An optimization methodology aiming at energy and cost savings in frost-free refrigerators is advanced. A steady-state simulation model was devised and its predictions for energy consumption were compared with experimental data obtained elsewhere, with differences not exceeding a +/- 9% error band. The model was used to find out the evaporator air flow rate, the number of evaporator and condenser fins, the compressor size and efficiency, and the insulation thicknesses of both fresh- and frozen-food compartments which yield the minimum energy consumption when the total cost is constrained. The optimization led to a refrigeration system with energy consumption 18% lower than that observed for the baseline system without any cost penalty. The system performance for four different compressors, including a high efficiency, a large capacity and a variable-speed one, was also analyzed. For the refrigerator under analysis, it was found that, to ensure an economically feasible design, the variable-speed compressor should not cost 26% more than a single-speed one with the same piston displacement. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Porous, nanostructured silver samples were produced using a direct-write method where a nanoparticle aerosol consisting of particles with a mean size of approximately 5 nm were accelerated to speeds of approximately 1000 m/sec and impacted onto a translating substrate [1]. The impacting particles have sufficient energy to stick to the substrate, allowing patterned thick films to be directly written from the aerosol without a mask. Unlike other low temperature processing routes for achieving patterned films, no organics are added that can interfere with post-deposition processing. Typical films are 5-100 μm thick, up to several centimeters long, and have an as-deposited relative densities as high as 70% of bulk Ag. Compression tests were carried out in steps at room temperature and at 150°C under constant displacement rates. Local strain and densification were measured by optical profilometry between each compression step. The results can be used as a starting point to better understand the mechanisms that govern plasticity, creep, and sintering in nanostructured, porous silver at low processing temperatures. © 2013 Materials Research Society.

Modifying the Electronic Orbitals of Nickelate Heterostructures via Structural Distortions

We describe a general materials design approach that produces large orbital energy splittings (orbital polarization) in nickelate heterostructures, creating a two-dimensional single-band electronic surface at the Fermi energy. The resulting electronic structure mimics that of the high temperature cuprate superconductors. The two key ingredients are (i) the construction of atomic-scale distortions about the Ni site via charge transfer and internal electric fields, and (ii) the use of three-component (tricomponent) superlattices to break inversion symmetry. We use ab initio calculations to implement the approach, with experimental verification of the critical structural motif that enables the design to succeed.

Synchronization of a class of second order distributed parameter systems

In this work, we examine the synchronization control for a class of second order distributed parameter systems. The objective is to design controllers that guarantee agreement between the position and velocity states of N identical second order systems. The controller structure involves coupling terms consisting of the pairwise difference of both position and velocity states of the second order systems in order to enforce consensus. Possible improvements of the agreement amongst the states of each of the systems are considered and compared to the case of noninteracting controllers. Extensions to synchronizing controllers for the case of partial connectivity are discussed. Extensive numerical studies are included to provide a further insight on the effects of synchronization control of second order distributed parameter systems.

A simulation-based optimization methodology for designing unitary residential air conditioners with focus on both energy performance enhancement and cost savings is presented. A steady-state system simulation model was put forward for a 2.5-ton nominal cooling capacity split-type air conditioning unit operating with R-410A as the working fluid. The model predictions for cooling capacity, sensible heat ratio (SHR) and coefficient of performance (COP) were compared with experimental data, when it was found that the model is able to predict the experimental trends within a ±6% error band. The model was then used to find out the condenser and evaporator geometries (face area, heat transfer area) that enhance the system COP for a fixed cost. On one hand, it was observed that the COP can be increased by 7% if the cost is held fixed. On the other hand, cost savings of 33% were achieved when the system COP was held constant. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An advanced methodology for integrity monitoring of structures based on Acoustic Emission and follow-up non-destructive testing has been developed and verified in laboratory1, 2. Current research activities3 focus on application to large-scaled transportation products (ships, road tankers, railway cars). Monitoring during operation enables early detection of degradations (corrosion, fatigue cracks) and condition-based maintenance. Consequently, transportation of (hazardous) goods will become safer and economically compared to conventional time-based inspections. Main features of the developed monitoring technique are: (a) identification of degradation using FEA based on load data, (b) use of advanced and intrinsically safe AE equipment, redesigned for application at transport products, identification of degradation mechanisms and separation of background noises, (c) on-line acquisition, assessment and storage of AE signals, and (d) follow-up non-destructive testing for verification of degradations. The developed monitoring technique and its validation on test objects are presented. AE signals are assessed to identify and locate degradation mechanisms. The results reveal capability and accuracy of the proposed methodology in the large-scale application field.

A series of experiments were conducted to study the effects of deposited energy, via laser pulses, near the leading edge of a low speed airfoil flow. Significant effect was observed in the airflow over a low speed airfoil model, with 20" chord length, in a closed loop subsonic wind tunnel facility at Tufts University. High quality particle image velocimetry measurements were conducted to quantitatively determine the aerodynamic effects of the deposited energy. From these data, we inferred the effects on the overall drag of the airfoil. Additionally, in a smaller scale open loop wind tunnel facility at PM&AM Research, the change in lift of a 4" chord wing model was quantified using a novel measurement system designed and developed as part of the effort. The data obtained in this experiment allowed further characterization of the effects of laser energy-deposition and indicate the technique significantly affects the airflow over low speed airfoils. Many applications may utilize this laser technique for remote flow modification, both on-and off-surface. To provide shock-wave exposure with high accuracy and widen the application area of shock-wave therapy, a miniaturized shock-wave device for endoscopic surgery was developed. The shock-wave device applies an electrohydraulic mechanism for generating shock waves in light of device miniaturization and suitability for standard clinical practice. The outer diameter of the shock-wave generator is 11 mm, so it can be inserted in the body through a trocar used in endoscopic surgery or a natural orifice in the case of natural-orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery (NOTES). The distance between the shock-wave focal point and the front of the device is 10 mm. The focused shock wave was observed at the focal point by visualization with the schlieren imaging technique. The pressure at the focal point was measured, and the measurement revealed that the device can produce a peak pressure of 2.32±0.81 MPa at 2-kV discharge voltage, 3.69±1.06 MPa at 3 kV, 5.67±2.44 MPa at 4 kV, and 7.27±2.33 MPa at 5 kV. © 2013 by JSME.
