Today's pluralistic and globalized society requires a global perspective in how we think, view ourselves, and relate to others to collaborate successfully with people with different cultural backgrounds. To support the development of a global perspective, universities cultivate international co-operations to enable international mobility for students, faculty, and staff. However, in-person mobility can be inhibited due to various reasons. To support a wider pool of students gaining international experience, modern digital mediated course formats can be used to offer virtual instead of in-person mobility. This contribution evaluates a digital mediated course for mechanical engineering students (Global engineering, GE) held in co-operation between an US and a Portuguese university, where internationally mixed student groups working on design projects in an Hyflex setting. Asides a literature driven discussion about the need for Global Engineers and a detailed description of the GE course, a longitudinal analysis was performed to assess the impact of the GE course on the students' development of a global perspective. The longitudinal analysis showed strong statistical support that the digitally mediated GE course improved the participating students' global perspective, assessed with the Global Perspective Inventory (GPI), tremendously. The observed improvements were in three of the six GPI dimensions comparable to an in-person semester abroad. Limitations of the study and future investigations are discussed. © 2023 IEEE.

Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching(FRAP)and single particle tracking(SPT)techni-ques determine the diffusion coefficient from average diffusive motion of high-concentration molecules and from trajectories of low-concentration single molecules,*** dif-fusion coefficients measured by FRAP and SPT techniques for the same biomolecule on cell membrane have exhibited inconsistent values across laboratories and platforms with larger dif-fusion coefficient determined by FRAP,but the sources of the inconsistency have not been investigated ***,we designed an image-based FRAP-SPT system and made a direct comparison between FRAP and SPT for diffusion coefficient of submicron particles with known theoretical values derived from Stokes-Einstein equation in aqueous *** combined iFRAP-SPT technique allowed us to measure the diffusion coefficient of the same fluorescent particle by utilizing both techniques in a single platform and to scrutinize inherent errors and artifacts of *** results reveal that diffusion coefficient overestimated by FRAP is caused by inaccurate estimation of the bleaching spot size and can be corrected by simple image *** iFRAP-SPT technique can be potentially used for not only cellular membrane dynamics but also for quantitative analysis of the spatiotemporal distribution of the solutes in small scale analytical devices.

Research applications of neural sensing and muscle stimulation have been advanced by the development of bioelectrodes that are biocompatible, flexible and long lasting. The existing metallic made bioelectrodes exhibit extremely high electrochemical resistances that would interfere with the neural-electrode bridge and suffer from mechanical and immunological mismatch. Novel, flexible, implantable bioelectrodes based on MXenes (Ti3C2) and Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite are proposed. Mxenes possess the advantage of having metallic ultra-conductive transition metals consisting of large groups of carbides, nitrides, or carbonitrides, while PDMS has inherent biostability, flexibility and biocompatibility. In the current research, PDMS has been used as the supporting matrix for conductive fillers such as PMMA, PEDOT, and Mxenes. A series of characterization techniques were performed such as Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and mechanical testing. The average results of triplicate samples exhibited samples' bulk impedance of 0.913 kΩ, an impedance of 1.612 MΩ, at 1 kHz frequency and a conductivity of 1.41x10-4S/cm, charge storage capacity of 0.056 mC/cm2 and Young's modulus of 3.81 MPa. © 2023 IEEE.

A joint location-inventory-maintenance model is proposed for a geographically distributed Service Parts Logistics problem. The model uses a reliability-based replacement strategy and is formulated as a quadratic Mixed Integer Linear program which jointly optimizes logistic and preventive part replacement decisions. The proposed solution method employs piecewise linearization to provide a level of tractability and scalability to the method. The newly proposed joint location-inventory-maintenance model is evaluated and benchmarked against traditional local optimum-based replacement approaches. It consistently outperformed the benchmark models, with the efficiency of cost effect improvements determined by the relative prevalence of logistics factors versus asset management costs. © 2025

The fundamental concept of the LAS technique is to understand the fuel concentration by attenuation of both visible and ultraviolet light. The intensity of visible light is only attenuated by the scattering of droplets, while that of ultraviolet light is attenuated by the scattering of droplets and the absorption of vapors. The conventional LAS uses the ND: YAG pulse laser, CCD cameras and one shot for one spray, which takes time and effort. Moreover, temporal variation measurement of a single shot spray is not possible by the conventional LAS. To record the distribution of the whole vapor phase in an injection event and measure the liquid and vapor concentration inside the spray, a high-speed laser absorption scattering (HS-LAS) technique was developed applying continuous diode light source, high-speed video cameras, and image intensifier for UV light, which can provide the temporal variation of a single shot spray. In the experiment, a commercial seven-hole injector with a hole diameter of 0.123 mm allowing high injection pressure up to 100 MPa was used to avoid the potential inconsistencies with single-hole test injector. The diesel surrogate fuel which consists of 97.5 % n-tridecane and 2.5 % of volume-based 1-methylnaphthalene was used. The injection amount 5.0 mg/hole were selected to investigate the structure and mixture formation process of the spray. The findings of the experiments show that this imaging approach is a promising diagnostic technique for concurrently obtaining quantitative information on the quantity of vapor and droplets in a fuel spray. Furthermore, the turbulent/vortex fluid dynamics' temporal development/variation can be investigated. © 2022 by the Japan Society of mechanical Engineers All rights reserved.

Clinical decision-making and radiology will inevitably be transformed by artificial intelligence (AI) in the coming years. The rapid adoption of AI in this domain, and in other everyday applications, has brought an increased awareness of the potential impacts and negative consequences that may occur throughout the sociotechnical systems that these technologies are implemented in. In this paper, we review and apply a previously published taxonomy of the sociotechnical harms of AI to investigate how these harms could manifest during the development and clinical implementation of AI-based medical image analysis. Through an illustrative case study example on computer-aided diagnosis using brain magnetic resonance imaging, we demonstrate how performing impact assessments of sociotechnical harms can assist in operationalizing the medical ethics principle of non-maleficence, thereby guiding the ethical development and implementation of AI technologies in healthcare. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Recently, Japan has been facing various social issues, and to solve these problems, it is necessary to create a society where diverse people can live comfortably. To build such a society, appropriate support tailored to individuals is required, necessitating the analysis of various types of information to understand the people's needs at any given moment. In particular, analyzing non-verbal elements such as posture, facial expressions, and gestures is crucial, as these naturally indicate a person's condition. Therefore, this study focuses on human gestures, one of the non-verbal elements, and proposes a gesture recognition method using Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) and K-Means. We demonstrated that symbolic gesture recognition is possible by recording arm trajectories from skeletal measurements with an RGB-D camera.

Over the past 50 years, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) has played a critical role in the systemic chemotherapy of cancer patients. Bolus intravenous (IV) 5-FU infusion has been used due to the limitation of its extremely short half-life (10–15 min). This study used ultrasound (US) mediating 5-FU-loaded microbubbles (MBs) cavitation as a tool to increase local intratumoral 5-FU levels with a reduced dose of 5-FU (a single IV injection of 2.5 mg/kg instead of a single intraperitoneal injection of 25–200 mg/kg as used in previous studies in mice). The 5-FU-MBs were prepared with a 132 mg/mL albumin solution and a 0.30 mg/mL 5-FU solution. The diameters of the MBs and 5-FU-MBs were 1.24 ± 0.85 and 2.00 ± 0.53 µm (mean ± SEM), respectively, and the maximum loading efficiency of 5-FU on MBs was 19.04 ± 0.25%. In the in vitro study, the cell viabilities of 5-FU and 5-FU-MBs did not differ significantly, but compared with the 5-FU-MBs treatment-alone group, cell toxicity increased to 31% in the 5-FU-MBs + US group (p < 0.001). The biodistribution results indicated that the 5-FU levels of the tumors in small animals were significant higher for the 5-FU-MBs + US treatment than for either the 5-FU-MBs or 5-FU treatment with low 5-FU systemic treatment doses (2.5 mg/kg 5-FU IV). In small-animal treatment, 2.5 mg/kg 5-FU therapeutic IV doses injected into mice caused a more-significant reduction in tumor growth in the 5-FU-MBs + US group (65.9%) than in the control group after 34 days of treatment. © 2022 The Author(s). This paper presents a satellite hyperspectral image processing method that utilizes a maximum abundance classifier to categorize different regions of hyperspectral images into ground truth classes. First, the class names for each endmember and their corresponding columns in the signature matrix are identified, followed by the visualization of their spectral profiles. Abundance maps for the endmembers are then generated using the fully constrained least squares (FCLS) method. Afterward, the maximum abundance classifier is applied, and the resulting classified image is displayed with color-coded pixels. The abundance maps illustrate the spatial distribution of endmembers across the hyperspectral image, where the abundance values of each pixel represent the proportion of each endmember present. By determining the highest abundance value for each pixel and assigning it to the corresponding endmember class, the pixels within the hyperspectral images are classified. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed MAC method effectively handles mixed pixels. In addition, it can effectively deal with the mixed pixel problem in hyperspectral images because it identifies components by calculating the abundance values for each pixel rather than relying solely on single spectral features.
