This work offers the opportunity to consider the possibility of realizing a solar chimney power plant in the region of Constantine (Algeria). This region is characterized by its important solar radiation resource and ambient temperature. Based on actual measurements of Constantine weather station for the period of April 2020, the performance analysis of a solar chimney which have three times the dimensions of the Manzaneres prototype (Spain) is carried out using of Fluent software. The obtained results show that when the dimensions of the solar chimney are large, the impact of small changes in solar irradiation is negligible. Also, the studied power plant with dimensions of;584 m height, a diameter of 30 m and a collector diameter of 732 m is capable of producing a monthly average of 72 to 296 MW of electrical energy, this energy production would be sufficient to meet the needs of rural areas located in this region. © 2021, European Association for the Development of Renewable Energy, Environment and Power Quality (EA4EPQ). The discovery of van der Waals superconductors in recent years has generated a lot of excitement for their potentially novel pairing mechanisms. However, their typical atomic-scale thickness and micrometer-scale lateral dimensions impose severe challenges to investigations of pairing symmetry by conventional methods. In this report we demonstrate a new technique that employs high-quality-factor superconducting resonators to measure the kinetic inductance-up to a part per million-and loss of a van der Waals superconductor. We analyze the equivalent circuit model to extract the kinetic inductance, superfluid stiffness, penetration depth, and ratio of imaginary and real parts of the complex conductivity. We validate the technique by measuring aluminum and finding excellent agreement in both the zero-temperature superconducting gap as well as the complex conductivity data when compared with BCS theory. We then demonstrate the utility of the technique by measuring the kinetic inductance of multi-layered niobium diselenide and discuss the limits to the accuracy of our technique when the transition temperature of the sample, NbSe2 at 7.06 K, approaches our Nb probe resonator at 8.59 K. Our method will be useful for practitioners in the growing fields of superconducting physics, materials science, and quantum sensing, as a means of characterizing superconducting circuit components and studying pairing mechanisms of the novel superconducting states which arise in layered 2D materials and heterostructures. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

Structure Transition and Improved Multiferroic Properties of Bi1-xTbxFeO3(x = 0.00-0.15) Thin Films

We investigated phase constitutions, ferroelectric (FE), and magnetic characteristics of BiFeO3 (BFO) films with Tb substitution. Bi1-xTbxFeO3 (BTFO) ( x = 0.00-0.15) thin films were prepared on the Pt-buffered glass substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). BTFO films with x = 0.00-0.15 were confirmed to mainly consist of the perovskite phase. The structure in the studied films is transformed from rhombohedral for x = 0.00 to pseudo-cubic for x = 0.05-0.10, and orthorhombic for x = 0.15. The studied BTFO polycrystalline films exhibit the desired FE and ferromagnetic properties at the same time. The remanent polarization ( 2Pr) of 157 μC/cm2 and electrical coercive field (Ec) of 485 kV/cm are obtained for BTFO films at x= 0.05. Besides, the saturation magnetization ( Ms ) of 15.0 eμcm3 is found for x = 0.05 film. The enhanced Ms with Bi0.95Tb0.05FeO3 is due to the magnetic moment of the doped Tb 3+ ion in addition to the suppressed spiral spin configuration. The result of this work indicates that the radius and magnetic moment of the Tb 3+ ions play a critical role in the structural evolution, refined microstructure, and therefore, enhanced multiferroic (MF) properties for Tb-substituted BFO polycrystalline films. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper proposes a technique based on a MAT-LAB code capable of getting an optimized preliminary design of an efficient low-speed compressor qualified for laboratory experiments with relatively low cost. The code was made to design five repeated compressor stages on two steps conducted iteratively, namely 'mean line and radial design' to determine the optimum compressor geometry and then the 'off-design' to test the stability of the design in other working conditions. The optimization tool minimizes a flexible cost function which can be changed if needed to get different designs. A certain cost function was chosen, the results of the design corresponding to it lived up to expectations. Some aerodynamic cases were simulated using Ansys to verify the results of the chosen design. © 2021 IEEE.

The square-planar nickelates are a class of superconductors analogous to the cuprates and promise to provide insight into the pairing mechanism in high-temperature superconducting oxides. The parent phase of doped superconducting films is NdNiO2, which is prepared by reducing 3+ Ni in NdNiO3 films. In this paper, we develop an ultrahigh vacuum reduction method using aluminum deposited on top of the 3+ nickelates and monitor the reduction process in real time through in situ crystal truncation rod measurements and diffraction x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy measurements across the Ni K edge. We establish a relation between Ni valence and the lattice constant of NdNiO3−x and show that the process can precisely control the oxygen content in the films. Finally, we extend the reduction process to quintuple square-planar nickelates.

Effect of Bias Flow and Interactions between Slits on the Linear Acoustic Transfer Impedance of a Micro-Slit Plate

Micro-Slit plates (MSPs) are plates with arrays of slit-shaped perforations, with the width of the order of the viscous-boundary-layer thickness. In this work, the effect of a bias flow on the acoustic transfer impedance of a micro-slit plate is investigated in the linear regime for a specific slit geometry. This geometry is inspired by slits obtained by cutting and bending the plate and proposes an alternative to slanted perforations. In the presence of a bias flow, a wall jet is formed by the coalescence of the jets emerging downstream of the plate. This can provide film cooling to the *** behavior of the plate in the presence of a steady bias flow is characterized in the terms of the discharge coefficient. The discharge coefficient is qualitatively well predicted by a two-dimensional viscous-incompressible-flow model, except for deviations associated with whistling that is ignored in the model. Numerical solutions of the two-dimensional Linearized Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of a steady flow are compared to the acoustic transfer impedance measured using an impedance *** geometry of the slits is found to have a significant impact on their acoustic behavior. The interaction between neighboring slits generates complex Reynolds number dependency of the results with oscillations as a function of the Strouhal number based on the bias flow velocity. This effect does not occur for a single slit and is drastically reduced by increasing the distance between neighboring slits.A quasi-steady model based on the average velocity in the slit predicts the order of magnitude of the resistance. The inertance shows complex behavior, which is qualitatively predicted by the two-dimensional model. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Transparent Porphyrin-Based Hybrid Films for Spectral Selective Solar Harvesting and Energy Generation

Spectral-selectively solar harvest is achieved in designated frequency regions for photothermal energy generation. In this study, we have designed and synthesized porphyrin-based hybrids that typically exhibit two absorption peaks respectively near 400 nm (blue-violet) and 700 nm (NIR). To be able to tune the optical absorptions for more efficient solar harvest especially in the IR region, unique porphyrin hybrids are developed by incorporating another porphyrin compound such as phthalocyanine, and inorganic Fe 3 O 4 @Cu 2-x S nanoparticles with different absorption characteristics. By controlling the ratio of the components, the hybrids exhibit gradual and consistent changes in the optical spectra, showing high spectral tunability. Transparent thin films of the hybrids are deposited on glass substrates and constructed in parallel for 3D solar harvesting in a cuboid photothermal generator. Solar light is able to pass through the multilayers of thin films, generating significant thermal heat on each one for enhanced energy density. The structural features of the hybrids are well correlated to the optical behaviors based on Raman studies. Also discussed is the operating mechanisms underlying the photothermal behaviors associated with the hybrid structures. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Legacy codes are in ubiquitous use in scientific simulations;they are well-tested and there is significant time investment in their use. However, one challenge is the adoption of new, sometimes incompatible computing paradigms, such as GPU hardware. In this paper, we explore using automated code translation to enable execution of legacy multigrid solver code on GPUs without significant time investment and while avoiding intrusive changes to the codebase. We developed a thin, reusable translation layer that parses Fortran 2003 at compile time, interfacing with the existing library Loopy (Klöckner 2014) to transpile to C++/GPU code, which is then managed by a custom MPI runtime system that we created. With this low-effort approach, we are able to achieve a payoff of an approximately 2–3× speedup over a full CPU socket, and 6× in multi-node settings. © 2025, CC BY-SA.

Qubits that are intrinsically insensitive to depolarization and dephasing errors promise to significantly reduce the overhead of fault-tolerant quantum computing. At their optimal operating points, the logical states of these qubits exhibit both exponentially suppressed matrix elements and sweet spots in energy dispersion, rendering the qubits immune to depolarization and dephasing, respectively. We introduce a multimode qubit, the protomon, encoded in a fluxonium molecule circuit. Compared to the closely related 0–π qubit, the protomon offers several advantages in theory: resilience to circuit parameter disorder, minimal dephasing from intrinsic harmonic modes, and no dependence on static offset charge. As a proof of concept, we realize four protomon qubits. By tuning the qubits to various operating points identified with calibrated two-tone spectroscopy, we measure depolarization times ranging from 64 to 73 µs and dephasing times between 0.2 to 0.5 µs for one selected qubit. The discrepancy between the relatively short measured coherence times and theoretical predictions is not fully understood. This calls for future studies investigating the limiting noise factors, informing the direction for improving coherence times of the protomon qubit. © 2024, CC BY.
