Enhanced magnetic and electrical properties of Ba2+ doped BiFeO3 multiferroic materials

This study investigates the structural, morphological, magnetic, and electrical properties of sol-gel auto-combusted Bi1-xBaxFeO3 (x = 0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, and 0.25) multiferroics using XRD, FESEM, VSM, and LCR methods. The samples exhibit rhombohedral spinel crystal structures in the R3c space group, confirmed by vibrational spectra of Fe–O bonds at approximately 450–465 cm−1 and 560–582 cm−1. FESEM micrographs reveal that the materials are spherical, tightly packed, and have minimal porosity. Saturation magnetization increases in Ba-doped samples, ranging from 1.45 emu/g to 2.49 emu/g at 20 kOe. The Cole-Cole plots display broader semicircles and increased frequency shifts (10 Hz–1 MHz), indicating enhanced granularity and improved grain boundary characteristics. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Enhanced Performance of Silicon Anodes through Hybrid Surface engineering

Silicon (Si) is a promising anode material for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity. However, Si-containing anodes typically suffer from unacceptably short lives because of the unrestricted growth of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). In this study, hybrid surface coatings are developed to stabilize the SEI in high loading pure Si anodes using atomic and molecular layer deposition. The coatings, consisting of LiF paired with lithicone, create an ionically conductive surface that enhances the capacity retention, rate performance, and longevity. Careful binder selection helps demonstrate the full utility of the coatings by enabling high loading electrodes to cycle continuously at current densities of 1200 mA/gSi. Uncoated controls, in comparison, fail within just 10 cycles at lower loadings. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy are used to provide supporting evidence of the coating composition and efficacy. The data indicate that our lithicone coating is converted to Li2CO3 upon cycling contributing to favorable LiF/Li2CO3 interfaces that enhance the space-charge effect at the active material’s surface. When applied to electrodes made with thermally stable binders and increasingly higher loadings (approaching 5 mAh/cm²), ion transport through the bulk electrode, rather than SEI growth, is shown to be the limiting factor. Furthermore, data suggests a favorable interaction between lithicone precursors and poly(acrylic acid) binders mitigates thermal decomposition at higher temperatures. The work presented here represents the successful realization of composite coatings containing LiF/Li2CO3 components to stabilize high-loading Si anodes. Life Cycle Assessment of the Charge Carrier Mediated Electrocatalytic Reduction of Carbon Dioxide to Formic Acid

A cradle-to-gate prospective life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted to investigate the environmental ramifications of a recently developed process to convert CO2 to formic acid through a unique charge carrier mediated electrocatalytic (IEC-FA) approach. According to the results of this study, CO2, and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and the electricity used to drive the CO2 reduction reaction are main environmental hot spots in the overall process in terms of global warming potential (GWP). The charge carrier mediated electrocatalytic reduction process shows a GWP of 1.02 kgCO2eq per kg formic acid produced. The LCA analysis was performed using TRACI 2.1, ReCipe 2016 Midpoint (H), and ecoinvent - cumulative energy demand methods. The sensitivity and uncertainty analysis were performed to find a potential breakeven point i.e., kgCO2eq per kg formic acid ≤ 1, for the IEC-FA process. However, using renewable energies for the IEC-FA process can make the process carbon footprint negative. The IEC-FA process was also compared with the conventional methyl formate hydrolysis regarding its environmental impacts. A scenario analysis over the main environmental contributors including carbon dioxide, sulfuric acid, and electricity source in terms of their impact on the LCA results is also presented. © 2024, The Authors. Statistical Mechanics of Thermostatically Controlled Multi-Zone Buildings

We study the collective phenomena and constraints associated with the aggregation of individual cooling units from a statistical mechanics perspective. These units are modelled as Thermostatically Controlled Loads (TCLs) and represent zones in a large commercial or residential building. Their energy input is centralized and controlled by a collective unit – the Air Handling Unit (AHU) — delivering cool air to all TCLs, thereby coupling them together. Aiming to identify representative qualitative features of the AHU-to-TCL coupling, we build a realistic but also sufficiently simple model and analyze it in two distinct regimes: the Constant Supply Temperature (CST) and the Constant Power Input (CPI) regimes. In both cases, we center our analysis on the relaxation dynamics of individual TCL temperatures to a statistically steady state. We observe that while the dynamics are relatively fast in the CST regime, resulting in all TCLs evolving around the control setpoint, the CPI regime reveals emergence of a bi-modal probability distribution and two, possibly strongly separated, time scales. We observe that the two modes in the CPI regime are associated with all TCLs being in the same low and high-temperature states, respectively, with occasional (and therefore possibly rare) collective transition between the modes akin in the Kramer’s phenomenon of statistical physics. To the best of our knowledge, this phenomenon was overlooked in the context of the multi-zone energy building engineering, even thought it has direct implications on the operations of centralized cooling systems in buildings. It teaches us that a balance needs to be struck between occupational comfort — related to variations in the individual temperatures — and power output predictability — the main focus of the DR schemes. © 2022, CC BY.

Forming long wavelength moiré superlattices (MSL) at small-angle twist van der Waals (vdW) bilayers has been a key approach to creating moiré flat bands1–8. The small-angle twist, however, leads to strong lattice reconstruction, causing domain walls and moiré disorders, which pose considerable challenges in engineering such platforms6–10. At large twist angles, the rigid lattices render a more robust, but shorter wavelength MSL, making it difficult to engineer flat bands. Here, we depict a novel approach to tailoring robust super-moiré (SM) structures that combines the advantages of both small-twist and large-twist transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) bilayers using only a single twist angle near a commensurate angle. Structurally, we unveil the spontaneous formation of a periodic arrangement of three inequivalent commensurate moiré (CM) stacking, where the angle deviation from the commensurate angle can tune the periodicity. Electronically, we reveal a large set of van Hove singularities (VHSs) that indicate strong band hybridization, leading to flat bands near the valence band maximum. Our study paves the way for a new platform of robust SM bilayers with structural rigidity and controllable wavelength, extending the investigation of the interplay among band topology, quantum geometry, and moiré superconductivity to the large twist angle regime. Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) serves as a crucial half reaction in electrolytic water splitting. Pt is deemed to the most active HER electrocatalyst, but the scarcity and high cost of Pt limit its massive application. Developing efficient, low-cost and well-structured HER catalysts is quite vital for advancing the development of water electrolysis technology. Herein, we present a facile organic-inorganic hybrid method to achieve a novel bimetallic phosphide of MoP-RuPx/NPC catalyst, showing a superior electrocatalytic activity with an overpotential of 24 and 94 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline and acid media, respectively. Moreover, MoP-RuPx/NPC also exhibits an outstanding electrochemical stability with a negligible degradation in HER activity after long-term stability measurements. The eminent electrocatalytic performance of MoP-RuPx/NPC catalyst should be ascribed to the high surface specific area, multiple heterogeneous interfaces, strong electronic synergistic effect between MoP and RuPx, and abundant defects. The organic-inorganic hybrid strategy implemented in this work can be used for synthesizing other bimetallic phosphide catalysts. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Molecular-scale substrate anisotropy and crowding drive long-range nematic order of cell monolayers

The ability of cells to reorganize in response to external stimuli is important in areas ranging from morphogenesis to tissue engineering. Elongated cells can co-align due to steric effects, forming states with local order. We show that molecular-scale substrate anisotropy can direct cell organization, resulting in the emergence of nematic order on tissue scales. To quantitatively examine the disorder-order transition, we developed a high-throughput imaging platform to analyze velocity and orientational correlations for several thousand cells over days. The establishment of global, seemingly long-ranged, order is facilitated by enhanced cell division along the substrate’s nematic axis, and associated extensile stresses that restructure the cells’ actomyosin networks. Our work, which connects to a class of systems known as active dry nematics, provides new understanding of the dynamics of cellular remodeling and organization in weakly interacting cell collectives. This enables data-driven discovery of cell-cell interactions and points to strategies for tissue engineering. © 2022, CC BY.

Nonlinear integrable equations serve as a foundation for nonlinear dynamics, and fractional equations are well known in anomalous diffusion. We connect these two fields by presenting the discovery of a new class of integrable fractional nonlinear evolution equations describing dispersive transport in fractional media. These equations can be constructed from nonlinear integrable equations using a widely generalizable mathematical process utilizing completeness relations, dispersion relations, and inverse scattering transform techniques. As examples, this general method is used to characterize fractional extensions to two physically relevant, pervasive integrable nonlinear equations: the Korteweg–deVries and nonlinear Schrödinger equations. These equations are shown to predict superdispersive transport of nondissipative solitons in fractional media.

Applications of Floquet-Magnus and Fer Expansion Approaches during Cross Polarization Radiation in Solid State NMR

This paper investigates the concept of Cross Polarization (CP) experiment in addition to revisiting the two potential expansion schemes recently developed in the field of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR): namely, the Floquet-Magnus expansion and the Fer expansion. We use the aforementioned expansion schemes for the calculation of effective Hamiltonians and propagators when the spin system undergoes Cross Polarization radiation. CP is the gateway experiment into SSNMR. An in-depth comprehension of the underlying mechanics of spin dynamics during the cross-polarization experiment is pivotal for further experimental developments and optimization of more complex solid-state NMR experiments. The main contribution of this work is a prospect related to spin physics;particularly regarding to generalization of the calculation. This work reports original yet interesting novel ideas and developments that include calculations performed on the CP experiment. In fact, the approach presented could play a major role in the interpretation of several fine NMR experiments in solids, which would in turn provide significant new insights in spin physics. The generality of the work points towards potential applications in problems related in solid-state NMR and theoretical developments of spectroscopy as well as interdisciplinary research areas as long as they include spin dynamics concepts.
