In bulk form, Si1-x Gex is a promising thermoelectric material for high temperature applications. In this paper, we report results from an experimental study as well as theoretical modeling of the quantum confinement effect on the enhancement of the thermoelectric figure of merit. Si/Si1-x Gex, multiple quantum well structures are fabricated using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on SOI (Silicon-on-Insulator) substrates in order to eliminate substrate effects, especially on the Seebeck coefficient. A method to eliminate the influence of the buffer layer on the thermoelectric characterization is presented. An enhancement of the thermoelectric figure of merit within the quantum well over the bulk value is observed.

The debilitating pathology of stress fracture accounts for 10% of all athletic injuries[2], with prevalence as high as 20% in modern military basic training cohorts [3]. Increasing concerns surrounding adverse effects of radiology [5], combined with the 12.5% contribution of diagnostic imaging to Australian Medicare benefits paid in 2009-10 [6], have prompted the search for alternative/adjunct electronic decision support systems[7]. Within conducive physioanatomic milieu, thermal infrared imaging (TIRI) may feasibly be used to remotely detect and topographically map diagnostically useful signs of suprathreshold thermodynamic pathophysiology. This paper details a three month clinical pilot study into TIRI-based detection of osseous stress pathology in the lower legs of Australian Army basic trainees. A dataset of over 500 TIRI's was amassed. The apparent 'normal' thermal profile of the anterior aspect of the asymptomatic lower leg is topographically defined and validated against current thermophysiological theory [8] via cadaveric dissection.

In this paper an attempt is made to study the electronic contribution to the elastic constants of strained III-V materials under high magnetic fields on the basis of k.p theory. It is found taking strained Hgi - x CdxTe and Ini - xGaxAsyPi-y lattice matched InP as examples that they increase with increasing doping and oscillate with inverse magnetic field respectively. The strain enhances the numerical values of the elastic constants. The theoretical formulation is in quantitative agreement with the suggested experimental method of determining the above contributions for degenerate materials having arbitrary dispersion laws. In addition, the well-known results for strain free wide gap materials in the absence of magnetic field have been obtained from our generalized analysis under certain limiting conditions.

In this paper we have studied the photoemission from quantum wells (QW), quantum wells wires (QWWs) and quantum dots (QDs) of quantum confined strained III–V compounds on the basis of a newly formulated electron dispersion law. It is found taking such quantum confined Hg1–xCdxTe and In1–xGaxAsyP1–y lattice matched InP as examples that the photoemission increases with increasing energy of the incident photons in a ladder like manner and also exhibits oscillatory dependences with changing electron concentration and film thickness respectively for all types quantum confinement. The photoemitted current is greatest in strained QDs and least in unstrained QWs. In addition the theoretical results are in agreement with the experimental datas as given elsewhere.

A novel compact wideband reflector antenna with reconfigurable radiation patterns. The proposed antenna consists of a pair of stepped-structure patches, four switches and a coplanar waveguide feeding line. By switching the switches ON or OFF, the proposed antenna is able to provide two directional radiation patterns whose main-beams are roughly directed to opposite directions from 3.7 to 5.5 GHz. Compared with the current pattern reconfigurable antennas, the proposed antenna exhibits advantages of better back-to-front radiation ratio, more compact antenna size or wider operating band. In this investigation, the optimized size of the proposed antenna is 20 mm ×20 mm. Simulated and measured results are presented in this paper.

In this paper we show that a flash lamp can be employed to induce controlled lateral solidification of a-Si thin films. Specifically, a dual xenon-arc-lamp-based system was utilized to induce location-controlled complete melting by shaping the incident beam using a contact mask. The resulting laterally solidified microstructure consisted of exceptionally long grains (~10s to ~100s of μm) that were relatively free of intragrain-defects. With further development and optimization, the approach may lead to cost-effective/high-throughput processes and systems that can capture and enhance the advantages of laser-based/melt-mediated crystallization techniques.
