) and NCSNb6 ([Ni–Cr–Si]94[Nb]6). The findings showed that the optimal amounts of Ti/Nb content mixing in the current BMG network prevented embrittlement, solved strain cracking issues, avoided pitting, and enhanced corrosion resistance—all of which are critical for aerospace and lightweight vehicle applications. All of the targeted samples' variations in thermal (ΔT, Trg), mechanical (σy, Εp, hardness), and potentiometric (Ec, ic, Ep, ip) parameters may be described in terms of structural variation and glass-modifying characteristics brought about by the optimal substitution of Ti/Nb. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Energy Dynamics Powered by Traction and Stress Control Formation and Motion of +1/2 Topological Defects in Epithelial Cell Monolayers

In confluent cell monolayers, patterns of cell forces and motion are systematically altered near topological defects in cell shape. In turn, defects have been proposed to alter cell density, extrusion, and invasion, but it remains unclear how the defects form and how they affect cell forces and motion. Here, we studied +1/2 defects, and, in contrast to prior studies, we observed both tail-to-head and head-to-tail defect motion occurring at the same time in the same cell monolayer. We quantified the cell velocities, the tractions at the cell-substrate interface, and stresses within the cell layer near +1/2 defects. Results revealed that both traction and stress are sources of activity within the epithelial cell monolayer, with their competition defining whether the cells inject or dissipate energy and determining the direction of motion of +1/2 defects. Interestingly, patterns of motion, traction, stress, and energy injection near +1/2 defects existed before defect formation, suggesting that defects form as a result of spatially coordinated patterns in cell forces and motion. These findings reverse the current picture, from one in which defects define the cell forces and motion to one in which coordinated patterns of cell forces and motion cause defects to form and move. Modeling oscillating surge wave energy converter(OSWEC) systems is particularly challenging in realistic sea states where nonlinear WEC dynamics are common due to complex fluid-structure interaction, breaking waves, and other phenomena. Computationally efficient linear models can be inaccurate in energetic seas, while higher-fidelity numerical models are too computationally expensive for operational use, such as real-time state estimation and optimal control. To bridge this gap in modelling methods, we use Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics(SINDy) to build parsimonious nonlinear reduced order models (ROMs) that describe OSWEC behavior in response to large-amplitude regular waves. Here, SINDy uses high-fidelity CFD data of nonlinear kinematic OSWEC behavior to identify ordinary differential equations(ODEs) that describe the time-evolution of measurement variables. We not only are able to develop reduced-order models that accurately describe both transient and steady state system behavior, but we are able to gain valuable information on the underlying dynamics of the system. We find dominant cubic terms of the ROMs, indicative of higher-order nonlinearities in the system dynamics that can not be captured with purely linear techniques. These findings provide insight into modeling highly nonlinear WEC dynamics in response to energetic seas and present a framework for applying similar analysis to lab- or field scale experiments. © 2023 European Wave and Tidal Energy Conference. The commercial future of organic photovoltaics (OPVs) relies on their efficiency and reliability. Recent progress in the field has ensured the achievement of device efficiency comparable to those of commercial silicon-based photovoltaics (Si-PVs) [1]. In pursuit of reliable devices, recent works have demonstrated the intrinsic stability of both small-molecule, vacuum deposited [2] and non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) - polymer-based devices [3] under controlled laboratory conditions. The final step for outdoor deployment is therefore a demonstration of the reliability of large area OPV modules in the field, subjected to fluctuating environmental conditions such as humidity, temperature, rainfall, snow, and solar intensity. In this work, we develop a customized test facility intended for the study of the reliability of large area OPV modules deployed in outdoor environments. The facility is designed for automated in-situ measurements calibrated to 1 sun solar intensity, AM 1.5 G illumination. Initial data show the modules retain more than 95% of their initial performance for 150 h when exposed to varying solar intensities, temperature fluctuations of -2°C to 10°C, and relative humidity as high as 90%. The only significant extrinsic challenge to device stability observed was the ingress of water into the package. This is mitigated by improved packaging which utilizes polyisobutylene (PIB) encapsulation and a customized insulated glass unit (IGU). © 2024 IEEE.

According to the market research report, the nuclear decommissioning services market is currently experiencing considerable growth, with a projected Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of nearly 13% during the 2020–2024 forecast period. This expansion is primarily fueled by the advancement of Industry 4.0, in conjunction with the emergence of cutting-edge technologies such as the Internet of Things, big data, artificial intelligence, and 5G. Even though the fact that robots have already been utilized in the nuclear industry, their adoption has been hindered by conservative regulations. However, the nuclear decommissioning market presents an opportunity for the advancement of robotics technology. The British have already invested heavily in encouraging the use of intelligent robots for nuclear decommissioning, and other countries, such as Taiwan, should follow suit. Taiwan's flourishing robotics development industry in manufacturing, logistics, and other domains can be leveraged to introduce advanced robotics in the decommissioning of its nuclear power plants. By doing so, Taiwan can establish itself as a competitive player in the nuclear decommissioning services market for the next two decades. © 2023 Korean Nuclear Society

Solidification is one of the main underlying processes in the development of solder joints. As such, there is widespread agreement that understanding the mechanisms of nucleation and growth during solidification can help in the development of optimal solder alloys. While recent advances in in-situ techniques including synchrotron and electron microscopy have allowed for an increased understanding of these mechanisms there are still unanswered questions, particularly around the behaviour of the liquid/solid interface. In this work we have investigated the CU6Sn5 intermetallic liquid/solid interface in Sn-Ag-Cu alloys with Cu atomic motion through the use of high voltage transmission electron microscopy (HV-TEM) around the liquidus temperature. Application of this liquid/solid interface TEM in-situ observation method has potential for solder alloy developments through controlled solidification ie, nucleation and growth, of liquid alloys. © 2024 Japan Institute of Electronics Packaging.

The objective of this investigation is to assess the effect of obstacles on numerical heat transfer and fluid flow momentum in a rectangular microchannel(MC).Two distinct configurations were studied:one without obstacles and the other with alternating obstacles placed on the upper and lower *** research utilized the thermal lattice Boltzmann method(LBM),which solves the energy and momentum equations of fluids with the BGK approximation,implemented in a Python coding *** jump and slip velocity conditions were utilized in the simulation for the MC and extended to all obstacle *** study aims to analyze the rarefaction effect,with Knudsen numbers(Kn)of 0.012,0.02,and *** outcomes indicate that rarefaction has a significant impact on the velocity and temperature *** presence of nine obstacles led to slower fluid movement inside the microchannel MC,resulting in faster cooling at the *** MCs with obstacles,the rarefaction effect plays a crucial role in decreasing the Nusselt number(Nu)and skin friction coefficient(Cf).Furthermore,the study demonstrated that the obstacles played a crucial role in boosting fluid flow and heat transfer in the *** findings suggest that the examined configurations could have potential applications as cooling technologies in micro-electro-mechanical systems and microdevice applications.

Thin films FexSi1-xO, with iron (Fe) content between 0 to 20% have been applied to substrates made of soda lime glass by means of the spray pyrolysis process. Annealing the films allowed us to test their thermal stability. Both the as-depositedFexSi1-xO thin film and annealed FexSi1-xOthin film were analyzed by. Researchers analyzed the structure of the films and its composition using these methods. The XRD study demonstrated that the FexSi1-xOthin films, even if they are deposited or annealed, have a wurtzite structure in the plane orientation. The result shows that the films' crystalline structure is not affected by the heating process. In addition to that, the good indicator of film quality and consistency were no signs of pinholes or cracks in the films. An iron deficiency was identified by following the annealing process, according to the compositional analysis done by EDAX. Annealing affects the integration of Fe in the film's matrix, according to these changes occur in the composition. The band gap changes to red for FexSi1-xOthin films was observed in the optical characteristics of these films while tested using Ultra Violet -Visible spectroscopy. Integrating Fe into films alters their electronic structure, and it is one important indicator for band gap change. The incorporation of Fe resulted in a reduction in resistance and it is measured by the electrical properties using the two-probe method which in turn indicates an improvement in the films' electrical conductivity. In conclusion, the outcomes if this research supports the feasibility of incorporating iron into the silicon carbide thin films. There are major structural changes to the films' electrical characteristics and optical properties due to this incorporation. The outcomes of this research have significant implications for the advancement of electronic and optoelectronic devices that could make use of these alterations to enhance their performance. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

We consider the joint problem of system identification and inverse optimal control for discrete-time stochastic Linear Quadratic Regulators. We analyze finite and infinite time horizons in a partially observed setting, where the state is observed noisily. To recover closed-loop system parameters, we develop inference methods based on probabilistic statespace model (SSM) techniques. First, we show that the system parameters exhibit non-identifiability in the infinite-horizon from closed-loop measurements, and we provide exact and numerical methods to disentangle the parameters. Second, to improve parameter identifiability, we show that we can further enhance recovery by either (1) incorporating additional partial measurements of the control signals or (2) moving to the finitehorizon setting. We further illustrate the performance of our methodology through numerical examples. © 2024 IEEE.
