Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become an essential energy storage technology for a variety of applications, such as energy storage systems, electric vehicles, and flexible electronics. However, due to safety concerns regarding the flammability of the liquid electrolytes used in conventional LIBs, their use has been restricted; thus, there is considerable interest in the use of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) and other solid electrolytes. These SPEs inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites and prevent thermal runaway, which is responsible for the instability of liquid electrolytes. Despite this, SPEs have inferior mechanical properties, resulting in a reduced battery cycle life. Thus, SPEs have been modified by incorporating particles, particularly nanoparticles, into their polymer matrix in order to improve their mechanical properties. Due to their inherent properties, including a large surface area and mechanical rigidity, these nanoparticles improve the interfacial contact and electrochemical stability of these modified SPEs. Consequently, it is essential to investigate the mechanical properties of these SPEs using appropriate techniques. Even though numerous reports have investigated the mechanical properties of some of these SPEs, there is insufficient literature on the tools/techniques for analyzing these mechanical properties. In this review, the experimental techniques used to explore the mechanical properties of SPEs are described.

Amidst the powerful capabilities of wastewater remediation using ozone nanobubbles (ONBs), the intricate challenge of pH control remains unsolved. To date, an efficient and scalable chemical agent is highly desired to overcome the limiting factor of conventional ozone-based wastewater conversion. This study introduces a sequential system that combines ONBs with adsorption techniques utilizing an eggshell-based adsorbent. The synergistic application of ONBs and adsorption successfully achieved notable removal percentages of 95.05% for turbidity, 96.18% for color at 418 nm, and 61.33% for TDS. In comparison, the individual ONB system showed removal percentages of 94.97%, 95.93%, and 61.97%, while the adsorption alone achieved 34.02, 29.65%, and 16.93%, respectively. Additionally, the combined system effectively neutralized the solution, increasing the pH from 2.67 to 7.14, outperforming both ONBs (pH 2.67) and adsorption (pH 6.89) alone. Our work underscores the efficiency of the system, which not only provides a high removal percentage of pollutants but also secures the required pH levels. This showcases a forward leap in developing environmentally friendly and efficient water treatment technologies.

Supported bimetallic dual-atom catalysts (DACs) have been regarded as a promising class of materials for small molecule activation, despite their challenging syntheses. We have successfully synthesised supported Cu,Fe dual-atom catalysts (DACs) on the Zr6O4 secondary building units of UiO-66-NH2, enabling efficient activation of O2. Our model photocatalytic styrene oxidation reaction achieved remarkably high product selectivity (>92%) towards benzaldehyde. This superior reactivity is attributed to the well-balanced synergy between the electronic and steric characteristics, enabling efficient O2 activation by the sterically restrained Cu and Fe sites in proximity for the formation of the bridging peroxy group. This group facilitates the selective oxidation of styrene similar to many peroxide-based oxidants. The confined microporous environment allows for control of the electronic and geometric properties of the DACs, shedding light towards more precise atomistic engineering that approaches the conventional inorganic metal(s)-complex counterparts. Overall, supported bimetallic dual-atom catalysts (DACs) are a promising class of materials for small molecule activation, despite their challenging syntheses. © 2023 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Local and global measures of the shear moduli of jammed disk packings

Strain-controlled isotropic compression gives rise to jammed packings of repulsive, frictionless disks with either positive or negative global shear moduli. We carry out computational studies to understand the contributions of the negative shear moduli to the mechanical response of jammed disk packings. We first decompose the ensemble-averaged, global shear modulus as 〈G〉=(1−F−)〈G+〉+F−〈G−〉, where F− is the fraction of jammed packings with negative shear moduli and 〈G+〉 and 〈G−〉 are the average values from packings with positive and negative moduli, respectively. We show that 〈G+〉 and 〈|G−|〉 obey different power-law scaling relations above and below pN2∼1. For pN2>1, both 〈G+〉N and 〈|G−|〉N∼(pN2)β, where β∼0.5 for repulsive linear spring interactions. Despite this, 〈G〉N∼(pN2)β′ with β′≳0.5 due to the contributions from packings with negative shear moduli. We show further that the probability distribution of global shear moduli P(G) collapses at fixed pN2 and different values of p and N. We calculate analytically that P(G) is a Γ distribution in the pN2≪1 limit. As pN2 increases, the skewness of P(G) decreases and P(G) becomes a skew-normal distribution with negative skewness in the pN2≫1 limit. We also partition jammed disk packings into subsystems using Delaunay triangulation of the disk centers to calculate local shear moduli. We show that the local shear moduli defined from groups of adjacent triangles can be negative even when G>0. The spatial correlation function of local shear moduli C(r⃗) displays weak correlations for pnsub2<10−2, where nsub is the number of particles within each subsystem. However, C(r⃗) begins to develop long-ranged spatial correlations with fourfold angular symmetry for pnsub2≳10−2.

Radio frequency energy harvesting has attracted considerable interest as a technique of enabling self-powered wireless networks. This technique faces several challenges, such as the receiving and the rectifying modules of a rectenna system. Multiband antennas provide several comparative advantages against the goal of maximizing the amount of energy harvesting. In this work, we present a multiband microstrip patch antenna with three slits operating in the LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) and the cellular (GSM-1800 and UMTS) communication frequency bands. A feasible solution of the antenna is obtained by the application of a recently introduced nature-inspired optimization technique, namely the Coyote Optimization Algorithm. The proposed antenna operates satisfactorily in the LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) and the cellular (GSM-1800 and UMTS) communication frequency bands. Measured results of the proposed antenna exhibit an acceptable performance (multiband frequency operation, maximum gain of 3.94 dBi, broadside operation) and demonstrate features of operation, which make it a strong candidate for various RF energy harvesting applications. © 2020 IEEE.

A multitude of individuals across the globe grapple with motor disabilities. Neural prosthetics utilizing Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology exhibit promise for improving motor rehabilitation outcomes. The intricate nature of EEG data poses a significant hurdle for current BCI systems. Recently, a qualitative repository of EEG signals tied to both upper and lower limb execution of motor and motor imagery tasks has been unveiled. Despite this, the productivity of the Machine Learning (ML) Models that were trained on this dataset was alarmingly deficient, and the evaluation framework seemed insufficient. To enhance outcomes, robust feature engineering (signal processing) methodologies are implemented. A collection of time domain, frequency domain, and wavelet-derived features was obtained from 16-channel EEG signals, and the Maximum Relevance Minimum Redundancy (MRMR) approach was employed to identify the four most significant features. For classification K Nearest Neighbors, Support Vector Machine, Decision Tree, and Naive Bayes models were implemented with these selected features, evaluating their effectiveness through metrics such as testing accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 Score. By leveraging SVM with a Gaussian Kernel, a remarkable maximum testing accuracy of 92.50% for motor activities and 95.48% for imagery activities is achieved. These results are notably more dependable and gratifying compared to the previous study, where the peak accuracy was recorded at 74.36%. This research work provide an in-depth analysis of the MI Limb EEG dataset and it will help in designing and developing simple, cost-effective and reliable BCI systems for neuro-rehabilitation. © 2025, The Authors. Oscillatory Hall effect from magnetoelectronic coupling in flexoelectronic silicon

The magnetoelectronic coupling can be defined as cross-domain coupling between electronic and magnetic properties, where modulation in magnetic properties changes the electronic properties. In this letter, an explicit experimental evidence of magnetoelectronic coupling is presented, which is uncovered from oscillatory Hall effect response in Hall measurement. The strain gradient in a MgO (1.8 nm)/p-Si (∼400 nm) freestanding sample leads to transfer of electrons (∼5×1018 cm-3) from valence to conduction band due to flexoelectronic charge separation in the p-Si layer. The resulting flexoelectronic polarization gives rise to temporal magnetic moment from dynamical multiferroicity. The external magnetic field changes the net temporal magnetic moment, which causes modulations in charge carrier concentration and oscillatory Hall effect. The period of oscillatory Hall response is 1.12 T, which is attributed to the magnitude of temporal magnetic moment. The discovery of oscillatory Hall effect adds a new member to the family of Hall effects. © 2024, CC BY.

A digital twin (DT) is a virtual representation of physical process, products and/or systems that requires a high-fidelity computational model for continuous update through the integration of sensor data and user input. In the context of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing, a digital twin of the manufacturing process can offer predictions for the produced parts, diagnostics for manufacturing defects, as well as control capabilities. This paper introduces a parameterized physics-based digital twin (PPB-DT) for the statistical predictions of LPBF metal additive manufacturing process. We accomplish this by creating a high-fidelity computational model that accurately represents the melt pool phenomena and subsequently calibrating and validating it through controlled experiments. In PPB-DT, a mechanistic reduced-order method-driven stochastic calibration process is introduced, which enables the statistical predictions of the melt pool geometries and the identification of defects such as lack-of-fusion porosity and surface roughness, specifically for diagnostic applications. Leveraging data derived from this physics-based model and experiments, we have trained a machine learning-based digital twin (PPB-ML-DT) model for predicting, monitoring, and controlling melt pool geometries. These proposed digital twin models can be employed for predictions, control, optimization, and quality assurance within the LPBF process, ultimately expediting product development and certification in LPBF-based metal additive manufacturing. We have previously reported spontanous formation of InGaN/GaN superlattice structure on nominal InGaN films grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). In this work, we report on the impact of In flux on the formation and periodicity of self-assembled InxGa1-xN/InyGa1-yN superlattice structure (SASL). We show that the thickness and In composition in the InGaN layer varies by changing the In flux. These films were stucturally characterized by X-ray diffraction and simulated by globalfit software to get the thickness and In composition. The superlattice structures were confimred by scanning transmission electron microscopy and the thickness of InGaN layer and In composition were determined by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. This work can provide a method for using the SASL with better control for their optoelectronics application. © 2022 IEEE.

In numerous chaos based applications, it is often important to use chaotic maps that showcase desirable statistical characteristics, that can improve the performance of the designed architecture. Yet, it is hard to design maps that can achieve the desired statistical properties. Motivated by this, this work considers a family of piecewise chaotic maps, and studies how tuning their parameters can affect the mean value of the generated chaotic trajectories. Such a family of maps can be highly practical in future chaos based applications. © 2023 IEEE.
